My "gut feeling" is that when we teach students to write, we do so too methodically. We sometimes allow adherence to form trump creativity... We neglect audience. We're churning out writer-robots who spit back the format they think we want to see. We graphic-organizer-them to exhaustion.

FDR's private school president listed these four missions for his students ranked by importance. 1) Religion 2) Character 3) Athletics 4) Academics His president at Harvard felt and required a few basic courses and then students should take what they want. The social science and math teachers created well rounded to keep their jobs, I could care if my layer or doctor is well rounded, me, I want success!

Surprising new research may rewrite learning theory as Brown University scientists contend that distractions do not necessarily impede the learning process of a motor task. Investigators discovered that if attention was as divided during recall of a motor task as it was during learning the task, people performed as if there were no distractions at either stage. Thus, the real issue is that inconsistent distraction can impair our recollection of the task. As long as our attention is as divided when we have to recall a motor skill as it was when we learned it, we'll do just fine, say the researchers.

FROM THE ABOUT PAGE... the real purpose of this exercise is to alleviate our natural tendency to edit everything-and learn to flow. an analogy would be a film camera: when a film is shot, the camera just rolls and captures everything-good and bad. when all the shooting is complete, the raw film is edited into a cohesive piece. the camera operator doesn't keep stopping the camera and rewinding and editing on-the-fly-the camera just rolls. if it were to stop, some of the best performances and spontaneous moments might be missed. so: be the camera. well, that's a stupid saying, but you get the idea. in writing-just flow. go back later and edit. Go write.

"The education twitter-sphere has been all a-buzz today with stuff about helping (or failing) bright pupils. I am not at all qualified to contribute directly to the debate; I can only recount my own experiences, and anecdotal evidence is not very valuable in such a case. Because of my work as an examiner, I meet history teachers from scores of other schools every summer, and I do not think my approaches were in any way unusual. Yes, I taught at an independent school, so it was selective in terms of ability to pay fees. It was not very selective in terms of ability; plenty of our pupils did well to get C passes at GCSE with a couple of Bs thrown in."

A Collection of really interesting math games and other games to use with kids. Especially useful for smartboards. I tried the pizza fraction game and it lookd really good. Plus the site has taken the ads off to make it better educationally.
