Common Question I: Effective Instructional Strategies Please discuss three most effective instructional strategies integrated in your project. Please be sure to justify why they are effective instructional strategies. Remember instructional strategies are not your contents or "technologies," such as wiki, discussion board etc. It is the integrated soft technologies.
    • Kristin Robertson

The students are using a hand-on approach to retrieving and creating information. They will be responsible for their own learning in this way. They will be creating many aspects to their final projects, report, diorama, presentation, and posted picture. By them taking a hands on approach they will be more invested and engaged in their learning. The students can also choose to be working cooperatively or independently. The choice gives students the opportunity to determine the best learning for themselves. They are also determining which style of learner they are which will benifit them in all other learning endevours. The students will also be working on time management, organization, and long term projects. They will be developing these skills to enhance their future and curent education.

Common Question II: Instructional Technology Please discuss the instructional technologies that you integrate into your lesson plan exclude your web sites/pages because they are the basic technology. Instructional technology is referred to hard technology in this question, such as discussion board, chat, wiki, blog etc.
    • Kristin Robertson

The instructional technologies that are in this lesson are posting a digital picture to the web page, having a discussion or commenting in the discussion area, and (I know it is not an instructional technology, but it is a very important skill to learn) navigating the websites to complete a task. Uploading the picture to the web page is going to be the most challenging technology part of the lesson. The students can, and I predict will, be using the discussion section to chat with each other.

Common Question III: Pitfalls Do you think your web-based lesson plan is effective and successful? Can you foresee any pitfalls in project? Please describe them.
    • Kristin Robertson

I am excited about this lessom plan. I think the students will love to be able to go online to get the information and all of the resources they will need to complete the project. They will benifit from navigating through the site and the individual responsibility they must use to complete the project. As far as pitfalls, the most difficult task for the students which will require help and assistance will be posting their picture of the diorama to the website. I think they will be able to do everything else, and I am hoping they surprise me with their abilities and I will be able to add even more things into the nest web-based lesson plan.

Hi Kristin, You nailed this final project! I am overly impressed and thank you for sharing; you have made me a better web-designer because of your attention to detail! Content: *no info downloaded for this content area on the rubric* mjm Aim/Purpose: Without looking further, I feel that I know what I will be learning about, based on the entry page. This is very well laid out (Expert) Lesson Plan/Teacher's Guide/ Instructional Plan: (Mastery) there is a link to the lesson plan that displays properly. Student Activity Page: You made a very clear concise page that is informative and useful to the students. I think that it was a great idea to include this as your Home page. (Expert) Parent Page: "Oh my gosh" were the words that I spoke out loud when I saw this page. You did a phenomenal job of creating ideas for parents to engage their students. I think that you should share this model with the rest of our class and you deserve a DOUBLE (Expert) rating. Web Design: *no info downloaded for this content area on the rubric* mjm Layout: Simple, easy to use and wonderful to look at (Expert) Navigation: (Expert) Yours was the first project that included links back to the HOME page. I was so impressed that I immediately added a similar function to my project. Thank YOU! Graphics: I really just want to stop reviewing your presentation because I have not found any faults so far :) My only suggestion here would be to include some graphics on your Home page, or any page that is meant for Students, this will help the visual learners. (Mastery) Accessibility: Only the photos on the Directions page did not have ALT tags, and I know from my own experiences that students love to click on photos, regardless of the words on a page. So maybe it is a good idea to keep the graphics off of the Student pages that have Directions. (Mastery) Fonts: Everything is in order here (Expert) Background:Simple is good or in this case it equals... (Expert) Color Choice

