Three Trends That Will Shape the Future of Curriculum | MindShift - 85 views

  • Given the growing momentum of these trends, what does it mean for students, teachers, schools, and the education community at large? Collaborating and customizing. Educators are learning to work together, with their students, and with other experts in creating content, and are able to tailor it to exactly what they need. Critical thinking. Students are learning how to effectively find content and to discern reliable sources. Democratizing education. With Internet access becoming more ubiquitous, the children of the poorest people are able to get access to the same quality education as the wealthiest. Changing the textbook industry. Textbook publishers are finding ways to make themselves relevant to their digital audience. Emphasizing skills over facts. Curriculum incorporates skill-building.

Sorry forgot the three trends (the above are consequences of these trends) 1. Digital delivery "No longer shackled to books as their only source of content, educators and students are going online to find reliable, valuable, and up-to-the-minute information" 2. Interest driven curriculum "Though students typically have to wait until their third year of college to choose what they learn, the idea of K-12 education being tailored to students' own interests is becoming more commonplace" 3. Skills 2.0 " Instead of learning from others who have the credentials to 'teach' in this new networked world, we learn with others whom we seek (and who seek us) on our own and with whom we often share nothing more than a passion for knowing"

NASA - The Space Shuttle - 49 views

  •
From the site: "Since 1981, NASA space shuttles have been rocketing from the Florida coast into Earth orbit. The five orbiters - Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour - have flown more than 130 times, carrying over 350 people into space and travelling more than half a billion miles, more than enough to reach Jupiter. Designed to return to Earth and land like a giant glider, the shuttle was the world's first reusable space vehicle. More than all of that, though, the shuttle program expanded the limits of human achievement and broadened our understanding of our world. In this feature, we look back at the Shuttle's historic missions, the people it flew into space, and its achievements."

Education Week: Teaching Digital Writing: More Than Blogs and Wikis - 1 views

  • These days, pen-and-paper and word-processing skills are not enough to fully prepare students for writing beyond K-12. Students also need direct instruction in digital writing—or writing created or read on a computer or other Internet-connected device. Digital writing requires both traditional writing skills—knowledge of the process, conventions, organizational structure, etc.—and more advanced techniques, such as the ability to meld visual, audio, and text into a single piece.

iPad puts tech in schools - Omaha.com - 0 views

  • One area where iPads are showing particular promise — both in terms of cost and usefulness — is in special education. In January, the Elkhorn district began testing iPads equipped with a $200 application that can produce speech. For some students with difficulty speaking, the iPads can replace a more traditional assistive device that costs about $8,000, resulting in significant savings for the district, said Lee Frye, the district's director of student services. The devices also blend in more easily in social settings, in school or ordering at a fast food restaurant. “Other kids think they're cool,” he said, “so there's a social benefit.”

BPS Research Digest: A preliminary psychology of homework - 23 views

  •
From the site: "The beneficial effect of homework, if they get round to it, on pupils' subsequent academic grades has been shown before. It's somewhat surprising, therefore, how little research has looked at how teenagers feel about homework, where they do it and who they do it with. Hayal Zackar and her team have made a start".

This is actually in two parts. One shows how to build a reasonable microscope. The second (which seems a bit more fiddly) shows how to build a spectroscope. Minimal costs.
