DOE Loans to Make Nevada the "Saudi Arabia of Geothermal Energy" | Inhabitat ... - 0 views

  •
"The Silver State-based company has developed the Faulkner 1, a 49.5 MW geothermal power project at NGP's Blue Mountain site in northwestern Nevada. Currently, the project is planning two new injection wells to enhance the distribution of injected fluids and further augment the plant's power output. As such, the DOE is acting as loan guarantor for up to 80 percent of the $98.5 million loan to NGP for the scheme. As part of the Obama administration's Recovery Act, alternative energy has seen a real increase in investment with projects such as the Cape Wind Farm being finalized. Recent tragedies such as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill have only solidified support for alternative energy. Geothermal projects haven't dominated headlines like solar and wind projects have, but US Senator Harry Reid hopes to see that change. Speaking about the DOE's support, Senator Reid said, "I am glad to see economic recovery funding being used to put Nevadans to work on a project that will help us achieve energy independence" He went on to say, "Northern Nevada is the Saudi Arabia of geothermal energy.""

ANEEL - Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency - 0 views

  •
Aneel's College Board of Directors has authorized Copel (Paraná \nElectric Energy Company) to implement the pilot-project which determines the \nselling of exceeding energy, derived from animal waste, produced in small rural \nproprieties in Paraná. The project, named Distributed Generation with \nEnvironmental Sanitation Project, will allow the elimination of organic matter \nresulting from the hog creation, which will stop being released over rivers and \ndeposits such as Itaipu's. Such residue will be transformed, via biodigesters, \nin biogas, a fuel used in the generation of electric energy.

Clinton Foundation mulls world's largest solar project in Gujarat - 0 views

  • The project, tagged as one of the largest foreign direct investment (FDI) into the state, will also be a landmark project as the cost of power generation is likely to be 70 per cent less — around Rs 20,000 crore — than the conventional cost of generation, say sources close to the development. The project envisages an integrated solar city wherein all the raw materials including glass and panels will be produced by them, bringing down the cost substantially, said a senior government official. The cost of generation for thermal energy is about Rs 10-11 per unit. However, according to estimates of Clinton Foundation, the power produced in the solar city will cost around Rs 4 per unit, going by the scale of the project and technology advancement they have on hand.

» Smarter homes with an Amigo | Emerging Technology Trends | ZDNet.com - 0 views

  • I’m sure that some of you remember Jini, an initiative launched in 1998 by Bill Joy of Sun Microsystems. This software was supposed to turn all the devices we use into ‘network citizens,’ as Joy said. It never really worked. And even if the electronic devices we own are increasingly network compatible, they still are unable to work together intelligently. This is why the European Union has funded a project to allow your fridge or your TV to communicate with your phone or your PC. This project, named Amigo, will end in February 2008 and was granted €13 millions by the EU. This project enrolled powerful partners such as France Telecom, Microsoft or Philips which pay the rest of the bill, expected to reach €23 millions. The researchers think their approach will be successful because it’s an entirely open source project and everyone can participate. But read more…

Geothermal Market Update: Steady Growth in 2009 - Renewable Energy World - 0 views

  •
Over 100 confirmed and unconfirmed geothermal projects alone could add 4,000 MW of power capacity within a few years time, according to the latest survey by the GEA. A new survey, which should incorporate more projects inspired by the renewal of federal tax incentives, should be ready by February or March, according to Karl Gawell, the executive director of the association.

Quest CCS Project - Shell Canada - 0 views

  •
"Shell, on behalf of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project, a joint venture among Shell Canada (60 per cent), Chevron Canada Limited (20 per cent) and Marathon Oil Sands L.P. (20 per cent) has proposed a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The Quest CCS Project would be based at Shell's Scotford Upgrader, located near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Commissioned in 2003, the Upgrader turns bitumen from the Athabasca oil sands into synthetic crude oil, most of which is turned into consumer products such as gasoline."

Nexans Cables Provide the Vital Connections for Italy's Largest Solar Photovoltaic Project - 2 views

  • For the CSM project, Nexans has supplied 212 km of cable with a single 6 mm2 copper core and 804 km of cable with a single 10 mm² copper core. The cables comprise both standard ENERGYFLEX® and ENERGYFLEX® One Stripe featuring a coloured red or blue strip for ease of identification. The cables were installed at the site between March and June 2010. Schneider Electric has also purchased bare Nexans cable with a copper cross-section of 35 mm² to create the underground cable network for the CSM project.

50 New 'Manhattan Projects' - 0 views

  • With appropriate policies and actions, the scientific establishment can be organized to focus its resources on current global threats. To conduct such research, however, it would be necessary to mobilize our relevant intellectual resources and research facilities with the same determination that drove the wartime projects. A program of global scientific cooperation has tremendous potential to address many of the threats and challenges we face.

Aren't the terms '50' and 'Manhattan project' in the same sentence an apparant contradiction. If we have to invent the atomic bomb 50 times, we'd be in real trouble.

  • Amerigon Incorporated , a leader in developing and marketing products based on advanced thermoelectric (TE) technologies, today announced that its subsidiary, BSST LLC, will partner in a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project to develop a highly-efficient thermoelectric heating and cooling system for automobiles that will substantially reduce energy consumption, engine load and ultimately greenhouse gas emissions. The goal of the 36-month, up to $8.4 million project is to create a zonal heating and cooling system for automobiles that heats or cools the vehicle occupants, rather than the entire cabin and its components, thereby reducing the energy consumed by existing heating/cooling systems by one third.

EERE News: Superconducting Cable Project Points to More Efficient Grid - 0 views

  • DOE and SuperPower, Inc. commemorated on February 21 a $27 million project to install a 350-meter high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cable between two electrical substations in Albany. While that might not sound like much cable for the money, the project is the first demonstration of a technology that could someday be used to build a more energy efficient power grid. The HTS cable reduces energy loss by up to 10%, and wires using the same technology could potentially be integrated into generators, transformers, cables, and fault current limiters, making most of the equipment that produces and delivers power more energy efficient. On the other end of the power line, HTS wires can be employed in motors, providing an energy efficiency improvement for one of the largest electrical loads served by electric utilities.

Flow batteries - 0 views

  • The development of flow batteries has reached the stage of demonstration projects. Small- scale products are already available on a commercial basis, while for the larger-scale projects demonstrations have been started. These demonstration projects prove the technology and show that it can be applied on a large scale.

Green energy legislation could lure projects to state - 1 views

  •
"The Ohio Senate went "green" in a bipartisan way on Tuesday, May 18, voting 28-4 for legislation aimed at attracting renewable energy projects such as wind farms and the jobs they create to the state. A vote on similar legislation is expected today, May 19, in a House committee. Backers of the proposals in both chambers are optimistic about getting a final version to Gov. Ted Strickland for his signature before the legislature breaks for the summer. Strickland has called on the legislature to approve such legislation and hopes differences can be worked out, said Amanda Wurst, his spokeswoman."
