Spotlight: Free Social Media Tools for Educators : April 2008 : THE Journal - 0 views

  •
While most districts are still tackling Web-based collaboration tools from pedagogical and security perspectives, a large number of teachers are already out there using these tools to supplement instruction, engage learners, and encourage their students to become producers of information, as well as consumers of it. In other words, they're experimenting. And here are some of the free tools they're using to do it.

Effects of Technology on Classrooms and Students - 0 views

  • Students clearly take pride in being able to use the same computer-based tools employed by professionals. As one teacher expressed it, "Students gain a sense of empowerment from learning to control the computer and to use it in ways they associate with the real world." Technology is valued within our culture. It is something that costs money and that bestows the power to add value. By giving students technology tools, we are implicitly giving weight to their school activities. Students are very sensitive to this message that they, and their work, are important.

Many of my disadvantaged students respond the most positively to using the computer activities. This could be because they see technology as valuable.
  • When students are using technology as a tool or a support for communicating with others, they are in an active role rather than the passive role of recipient of information transmitted by a teacher, textbook, or broadcast. The student is actively making choices about how to generate, obtain, manipulate, or display information.

This makes the learning much more interesting for each student. It makes the learning a very personal experience even though all the students are doing similar tasks at their computers. Some teachers think a computer activity is impersonal but my experience shows the opposite.

Not every school will be able to afford one computer per child, let alone have the luxury of using parent-purchased cell phones for classroom instruction.

Giving Students' learning Choices Through Technology « Education with Technol... - 0 views

  • I wonder what school would be like if we could have more options and choices available to students. Sure all students have to learn the same basic standards. How much choice do we give the students in how they go about doing it? Do we provide lectures, demonstrations, guided instructions, interactive activities, group activities, and self-tests in various digital formats for them? By using technology we can have many different forms of learning the standard available to the students. What, if instead of lock stepping the class in terms of the students’ learning, we freed up the class to make their own choices? They can select in what order or format to see/hear/experience the learning.

Educon 2.1 - 0 views

  •
EduCon 2.1 is both a conversation and a conference. And it is not a technology conference. It is an education conference. It is, hopefully, an innovation conference where we can come together, both in person and virtually, to discuss the future of schools. Every session will be an opportunity to discuss and debate ideas -- from the very practical to the big dreams.

Dianne Krause, Instructional Technology specialist, from Blue Bell, PA USA (http://diannekrause.edublogs.org) has put together an incredible e toolbox wiki that is worth sharing with anyone using a wiki or any web 2.o tool! She shares the tool and gives an example, exactly the type of thing inquiring teachers want to see. She is modeling instead of just expecting them to figure it out! Great job, Diane - you are my new wiki go-to gal! Wow! From digital portfolios to online databases and Ning, she does a GREAT job on this wiki of putting it all together.

Woogi World - Teaching kids Internet safety, life values, and fun! - 2 views

  •
Amanda Stone and the teachers in Hoover City use this to teach internet safety. They have to pass certain courses. The teachers set up the student accounts and the teachers manage their own classroom -- controlling their buddy lists and everything. The teachers connect w/ their students on the weekends and off times w/ their kids. Great entry to a virtual world!!! It bans them if they do innappropriate things -- so their goal for 5th grade is to get zero bans for the year. The teacher can control it. Each student have their own woogie -- eg. Davisteacher would be me -- my students would be davis1 davis2, etc. Pretty cool.

Great place to teach digital citizenship, highly recommended by Amanda Stone, instructional technology coach in Hoover City, AL.
