Bangalore, India-based social venture SELCO India said it raised growth financing to expand its program to provide renewable energy to low-income homes and businesses in India.

India will subsidize the running of solar power plants to help develop a renewable energy infrastructure, where high costs can be prohibitive, the minister for renewable energy said on Wednesday. Renewable energy accounts for about 7.5 percent of India's installed generation capacity of 127,673 MW, a rate that compares favorably with much of the rest of the world. Much of this capacity is wind-based, and the share of solar power is small. "My ministry will provide financial assistance amounting to 12 rupees (30 cents) per kilowatt hour in case of solar photovoltaic and 10 rupees per kilowatt hour in case of solar thermal power fed to the electricity grid," Vilas Muttemwar said in a press conference.

TT: The second concept we are looking at is the wind and solar hybrid. A lot of sites with solar has wind available. There is already an infrastructure build, substation, and other things. We are working on providing the technical solutions to our customers… if they want to put in solar they can, and we'll provide the integration part to the grid. That way they can reduce the overall project cost for the combination.

Abstract Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) techniques are gaining popularity in sustainable energy management. The techniques provide solutions to the problems involving conflicting and multiple objectives. Several methods based on weighted averages, priority setting, outranking, fuzzy principles and their combinations are employed for energy planning decisions. A review of more than 90 published papers is presented here to analyze the applicability of various methods discussed. A classification on application areas and the year of application is presented to highlight the trends. It is observed that Analytical Hierarchy Process is the most popular technique followed by outranking techniques PROMETHEE and ELECTRE. Validation of results with multiple methods, development of interactive decision support systems and application of fuzzy methods to tackle uncertainties in the data is observed in the published literature. About 63 percent of Indian IT shops have completed a retrofit of existing server rooms to increase energy efficiency, or have a pilot project underway, according to a recent study. It's similar in Brazil, but IT companies there tend to favor building new server rooms before modifying existing ones.

With an investment of US $10 billion dollars in energy efficiency improvements, India's economy would benefit from its potentially vast annual energy savings of 183.5 billion kilowatt hours, according to a new report from the World Resources Institute (WRI). "India's energy demand is expected to more than double by 2030. There is a dramatic need for domestic and international energy efficiency technology providers, service providers, and equipment manufacturers to develop innovative ways to conserve energy," said Robin Murphy, WRI vice president of external relations.
