Videogame preservation and massively multiplayer online role-playing games: A review of... - 0 views

    Videogames are important cultural and economic artifacts. They also present challenges that anticipate the problems inherent in any complex digital interactive system. Not only are they digital and hence very difficult to preserve but they also are software systems that have significant hardware, peripheral, and network dependencies, which are difficult to collect and formally represent. This article reviews the literature related to videogame preservation. In addition to covering the traditional technology-related issues inherent in all digital preservation endeavors, this review also attempts to describe the complexities and relationships between the traditional acts of technology preservation, representation, and collection development. Future work should include the identification of important user groups, an examination of games' context of use, and the development of representational models to describe interaction of players with the game and the interactions between players playing the game.

    I like it -- easy-to-learn core mechanic, solid progression of skills, reasonable and simple "story" frame: this is good edugaming, imo. :) As near as I can tell, this is a separate games-related unit/dept. at UW, separate from the Critical Gaming Project. Can anyone confirm? Regardless, I like to see so much ferment around games coming from one institution.

    I'd say yes, depending on where in the curriculum you're looking to insert it. My CS colleague here does work with his students on Unity, which is FAR more complex than Gamemaker. But I wouldn't recommend trying to get students to make games with GM unless you're going to contribute a lot of your class time to it: demos, how-tos, workshops, and assignments (all multiple). With Kodu, you probably could get away with one longer class, two shorter ones, or an out of class evening workshop, and then just let them play with it. So as always, it's what you're hoping to accomplish with the assignment of the tool that will drive which tool you choose. :) For me, GM is really for people who want to make games they plan to circulate among people outside your class; Kodu could be that or could be to help learn the fundamentals of game design (or other procedural concepts).

    It was originally, but now you can download it for Windows. I /believe/ you can then export your games to a public platform as well, but they may only be available to others with Kodu installed.

  • I have not looked into the particulars of this study nor current issues in neuroplasticity in depth, but this experiment at least draws my attention because of my interest in educational games and simulations (and gaming in general).  I have often wondered, for instance, about violence in video games, and though there is no evidence that violent video games make people more violent, the really interesting question, I think, is whether or not acting out violently in a video game alters the brain differently than acting out violently in real life.  Likewise, what about other behaviors that can be acted out in high fidelity through a game from stealing in Grand Theft Auto to cyber spouses in World of Warcraft.  Do these activities affect one's neural mapping?Obviously, there are other, more curriculum-oriented implications of this study that are probably more pertinent to my field, but I think that generally we tend to view digital experiences in a different way than real life experiences, and if it's all the same to our brains, then it seems like that is something we should be conscious of when designing and consuming digital products.

It seems at least one advisor to the game is a proponent of "intelligent design", but I agree it makes sense for the game to focus on cell mechanics. Just because you control the cell, doesn't mean the game is making an argument for an omnipotent creator of all living things.   • Within twenty-four hours of the sensationalistic news breaking, however, a group of Battlefield 2 fans was crowing about the idiocy of reporters. The game play footage wasn’t from a high-tech modification of the software by Islamic extremists; it had been posted on a Planet Battlefield forum the previous December of 2005 by a game fan who had cut together regular game play with a Bush remix and a parody snippet of the soundtrack from the 2004 hit comedy film Team America. The voice describing the Black Hawk helicopters was the voice of Trey Parker of South Park cartoon fame, and – much to Parker’s amusement – even the mention of “goats screaming” did not clue spectators in to the fact of a comic source.

And so they only need a few Internet sites in order to distribute and disseminate the message.”
  • Bogost may be right that Congress received terrible counsel on that day, but a close reading of the transcript reveals that elected officials were much more than passive listeners: in fact they were lively participants in a cultural conversation about regulating digital media. After looking at the actual language of these exchanges, it seems that the persuasiveness of the misinformation from the Pentagon and SAIC had as much to do with lawmakers’ preconceived anxieties about practices of computer-mediated communication close to home as it did with the contradictory stereotypes that were presented to them about Internet practices abroad. In other words, lawmakers found themselves looking into a fun house mirror that distorted what should have been familiar artefacts of American popular culture because it was precisely what they wanted to see.