Hi Tracy, Content: *no info downloaded for this content area on the rubric* mjm Aim/Purpose: I loved this introduction because it was creative and enticing! I think that it lacks the purpose of the task...but I want to overlook that because of the great graphics and cleverness (Expert) Lesson Plan/Teacher's Guide/ Instructional Plan: (Mastery) there is a link to the lesson plan that displays properly. I think that if would be easier to have a link for this under the Home page, (here is another but) I like how you are forced to enter through the Parent page and then the Student page. One way to get around this is too insert internal links into the Welcome Parents page. Student Activity Page: (Expert) This page is inviting and visually appealing which draws the student into the activity. Parent Page: (Mastery) I think that this is a great support page for parents except that it does not mention creative ways for the parents to be involved; it is very sterile. Your Home page was so imaginative that I am sure you can offer a creative suggestion to the parents. Web Design: *no info downloaded for this content area on the rubric* mjm Layout: (Expert) Finally, I can tell you how professionally well organized your site is, and that it is very consistent and user friendly. The overall concept for the site is anything but sterile :) Navigation: I do not get lost in your site, it is simple and easy to use (Expert) Graphics: (Expert) The graphics were very consistent and I was impressed with the simplistic design of each page, I think that your great use of graphics was the key. Accessibility: You used the ALT tags very effectively by thoroughly describing each graphic, great job. (Expert) Fonts: Another great job through simplistic design (Expert) Background: Same comment as above (Expert) Oh, please apply to have the advertisements removed from your website, it is free for educators and takes 1 minute of your time. Misty, I really enjoyed the lesson on weather. I was just a little confused about the KidPix part of the lesson since I couldn't find it in the student activities pages. I can believe this would be a great lesson for the students and the Parent activities were great. Great job!! Virginia Aim/Purpose -- The entry page tells what the Aim/Purpose of the lesson is to the student - Mastery Lesson Plan - Link to the lesson plan is included and it works -- Mastery Student Activity Page -- The student activity pages describe learning activities in age appropriate language. The rubric is for a lesson on KidPix, but I didn't see anything in the student activities for KidPix. Copies of grading rubrics are available. - Mastery. Parent Page -- Parent page includes creative ideas for engaging students at home. Really creative ideas. I thought the idea of reading the book and making a cake was great, also making the cloud in a jar was cool. - Expert Layout -- The wiki page is very nicely laid out. The graphics on the first page are an interesting start. I especially like the layout on the Parent page. The layout on the student activity page looks shifted to the right, but otherwise all the pages were well done. -- Expert Navigation -- All links are clearly marked and go where you expect to go. All of the links worked -- Expert Graphics -- The graphics used related to the topic and enhanced the instruction. --Expert Accessibility -- Images have ALT tags. -- Expert Fonts - The use of fonts is consistent and easy to read. The point size varies from heading to text and bold and underline is used appropriately. -- Expert Background -- The background is exceptionally attractive and consistent across the pages. It adds to the theme and purpose of the lesson. - Expert. Color Choices -- Colors of background, fonts, unvisited and visited links were all pleasing. They did not detract from the content and were consistent across the website. - Expert. Spelling & Grammar -

Three most effective instructional strategies integrated in my project are group discussions between those who peer reviewed each others work, being able to have a electronic copy of the lesson plan virtually any where they are (where are computer is present), and the use of invesigation when examining different articles.

My students were to use wiki to post and discuss each others work. The focus was for the students to post their papers and have others in the class peer review. The use of the wiki is widely accessible for many students to access every students paper in the class. This in the end provides opportunities for students to have numerous peers evaluate their work.

I do believe this can be effective in the classroom, although I do think after I teach it I will have to reflect on it to master the art of developing this lesson. Some pitfalls for me as of now is the assesibility of the web site. It is still unclear to me how to put ALT tags on my web site for other to view it. Other than that, I feel I will have to help my students through wiki. Most students will not understand until they completely "get" the whole process.

Indirect Study (ID) is very effective in the use of this project. The student can learn and review at their own pace and the instructor takes a back seat becoming a facilitator, supporter, and resource person. The student takes on the responsibility for their learning experience, and sets their own pace, and depth of study. This type of learning process is key when the learners are in their clinical settings. Independent Study (IS) is another effective strategy used in this application. Students are asked to review the content at home. Learners are purposefully provided opportunity to foster the development of individual student initiative, self-reliance, and self-improvement. In nursing clinical(s) such developments are required to become functional as a nurse. Direct Instruction also applies in the context of this project, as the selected websites, provide step by step instructions of where to listen and what is being heard by the learner. The repetitive methodology of this allows the learner to have modeled what they need to achieve. Most of the physical side of nursing is repetition until appropriate skill is achieved, be the techniques of starting an Intravenous site, or diagnosis of normal verus adventitious sounds.

I do not have a true discussion board assembled for this project. There is a Wiki based response area suggested for each page all connecting main pages, (not links), for comments and questions about the page. There is direction on the learning activities page for participants to dialogue on learning experiences and concepts. I added a Diigo book-marking page under the same name as the web site. As an overkill in the book-marking I also placed a link to delicious. At current retrospect I have probably set up to many locations to blog or chat.

