Why the Desktop Will Never Die - 0 views

  •
Most would think that, what with all the new laptops and computers coming out these days being so thin and portable, the desktop era would be finished, right? Wrong. The desktop is part of Internet Culture, that is to say, it's been around for as long as the Internet has, and it will stay. Just because the Internet will eventually make newspapers, TV, and radio obsolete, the desktop will never disappear, because it is based on the same process as other computers. It provides everything it always had (QWERTY keyboard, everything else that made it so huge in the first place). Therefore, the day the desktop dies will be the same as that when the Internet does.

ChromeOS Gets a Desktop, a Taskbar, and a Whole New Look - 0 views

  •
This article is all about ChromeOS. ChromeOS has always been just a Chrome browser and very little else. With the latest development build, however, Chromebook owners can try out a window manager, a taskbar, and even desktop space. At the moment, only owners of Acer or Samsung Chromebooks can try out the latest Dev Channel build with "Aura," the new desktop scheme.

Chrome Offers Tabs to Go With New Tab-Syncing Features | Webmonkey | Wired.com - 0 views

  •
This new tab syncing feature that google provides, allows the user coordinate the tabs between their mobile device and home laptop/desktop. This relates to Portable Computing because you are able to access tabs on your home computer through a mobile device while outside. This could also connect to the Privacy and Security tag because if someone has access your devices they are able to change your info or documents. This is extremely helpful during your day to day lifestyle since a large portion of the population uses mobile devices. The positive aspect would be that you're able to  continue work. The negative aspect could be that an outside source could access your info. With an Android phone with the new Chrome beta installed, you have the power of  being able to access any open tab any on your desktop from any location.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview now available to download - 0 views

  •
Microsoft has finally released the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, the successor to the Developer Preview they released a few months ago. In this version, Xbox Live support has been added, along with the Windows Store opening for business, which lets users download new Metro apps... but not Desktop apps. Also, the Start Button has been moved to this slide-out panel to the right of the screen. I think Microsoft is taking a huge misstep with Windows 8 in terms of it's UI. They should either have all desktop or all Metro UI. Having used Windows 8, switching between the two is just weird because of how incredibly different both interfaces are. And don't even get me started with the freakin' ARM version not letting you sideload apps! And- and- and-... I'll stop complaining now.

A Decade On, Windows XP Is Still the World's Most-Used Desktop OS - 0 views

  •
Live long and prosper, Windows XP. After 10 years, yes, 10 YEARS, Windows XP is still the world's most-used desktop OS. Hindered by the 9/11 attacks, the October 25, 2011 release date did not produce the results Windows was looking for. Once it got big, though, it surpassed all others for longevity, and continues on today.

How to Fix Windows 8's Biggest Annoyances (and Make It More Like Windows 7) - 0 views

  •
The new OS; Windows 8, is bringing on a lot of excitement, but many people are not too happy with the changes made, myself included. Many people miss the desktop screen, and dislike the new start screen. Others don't like the tiled look and are more used to that of windows 7. There are many other problems and this article describes how to fix all of them. First of all, There is the desktop screen problem. Many of us used to place all our most used programs on our desktop screen so that when you log on, you will have quick access to all you needs, but now all of that is gone and replaced by the start screen. Fortunately, you can bring them back with Start8 (which is easier to use but costs $5) or Classic Shell (which is harder to use but is more customizable and is free). The cool thing about Classic Shell is that it can fix many other things, such as turning your windows explorer from a ribon-ified mess into a usable file browser. you can also fix this problem with Xplorer2. Another problem is that you cant view your videos without buying an attachment to windows media player, but you can fix this with free programs such as VLC There are many other peeves i n widnows 8 that this article helps solve. In conclusion, I feel that knowing that these problems can be fixed will lean alot more people towards windows 8

  •
this article is about a company announced its AudiOffice product at the 2012 Mobile World Congress this week. It's a dock equipped with speakers for Apple's iPhone, iPod and iPad. It plays music, makes calls and allows users to video chat with others.Since apps such as Skype and FaceTime are often used for business communication to help with web connectivity and control costs, AudiOffice allows users to use these programs without having to go through your computer.Don't have an iOS device? You can still connect a mobile phone to the system via its internal Bluetooth radio.

