This is an excellent, well used, stable, secure grading program that is FREE. It includes some bells and whistles: Attendance, Weighted Assignments, Integrated Quiz and Discussion, Messaging, Wikis, Flashcards, and Calendar. The gradebook can be easily exported to Excel to upload into Banner, etc. It is available on multiple-platforms via app and web. My students take their quizzes on their phone, iPad, laptop. The perfect BYOD grading program. For School Systems, they offer a paid service where administrators and parents can see the gradebook.

Zotero is an open-source program developed by George Mason University's Center for History and the New Media. You have to teach your students how to use it, but it is time well spent. They can create individual and group libraries, automatically create bibliographies and citations in CMS, MLA, APA, etc., and grow research skills. Most word cloud programs work in the same, straight-forward way; the more a word is used in the text, the bigger it is shown in the cloud. A glance at a cloud is an easy way to preview a passage, or to analyze text.

Free "learn to program" - also works with scratch projects. Includes class management tool for student assignments. My students like it better than Scratch.

We've been "Scratching" for a while, and I'm curious if they compared Scratch 1.4 or 2.0, the Web-based version now out, which my students like better than the original. There are classroom management elements coming for Scratch in the near future, but I did find that there were a few more interesting controls in Tynker, particularly the "physics" blocks.... If it gets kids coding, its all good :)

Schools must regard 100Mbps Broadband not as an opportunity to do existing things faster, but to do new things altogether. These are things that some of our students are doing at home (and occasionally in school) - creating music, animations, sound, music, programming, curating, remixing - that should be given a voice and a place in our schools. this type of work will help support at least four of Hargreaves gateways: Learning to Learn, Assessment for Learning, New Technologies (ICT) and Student Voice.