To a point of showing students stethoscope placement, and giving a very basic auditory demonstration of what some anatomical sounds are, I think the lesson is okay. Certainly having so many places for students to write comments to would make tracking questions difficult. Futuristically I would use a better program to generate a web page, that better directs and limits wiki discussions, or blogs. With development of skill in using a web creation program I could greatly improve my project. I think a curriculum construction course would also be greatly helpful in understanding how to put it all together for proper presentation to all.
    • john conway

Another thought that just came to me it that the required textbook pages need to be a PDF and available on line. In the context here, I do not have the ability to create PDF, so I did not pursue it. I also believe I would have needed to obtain some permission of it use, so that also detered me from a possibly greatly improving piece to my project.
    • Chih-Hsiung Tu

It is correct to have many places to have sutdetns to comment is difficult for instructors to track. Consider to have some management tools, such iGoogle to manage all tools we use. Using Web 2.0 tools and not use management tools could be difficult for learning and teaching.

I had not thought of it, adding gadgets would make some features really "cool" as the saying goes. I liked some of the youtube features others have, i am not sure what exists for nursing that would be appropraite. I need to look into it!

John, Overall I like the lesson. The content is well out of my range of knowledge but I particularly like how the lesson is very focused on one main objective and engages learners in experimentation and discussion which directly links to their readings and in-class work. Well done. * Aim/Purpose - Expert : very clear and focused purpose to the lesson. * Lesson Plan/Teacher's Guide/ Instructional Plan : Page contains appropriate content and technology standards. Somewhat brief explanation of lesson. Couldn't find a link to download a printable version. * Student Activity Page: Activities arranged in a logical order and included the required links (which worked) to the activity. Q and A discussion forum established to provide support to learners. * Parent Page : No parent page included and as the lesson is designed for adults it would have been inappropriate to include a parent page. * Web Design - Chose basic design within the Wetpaint Wiki templates. * Layout - layout is simple and non-distracting - keeps learners focused on the content. * Navigation - easy navigation with appropriate pages available on the left and a link on each page back to the main page. * Graphics - are appropriate and have alt tags, however, could not find references to the graphics. * Accessibility - no apparent issues with accessibility. * Fonts - are consistent throughout with larger font sizes and bold used to designate headers. * Background - the dark green background made some of the links disappear on the page. * Color Choices - some of the links appeared as light green which was a great choice for the dark green background but most of them appeared as the standard blue and were difficult to read. * Spelling and Grammar - no apparent spelling or grammar mistakes * Copyright - at the top of each page author provides information on the intent of the lesson for the Phoenix College Nursing. * Contact Informat

John, this topic is a hard one for many (like myself) but I think you underestimate how well your site is put together. I was pulled in to want to know more and I could feel the personalization, without knowing you well. Fine Job! Expert * Aim/Purpose The who, what, where, and why are answered on the Home Page - Mastery * Lesson Plan/Teacher's Guide/ Instructional Plan is very thorough. May want subtitles left aligned - Expert * Student Activity Page All links work - very understandable * Parent Page None; however a neat twist on this might be on taking care of/assisting needs of parents of the students. (elderly) - just a creative thought. Expert * Web Design - being a wiki, how did you design with your own color choice, no template... Expert * Layout -consistant throughout Expert * Navigation Consistant link back to Home at the bottom of all pages. Organized and flows. Expert * Graphics I love the humor. With such a technical subject, and one that is hard to be interested in if you're not, your choice of images/cartoons pulls me in to read more. (citations?) Novice * Accessibility ALT tag that describes the image and if it links anywhere - Expert * Fonts Clean and easy to read. Consistant throughout web site. Group collaboration. Is utilized throughout lesson, from researching sites, comparing notes, application and designing a book for presentation. Production Process - the planning of all learning is taught in the Process Writing Exercise. Pre-production (the beginning) involves the brainstorming. Production (the focus) Drafting and developing. Post-production (feedback) review and adjustment. Expectations: Tried to make sure that there were no questions as to what is expected, and that the lesson was easy to follow.

I have used the wiki thread as a response area to immediately involve the student's use of wiki interaction. I also incorporated NiceNet as another conference area exposing a useful site, set up with the lesson plan as well. Using other websites to teach is purposefully fun, and is a means for collaboration. Actually building a book on-line teaches by example the tools available. The home page is meant to grab the visitors attention with something to do...the use of color for immediate interest and watch a video introduction to graphic design. The script is available for diversity; I would like to further develop a better universal design in my web site. I actually filmed and edited the video, so integrating this technology is what I feel teaching web-based is all about. Application. (and learning how to put the video on the website) :)

I feel my web-based lesson plan is effective and will be successful. The challenges that may hinder the application is the possibility of having too much to do for one lesson. I started the plan with too much content and cut back on what I wanted to cover. Having too much can be overwhelming, not only for the students, but for myself as well. I am sure that I will be able to address this when I put this into action. Is a struggle for me to access the time necessary to be productive and efficient, without over-doing. (but I have sooo much I want to say)