How Do Laptops Affect the Environment? | National Geographic - 0 views

  •
The main idea of this article is the possible effects on the environment that laptops have over desktops. This article discusses the possible of conserving natural resources, using energy efficiently, and how laptops contribute to landfill toxins. Connection: The main problem that laptops have is the resources that laptops are made of. For example, laptops are usually made of metals such as mercury, lead, chromium and other various metals that if not recycled could contaminate the land and resources around the landfill. For example if such metals end up in the landfill, they could contaminate ground water, land water, and the soil around the landfill. This wouldn't allow us to drink the water as well as growing crops or using the soil around the landfill. This highlights how important it is for us to create laptops that use less harmful metals and the importance of recycling laptops.  In my opinion, considering some of the harmful effects that laptops have they also have many positive ones. For example, now that people can use things such as power point presentations, sending emails, we don't need to use as much paper as we used to which saves paper and preserves trees. Due to computers, communication has also become much easier. People can now order things off the internet rather than drive far away to a specialty shop, their item is delivered by a delivery person who has many things to deliver. This is far more efficient than each person driving to a shop to buy something.  In conclusion, computers do have some negative effects on the environment but they also do have some positive effects and made our life much easier. The World's Smallest Arm Chip Is Going To Be Inside You - 0 views

  •
This article is about Freescale launching the world's smallest arm chip. It is made of silicon and is only 2 x 2 x 0.5mm. It can hold 48 HMz ARMM Cortex-M0+ processor, 32KB flash memory, and 4KB of RAM. This, however, is not designed to run desktop software, but is instead intended to be used for products that can be swallowed. I think this is an improvement on "Portable Computing", as this technology can be used in the medical field. This also follows the trend of minimization, as we can now see the potential and advantages of having smaller chips, for example, inserting them into pills that can be swallowed. Freescale is pricing this product at 75 cents apiece, if purchased in 100 000 unit loads. However, I am certain that the cost will go up dramatically if launched successfully, causing the a shift in the electronic market and economy.

  •
I like this article because it shows how our cultures and technology is evolving. It shows how they made new tv's that can act as computers. On this new tv it has apps. You can access the internet on it. You can access social networks such as facebook, and you can check friends profiles, update your profile and many more. You can also watch videos on youtube on the youtube app that will be out in a few days. It will be easier than going to a desktop or a laptop.

Switched On: Think form factors, not PCs -- Engadget - 0 views

  •
This article talks about how our technology has become more advanced over the last 30 years. Before computers, people used typewriters to type, but then PC's were made and it made life easier for everyone. Many people say that we are now in the post-PC era because we are developing things like the iPad or the Amazon Kindle Fire where you don't need a keyboard or huge desktop to surf the net or send out an email. But some say there is no "post- PC" era because PC's were just the beginning of a much bigger computing era. Either way, PC's were the first of something that would and already has drastically changed our lives.

Access Your Computer From Afar This Weekend - 0 views

  •
This is something everyone can use. You could use this to turn off your computer when you're on the go, access files and much more. This could come in handy for students. If they were to forget to email a file from their computer to their laptop they could access and print the files from their desktop. You would also be able to stream media to your devices from your phone. I know I would be using this frequently.

Windows 8 vs. iPad: feature by feature | The Verge - 0 views

  •
Microsoft's Window 8 Consumer Preview now gives everyone a chance to experience the company's most biggest change in user interference since Windows 95. It is now a mouse-centric desktop to a touch-friendly, high visual Metro style UI. There are also many more great changes. Window's challenge is the iPad. They share a few similarities. Many people don't like iPad because it doesn't have flash or LTE. Though others like sir love the iPad and will forever.

How to: bring back the Windows 8 Start menu and Start button orb - 0 views

  •
Wow, that was fast! Someone got to making a Windows 8 app that brings back the functions of the start menu. This would actually make me much more likely to upgrade to the OS, because the main problem I have with it is that the start menu is gone and instead replaced with a metro interface that does not transition well from the desktop. It's nice that there are people out there that actually take the time to tweak Windows to make it perform the way people prefer. Now if only Apple allowed for that kind of tweaking officially on OS X and iOS...

Bret Taylor: "A Few Years From Now, Most Every Single Person At Facebook Is Going To Be... - 0 views

  •
This article talks about how Facebook is wanting to improve their mobile aps and their HTML5. The article says how almost half of Facebook's users are on actively on mobile devices, and I am one of them. I barely have time to go on the computer anymore so I'm always on the Facebook app on my blackberry, so I think its great that they're trying to improve their aps and make it so that Facebook will be available on any kind of phone. It is so much more convenient to be able to use Facebook on your mobile device than on an actual desktop. Bret Taylor even predicts that a few years from now, almost every person at Facebook is going to be working on mobile, and I could see why he would say that.

Google Wants to Use Chrome to Redefine Software - 0 views

  •
Google has added Web apps on to the desktop and the new page has bigger and friendly icons. it also added new technologies in Chrome that securely execute low-level code in the browser. Some of the new apps are gmail, Google Reader, Google News, and of course Angry Birds. Sounds good and even better then how it was before.

Hackers wanted $50,000 to keep Symantec source code private - 1 views

  •
...And this is why no one should use Norton. Ever. Well that's not the only reason, it's slow, it makes you pay expensive subscription fees and it tends to put pop-ups on your desktop, but this is a good reason not to use it too.
