    This is a very sad topic, i think everyone should be able to get maternity leave no matter the standards because there is nothing more beautiful than seeing a mother and father so happy with their new born baby. I believe that people should have longer maternity leave.

    I think everyone should be able to have maternity leave because its important for the mother and father to be with their baby. I think they should also be paid while taking this time off because they still need to be able to support the child and that cant be done if they are not making money.

    My wife gave birth to our daughter back in August, she is a school teacher and it's very heartbreaking to know that current practices in the state of Arizona have defined pregnancy as a "short term disability." True there are aspects that are disabling, but the definition itself is what removes the obligation of the state to pay for leave, instead leaving woman in the education sector to pay for supplemental health care as current healthcare for public workers does not support pregnancy. At least in our case, I'm sure there are very rare exceptions.

I totally agree with this. How can we ignore our health after having a baby. I have 5 children and I was fortunate enough to not have to work. I was able to stay home and heal, and most importantly bond with my baby. I recovered well post child birth, and I was able to be the best mother I could be to my children.

    This is a huge social injustice towards the mothers who have just given birth. Making maternity leave as a paid family leave is wrong because the mothers have to later make up all the time they took off to care for their newborn, which can be months.

    I think new moms definitely get the shaft when it comes to maternity leave. Just watching people in my life have their kids, and the struggles that can come after besides adjusting to new life I think it is a complete injustice that new moms don't have the option to have more paid time, separate from their regular PTO.

    I think that maternity leave is vitally important for a mother and her child. However, what about fathers the child is just as much theirs yet little to no maternity leave is given. Usually if they take the time off for the birth of the child it comes out of their paid time off if they would like an extended amount of time.

    The United States definitely falls behind compared to most modernized countries in-regards to this. The fact that studies show much higher results for emotional bonding between parents, and the retention of employees for the company they're employed for, when giving maternal/paternal leave. I understand the reason why it's difficult for many American businesses to be competitive to some European industries that can have months off at a time for this, but even a couple paid weeks may make all the difference at a minimum for both parents, to adapt, and prepare for their new schedule/lives.

    I feel like every women should be guaranteed paid maternity leave. The government constantly wants us to re produce to keep the world going, so they should encourage women that they'll be fine with money and won't have to worry about missing work.

    Maternity leave should be a MUST. Pregnancy is tough and the delivery is life changing. Mother's go through all different kinds of changes.     I'm interested in this topic too. I feel that organizations who offer this benefit will see the return from the parent when they return to work. I've seen some new mothers return to work when they are not ready, and they end up having decreased performance, or end up looking for new work a few weeks later so they can be with their new baby more. This creates more cost for the company than paid leave would have.

Having this opportunity made both, mothers and fathers, take advantage of the paid leave to be home raising and nurturing their new child. The biggest shock was that most of the people who took the paid leave were the parents who were on the lower income scale.

    In my opinion, paternity leave isn't something that should be issued. They can bond with the child when they get home from their job. Meanwhile, the mother just stays home and takes care of the baby since she'll have to rest and recover those few weeks post giving birth anyways.

    Pros and cons to fathers getting maternity leave depending on the family and if its paid too of course. My opinion is if you have other small children who need to be attended to after just giving birth, need assistants due to some complications after giving birth or if a father wants to share 6 wks at home with his new baby then why not give them maternity leave? Then you have independent women who don't need dad at home getting in the way or adding to her list of chores all while caring for a new baby. If my husband was on maternity leave I would have a "honey-do list" for him, diaper changing tasks and cooking meals.

    This is a really good article because it also talks about how race affects the pay gap. Most articles I find on the topic ignore how non-white women are paid less than white women. The struggle for mothers attempting to reenter the workplace is horrible.

    A reality unfortunately, in our society. It is almost hilarious how you read on all papers when you are hired :"we are an equal opportunity employer, no discrimination of any kind..." and yet the first thing you notice is the pay you get in comparison with a man who is less qualified than you but...he is a man. And, as kat2222004 pointed, very hard for mothers to reenter the work field, the mother is not trusted anymore to be a reliable employee.

    The 77 cent claim has been repeatedly refuted because it does not accommodate for the fact that women are more likely to choose lower paying jobs or jobs with benefits. Men on average work longer hours. Single, childless women in major cities earn more than men. Women obtain 58% of college degrees. Women are less likely to go into STEM jobs.     I definitely agree with this article. Even if some people like to think this isn't a problem it definitely is. For men and women in the same field regardless of what that field is men often get the higher income than women do. My mother is a major example of this and often talks about how the men in the same department as her make more money even when they produce less work that generally isn't that good. On top of that my mother works the same amount of hours and even more than average in a given week yet still doesn't come close to the pay gap. Of course, there may be inconsistency in statistics but it is definitely still an issue to be aware of because it still exists.