Michelle, Overall I like the lesson. The lesson is engaging and focused and uses external sites to support the lesson appropriately. You have also provided adequate scaffolding and step by step instructions on how to implement and carry out the lesson. Well done. * Aim/Purpose - Expert : Entry page provides informative video on the lesson topic. Good use of multi-colored fonts to draw reader's attention. * Lesson Plan/Teacher's Guide/ Instructional Plan : Expert: Lesson plan for teachers is well presented with the content and technology standards and correspond to the objectives and activities. * Student Activity Page: Expert: Lesson is designed for 10-12th graders - activities are appropriate for this age group. Appropriate use of white space to avoid "over-crowding" of information. Information is organized and easy to read. * Navigation - Expert: All the links are labeled and open to the appropriate site. Important links are found in multiple places (i.e. within the lesson and on the resource page) * Graphics - Mastery: Somewhat limited use of graphics but those that are included are directly related to lesson. * Accessibility - Mastery: ALT tags are not apparent. * Fonts - Expert: Fonts are consistent throughout. Front page utilized colored fonts well. * Background - Expert: White background is simple and consistent and renders the pages easy to view. * Color Choices - Expert: Basic white background with mostly black font renders the site readable and clear. Visited links appear as a different color.

Well in review I can certainly see I have more than just much to learn about development of lesson plans. Your though ness in thought and design are staggering to me. I was struggling with the technology, and had no concept of what lesson plans looked like. This is another very impressive and humbling to lesson plan. Excellent work! The only problem noted was a link issue with Oregon Pioneers By Stefanie Flora, my computer could not open it, and I been having a lot of problems of that nature.

I am using andragogy (which is different than pedagogy) to keep this very directed. Under the theory of andragogy (teaching adults), you want to 1. make it relevant. 2. make it direct. 3. make it hands on. My course is set up so that the instructors can work at their own pace, they have a basic explaination of what the technology/program is, how it is relevant to their teaching, and then they have to work through how to use it (with basic prompting). It is set up to be a problem centered real world issue (how to use these tools in their own classrooms) which motivates them to complete the assignments. This is not some "make believe problem" but a real world actual problem which directly involves them.

I have run this with my kids school here in the UAE with several of the teachers. They loved how it is laid out and how easy it is to use the wiki (once they understand it). The only real pitfall I can see with it is that by using wiki's, individuals with sight impairment/vision problems may not have universal accessability. The other issue is that RAKESS (the school) currently blocks Youtube videos (it is possible for them to unblock certain rooms, but it is a pain), and that teachertube is NOT able to be embedded into wetpaint wiki's.

You website, was enjoyable as you are teaching your students the use of some web 2.0 tools, delicious bookmarking and wetpaint. I loved how you incorporated videos to help expalin how to use the web 2.0 toll websites, clever idea. I know sometimes I can read how to do something and be able to get, but a video is always helpful. Then what better way to but a students knowledge to test, then have them use the tools and create things. Great Lesson!

Contact Information-Novice- No authorship on each page except that is provided by the wiki.

Hi Phil. I noticed on the student evaluation rubric there were not places for N/A. for example in the parents page, I don't teach children, so I don't have a parents page. I think a N/A option there would be good. as for accessiblity... I don' t know that it is novice... I don't think wiki's support alt tags. would that be a better as an N/A also? i did think of creating a whole CSS page for people with screen readers, and having everyone go there first and get the choice of wiki or universal accessability, but it seemed like a lot of work to go through, and then the universal accessability would not be interactive as the wiki's. should I do that? what do you think?
  •
Wiki made a good note on: "as for accessiblity... I don' t know that it is novice... I don't think wiki's support alt tags. would that be a better as an N/A also?" Anyone like to address it?
  •
Will I couldn't agree with you more. The point of this activity was to produce a web-based learning activity which you did very effectively. I think the rubric hamstrings reviewers in to looking for things that may not be as important as the content and organization. So in an effort to try to go along with the rubric, some items get marked low. If I had free reign to assess you work, I'd say it was an excellent plan that hit what students need, it was clear, had great teaching resources and I may come back and do the lesson myself. My only comment would be to add in the introduction what your teaching level is so reviewers have some perspective as to who the "customer" is.