    Via James Schirmer on Buzz. As I commented there:  This is quite sensible. Since I do want to dismantle capitalism, I don't agree with that bit. More subtly, I am concerned about the entrenchment of simplistic binary thinking in western, particularly US, culture, so "Game designers often like to see an epic battle between good and evil - even where there isn't one - but that's part of the charm" - for me that's a significant drawback. To the extent that a game includes an argument about how the world is or how the world should be, then reinforcing oversimplification (rather than the simplification necessary in any model of the/a world, be it a book, movie, academic article or game) is problematic. I like my myths/theories/stories multifaceted.

    Bogost seems to be getting more and more irritated by the gamification pseudo-movement. His response to McGonigal's book was contrary but professional. The exploitationware piece was critical and pointed, but I thought still civil. This is...angry. And that really comes through in his comment to the gamify.com guy's post. I'm mostly in agreement on the substance of his objections to much of gamification. But I wonder why this movement toward such vehemence? Do you suppose he's now fielding more annoying offers to help design game-like systems? Is Cow Clicker kindof backfiring, leading people to him as a designer instead of away from him? I don't know. But he sure is pissed, that's clear.

    I have no inside knowledge. But I suspect his irritation increases in proportion to the hype. The tone here is caustic, but the content is on the money. If you agree with him, and if you love games and their potential, you can understand the rage, I think.

    I don't know -- rage, really? Isn't the "games vs. gamification" tack ultimately more of a both/and thing than a conflict? I'm not sure why having gamification exist necessarily entails an undermining of what games are. I suppose there's the question of educating non-gamers on the great potential of actual games, and perhaps policing a boundary between the two concepts. But just as I don't really want the local police to become enraged when I cross a line, I find this kind of response (and again, I've seen Bogost do it far better and with greater restraint elsewhere) off-putting to say the least. One comment on his post referred to Bogost's "war" against gamification; I'm just not sure that's the most productive approach to addressing its rise.

    Well it sounds like from the review that this is pretty uninspired. But it does raise an interesting design question, namely "what kind of game mechanics would prompt calls of 'great game' by regular Bible readers/users?" That is, how could designers approach this problem in a way that would invite players to experience the stories in the Bible interactively? Or maybe that's over-simplifying a complex cultural issue, and there really isn't a way to do this without having it come across as trite because "the Bible" is too multivalent in contemporary society.

    Perhaps thinner and/or lighter projects would work better. Thinner: spread the work even further across a class. Individual projects ->groups, groups ->whole class. Lighter: even easier to use tools. Inform is pretty easy, though...

    Wow. Is this the first full-size (major) program at an LAC in game studies? Computer Science and I have started some very early conversations here, but I don't think we'd do anything more than a minor.

    Cool. I especially like the Design Challenge as a requirement for acceptance into the program. I wonder if they had issues when they started with people declaring the major without sufficient commitment? At ND when I was an undergrad, the Program of Liberal Studies, my major, required a short essay as part of an application to be a major. The Chair later admitted they don't really even evaluate them, but they found just having such a requirement was a deterrent to those on campus who (erroneously) saw the degree as light and fluffy. I'm not sure how I feel about that as the sole motivation for the requirement, but I'd definitely like to see what students who applied to Champlain's program submitted. :)

    I find the comment that "It will be difficult to market a First Person Shooter where you don't shoot" very odd. How many copies of Portal were sold? Prior to that, the Thief series sold well and won tons of awards. It's not even the first game to feature a camera as the primary mechanic- I can't remember the name but there was one I played years ago where that was the primary role. Step outside the box a bit guys.

    Thief is a great example of an FPS where the S isn't about shooting people. First-person sneaker, some people called it. One of my personal favorite games of all time. I agree with edremy that there is no marketing problem here at all. Quite the reverse - war correspondent is a glamorous kind of profession (from the outside) and likely to attract not only the usual FPS fanbase but also appeal more broadly.

    I wonder about attracting the usual FPS fanbase, but I do take your point that there's no a priori feature of the gaming market that would make this a hard sell. Now politics, however, if they're foregrounded here, could be bad for the bottom line, as, of course, could clunky gameplay. If the levels require a significant amount of challenge and variety to complete, this could be quite popular. Did anyone see any kind of release date and cost?
