Internet privacy is the desire or mandate of personal privacy concerning transactions or transmission of data via the Internet. It involves the exercise of control over the type and amount of information a person reveals about themself on the Internet and who may access such information. The term is often understood to mean universal Internet privacy, i.e. every user of the Internet possessing Internet privacy.

An excellent article to make the case for digital citizenship education, I love the quote at the end that the law "can't take the place of good manners, social norms, and etiquette." Do we think that students just develop good manners on their own? Perhaps manners, norms, and etiquette would much better evolve with multiple generations and ages working together as we discuss and grapple with such issues. This is another excellent article about the changing state of the law and the Internet and includes the precedent that anonymous doesn't really mean anonymous any more - particularly if the anonymous person breaks the law.

The biggest privacy offenders (hat tip Lifehacker podcast) include Facebook, gmail, MSN Live, Skype, Twitter, Dropbox, Google Plus. This demonstrates whoch internet service providers share your personal data without an official court order. If you look at the infographic, you'll see that Facebook is more than twice the second offender, gmail. Many concerned about privacy are moving to services like PATH for just that reason.

Researchers found that study participants who exhibited signs of Internet overuse engaged disproportionately than the normal population in sites devoted to pornography, gaming, social networking and chat rooms. They theorized that Internet addicts' use of these sites as replacements for real-life socializing was resulting in depression. However, there is debate as to whether depression results from, or is a cause, or internet overuse. A study published in the "Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine" found depression, as well as ADHD and social phobia, to increase the chances of excessive Internet use in adolescents. Sleep Disturbances Evidence also suggests that internet overuse can contribute to sleep disturbances. Studies of Chinese and American children, published in the "Journal of Sleep" and the "Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics," found that computer use among adolescents was associated with later bed times, later waking times, less restful sleep and an overall decrease in sleep. The use of computers before bedtime has also raised concerns among sleep experts, including Phyllis Zee, a neuroscience professor at Northwestern University, that the light from screens is affecting circadian rhythms and possibly contributing to insomnia.

Scareware. Yes, it is a term. Scaring people into thinking they have a virus. Knowledge is power and it will also save you money. Being educated about computers pays over your life. It is time for all of us to be educated and savvy. I know someone taken by this scam. "English-speaking consumers in the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the U.K. were targeted in the global scam, regulators said. Most of the scammers were based in India, but some also came from the U.S. and U.K. The scam involved cold callers who claimed to work for major technology companies, such as Microsoft or Google, and who told consumers they had viruses on their PCs, according to regulators. The callers would attempt to dupe users into giving them remote access to their computers, locking the user out while attempting to "fix" the malware that the scammer claimed was on the machine."

Whatever you look up or plan on the internet people can see it. If the government pays for it they can see what you are looking at. People can stalk you on the internet. "Are you planning a trip? A wedding? Have you been searching your medical symptoms on WebMD, or Google stalking your high school crush? Did all of your friends wish you a Happy Birthday on your Facebook page? If so, your financial status, religious beliefs, medical history, birth date and hometown have all been exposed, recorded and compiled into a virtual database that functions as your digital alter ego, a sort of online avatar. That critical mass of information may be accessible to the government or to anyone else who asks (or pays) for it."

This incredible article from the Atlantic talks about who is tracking you and how to understand it. It is very balanced and informative and a great post to share with students as you discuss privacy. "As users, we move through our Internet experiences unaware of the churning subterranean machines powering our web pages with their cookies and pixels trackers, their tracking code and databases. We shop for wedding caterers and suddenly see ring ads appear on random web pages we're visiting. We sometimes think the ads following us around the Internet are "creepy." We sometimes feel watched. Does it matter? We don't really know what to think."