Self Evaluation * Aim/Purpose - Expert- The entry page states a quick overview and goals of the assignment. * Lesson Plan/Teacher's Guide/ Instructional Plan - Mastery- I realize I should have used the Taskstream Lesson plan builder to make it much more indepth. * Student Activity Page - Expert- This contains multi channel forms of information, videos, links and assignments. * Parent Page - N/A. I don't teach children, but rather adults. As such I don't have a parents page. I do think I should have included a "stakeholders" page for the student, teachers and administrators, but I would have it tied with the lesson plan. * Layout - Expert- I am using wetpaint wiki, and it makes the layout extremely simple and straight forward. * Navigation - Expert- Each page has its own link on the menu page, and all are accessable from any page in the site. * Graphics - Expert- There are only 2 pictures which are for Delicious and wetpaint, but it also includes several sets of videos which help explain the material.. * Accessibility - N/A. This is a wetpaint wiki and as such it does not support accessbility. The issue I have is that part of this unit is about how to use wiki's and delicious... if you make universial accessible css pages, they are NOT interactive like a wiki. * Fonts- Expert- Fonts are consistent and simple. * Background- Expert- Consistent and simple. * Color Choices- Expert- Colors are consistent and simple on all pages. * Spelling and Grammar- Expert- There are no errors. * Copyright- Mastery- All borrowed material is cited, but I don't know if citations are done correctly. I should have a resources page with the citations for the videos. * Contact Information- mastery- Contact information is provided by Wiki on each page but my contact information as the author are not listed, and my creative commons license is not listed.

Rachell I have completed a review of your lesson plan wiki. I love the idea of having a class site that assignments are posted, I use a Google Doc website, but only attach my assignments. The lesson looks clear, I'm just worried that as you ask the student to open a link, they now cannot read the directions. My high school kids get lost when I do that. Wikis make putting lessons online easy and clear and your links and formatting were basic but very effective. I struggled on mine using Dreamweaver. Over all, nice job. I will post your rubric, as soon as I figure it out.

Overall nice lesson plan web site. It is basic, clear and easy to follow, especially for 2nd graders. Great parent resources, clear instructions and excellent navigation. Aim-Mastery-Entry page is a general page for the class and not as clear about the lesson. Lesson Plan-Mastery-I found it! Student Activity page-Mastery-If the student goes to the web page requested, http://illuminations.nctm.org/activities.aspx?grade=2 how are they going to read the rest of the instructions? Parewnt Page-Expert-Nice parent page with links to what is going on and an explanation of the lesson. Parents need that, especially with math lessons. Good work here!! Layout-Mastery- Layout is basic, clear with no frills. Very few graphics Navigation-Expert-Navigation is clear and easy and all the links work. I love wikis for this reason. Graphics-Mastery- Very few graphics, no citations needed Accessibility-Novice-No alt tags that I can see. Fonts-Expert-Fonts are consistent and do not distract. Background-Mastery-Background is simple and does not detract. Color Choices-Mastery-Very few colors, but does not distract. Spelling and Grammar-Expert-No errors I can see. Copyright-Expert-Very little content needed citing. Contact Info-Novice-No authorship on each page except that is provided by the wiki.

Aim- mastery. A straight forward opening. Lesson Plan-Mastery I was able to find it. Student Activity page- expert. The student page was very good. My only issue is that it requires students to go to a different webpage and then follow directions still on the wiki page. Maybe it should say "open this webpage in a new tab and then follow these directions." Parent Page- mastery. there is a parents page. But why is it under the student pages? shouldn't it be its own page? Also there is no section for parent feedback. (this is a wiki and it does allow for multiple people editing it. could there be a section at the bottom for questions from parents? just a thought) Layout- mastery. A wiki keeps it simple. You can petition the wetpaint wiki folks to remove the ads. I posted how to do it in blackboard on our unit 7 stuff. Navigation- mastery. I would like to give it expert, but it is not laid out as easy to navigate. The teachers page is found under the parents page, and it isn not listed on the menu on the left hand side of the screen. So the pages are there, but they are inside of each other, and not accessible from the menu on the left. Graphics mastery. very few graphics, and the ones that are used are repeated from one page to the next. Now they are not really needed. No video's embedded to help further instruction. Accessibility-. N/A. Wiki's are not univerally accessible. I do not believe in punishing a person for something that is NOT part of the program. Fonts- expert. the fonts are well done and the sizes are good. no issues Background- expert. The background is a single simple color that doesn't distract. Again you can petition wetpaint to remove the ads for an educator. Color Choices- expert. simple and straightforward. Spelling and Grammar- expert. There are no spelling errors and no major grammar mistakes. Copyright-. expert. No content needed citing. All links go to external webpages. Contact Info- there is
