    "Wave Hub on course for summer deployment 17 May 2010 Wave Hub, the pioneering marine energy project, is on course to be deployed this summer with fabrication of sub-sea cables and the hub itself nearing completion. Wave Hub will create the world's largest test site for wave energy technology by building a grid-connected socket on the seabed, 10 miles off the coast of Cornwall, to which wave power devices can be connected and their performance evaluated."

    When people talk about types of renewable energy they normally say something like "wind power, solar power, geothermal" and list wave power almost as an afterthought. Though it certainly isn't as developed as these other renewable energy sources, significant potential exists. Though I wouldn't go so far as to say that the reason wave power plays second fiddle to other sources is because with most ways of generating power from the ocean the technical aspects take place out of sight, below the water, maybe that's part of it.   • Ocean Treader is a floating device. It will be tied up 1 – 2 miles offshore in ocean wave systems. It will not pose any obstruction on the shoreline. The theory has been put to test in wave tank. Now the company is producing a full size machine for offshore testing. Wave Treader has grown out of our work with Ocean Treader. Wave Treader uses its Sponsons and Arms and are mounted on the base of a static offshore structure. That structure can be a Wind Turbine or Tidal Turbine. By sharing the high infrastructure costs with another device, such as the foundation costs, cabling costs, etc., the economics of both devices are enhanced and the energy yield for a given sea area greatly improved.

  • Construction will start next week on the £42 million Wave Hub marine energy project in South West England.The Wave Hub, which will be located 10 miles off the north Cornwall coast, will serve as a test bed for wave energy devices by providing an electrical connection from the seabed at a depth of around 50 m to the national grid.Initially, the Wave Hub will have four berths for wave energy devices up to a maximum capacity of 20 MW, but has the potential to scale up to 50 MW in the future.Ocean Power Technologies has signed up to take the first berth when it becomes available to test the performance of its PowerBuoy wave energy converter.The first devices are expected to be deployed in 2011, once the cabling and connectors have been constructed. Starting on Monday, civil engineers will drill ducts from Cornwall coast at Hayle to connect to the subsea cable and a new electricity substation on the site of a former nearby power station.

It works on the basis of an "inertia motor" where "When a wave starts to lift the hollow sphere, the massive weight inside, because of its inertia, resists the movement and exerts terrific pressure in the lower cylinder. Finally the inertia of the weight is overcome. Then it possesses momentum. When the sphere reaches the crest of a wave, the combined effort of the momentum and the recoil of the huge, semi-elliptic springs exerts an equal pressure in the upper cylinder. The tremendous pressure is applied to oil, which, in turn, operates a special turbine which runs a generator. The current is conducted to the shore by submarine cable."

Scottish Government Approves Plan for Wave Farm - 0 views

    The Scottish Government granted ScottishPower planning permission for what the company says would be the world's largest wave farm. The announcement is a milestone for the $20.4 million project which will see four floating generators, designed to convert wave movement into electricity, positioned off the coast of the new facility's sister site - the European Marine Test Centre also in Orkney. Expected to be operating by 2008, the 160-metre Pelamis Devices (Sea Snakes), are anticipated to provide around 3 megawatts (MW) of electricity.

  • On December 21, the Finavera Renewables Ocean Energy, Ltd conditionally secured a FERC license for its hydrokinetic power project located 1.9 nautical miles offshore Washington State.  The 5-year license to the Makah Bay Offshore Wave Pilot Project is designed "to demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of wave energy conversion power plants near coastal communities."   The project will generate an average of 1,500 MWh annually.
