The social behavior of moderate computer users and nonusers was roughly the same in terms of sociability and relationships with friends and family. Increased Hostility and Aggression After the massacre at Columbine High School in 1999, researchers and educators paid more attention to violent video games such as Doom, the daily game of choice for one of the two teenage killers. The key variable appears to be a preference for violent games, rather than the amount of time a child plays such games. Even playing Mortal Kombat for a short time increases a child's hostility and aggression. Brain Drain In a small study of 18 Chinese university students, published in the "PLos ONE" journal and reported on Mail Online, kids who played games on their computers at least eight hours a day, six days per week showed alarming amounts of atrophy in parts of their brain, as measured by MRI scans. The scans also found abnormalities in the white matter of the brain, which coordinate communication between different areas of the mind. On Mail Online, Dr. Aric Sigman of the Royal Society of Medicine called the July 2011 report a "wake-up call." Experts fear that in addition to cognitive damage, heavy Internet use might reduce the inhibitions and decision-making ability of children, leading to damaged relationships with family members, peers and authority figures.

Even though the evidence is limited, many countries advise children especially should limit their use of cellphones. The United Kingdom, German, Belgium, Israel, Russia, France, Canada, and India are all included. James McNamee, division chief for health effects and assessments in Health Canada's bureau of consumer and clinical radiation protection, said, "There has been relatively little science done on children and children's cellphone use, and children are going to be using these devices for a much larger period of their life span. Their brains and immune systems are still developing." Health Canada said cellphone users may take practical steps to reduce exposure, such as: Limit the length of cellphone calls. Replace cellphone calls with text messages or use "hands-free" devices. Encourage those under the age of 18 to limit the cellphone use.

I think this kind of thing is good, but never replaces a parent talking to a child. However, if there is nothing that "can be done" because local laws and others have no method of dealing with it, then I don't know if it will breed frustration. I think every computer should have an easy way to grab screenshots like my fireshot program in firefox. I think this should be part of every web browser.

    The study shows that everything from iPods to smartphones to tablet computers are now a regular part of kids' lives, with kids under 8 averaging two hours a day with all screen media. Among the key findings: 42% of children under 8 years old have a television in their bedroom. Half (52%) of all 0- to 8-year-olds have access to a new mobile device, such as a smartphone, video iPod, or iPad/tablet. More than a third (38%) of children this age have used one of these devices, including 10% of 0-to 1-year-olds, 39% of 2- to 4-year-olds, and more than half (52%) of 5- to 8-year-olds. In a typical day, one in 10 (11%) 0- to 8-year-olds uses a smartphone, video iPod, iPad, or similar device to play games, watch videos, or use other apps. Those who do such activities spend an average of 43 minutes a day doing so. In addition to the traditional digital divide, a new "app gap" has developed, with only 14% of lower-income parents having downloaded new media apps for their kids to use, compared to 47% of upper-income parents. Clearly, media has become a staple in young kids' daily lives and influences them in ways we don't yet fully understand. ACLU Sues School For Punishing 12-Year-Old Over Facebook Comment - 2 views

    You'll want to read this lawsuit as it lies on the cusp of what we will experience in schools in the future. In this case, a 12 year old girl (on Facebook, despite the fact she is technically too young to be) is suing a school district (via the ACLU) for punishment because of her use of Facebook. I think the school went too far when it required her to hand over her Facebook and email login to the school, but we'll see what the courts decide. The ACLU says this is a violation of free speech. Stay tuned and realize that students have a right to hate you, say unkind things about you, etc. There is a fine line in what is allowed and what isn't. Just because we CAN deal with issues relating to bullying of other children - that doesn't mean we can wear our own chips on our shoulders and require that kids pretend to like us. It is hurtful when children say unkind things and many don't realize everyone is watching. If students are not understanding the consequences of their actions, then I partially blame any school that doesn't step up and teach digital citizenship.

  • These photos are legal. The actions of the user who favorited these is also legal (although incredibly disgusting). I did not want photos of my child to appear here. So, this is what I did: 1) Blocked the user. This means my photos would no longer appear in the list. However, if your photos are viewable to the public, this means they can still be viewed, just not favorited. 2) Contacted Flickr: I reported this user, and within a couple of hours, the user was taken down.

    This is why I don't share the photos of my children online in public places. After one pic of a child at school was favorited in this way, I took the pic down and am ridiculously vigilant about checking to see how many photos have been favorited and which ones to see if there is one that some sicko has looked at.
