Equal Pay - 5 views

  •
Women deserve equal pay. On average, they are paid less than their male counterparts. It effects their spending power and what women receive in their social security.

This is a really good article because it also talks about how race affects the pay gap. Most articles I find on the topic ignore how non-white women are paid less than white women. The struggle for mothers attempting to reenter the workplace is horrible.
  •
A reality unfortunately, in our society. It is almost hilarious how you read on all papers when you are hired :"we are an equal opportunity employer, no discrimination of any kind..." and yet the first thing you notice is the pay you get in comparison with a man who is less qualified than you but...he is a man. And, as kat2222004 pointed, very hard for mothers to reenter the work field, the mother is not trusted anymore to be a reliable employee.
  •
Really good article. I saw this as I was choosing a topic to discuss in our discussion last week. I 100% agree that women should receive the same pay as men. Women are such hard workers whether it is in the work force, or for those who have to maintain a family as well.
  •
The 77 cent claim has been repeatedly refuted because it does not accommodate for the fact that women are more likely to choose lower paying jobs or jobs with benefits. Men on average work longer hours. Single, childless women in major cities earn more than men. Women obtain 58% of college degrees. Women are less likely to go into STEM jobs. Also statistics are easily manipulated. Watch TJ explain the wage gap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWAlg48fNwE

I definitely agree with this article. Even if some people like to think this isn't a problem it definitely is. For men and women in the same field regardless of what that field is men often get the higher income than women do. My mother is a major example of this and often talks about how the men in the same department as her make more money even when they produce less work that generally isn't that good. On top of that my mother works the same amount of hours and even more than average in a given week yet still doesn't come close to the pay gap. Of course, there may be inconsistency in statistics but it is definitely still an issue to be aware of because it still exists.

  •
This article breaks down and shows the difference between pay gaps in race and gender. It also explains on why it is a thing.
  •
I love how this website uses graphics to explain the ideas. I also think it has shocking statistics and information.
  •
This article was extremely intriguing. It gives wonderful statistics between the gender equality differences of men and women. The hardest one I found to believe was the difference between pay of men and women in the medical profession of surgeons and physicians.

The Gender Pay Gap in Nursing - 4 views

the gender pay gap in nursing. Men make more money than woman nurses

It bottles my mind of how women are still in equal to men. We are more advanced now than the 1900's. We should be able to treat women the same across all platforms especially healthcare.
  •
There definitely needs to be a change in this, gender inequality shouldn't be an issue anymore. Especially when the majority of nurses are women.
  •
This is so interesting I had no idea about this one reading the article is mind-boggling how can they justify paying someone less solely based on their gender. Amazing read!
  •
It really makes me angry that anyone could think that this is okay. Someone's pay should be dictated by the work they put in instead of their gender or race.
  •
The fact that this sort of inequality still exists just based on sex is crazy! And like your article states, gender is not the only affected area, but black, indigenous and people of color as well. Pay should vary on knowledge and performance, not ones ethnicity.

The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap (Spring 2016) - 0 views

  •
This article provides the statistics of women and men's pay and how they differ. Women are paid .79 cents to every man's dollar in America.
  •
This is a very reliable source for researching the gender pay gap. It's great that it is up to date. That .21 cents matters.
  •
This is very wrong for companies to do. Character is what determines work ethic not who you are physically. its all about the motivation of an individual.

Arizona statutory rape victim forced to pay child support - 7 views

  •
Mainly talks about rare instances that happen and a father ends up paying child support. Goes into different examples of these kinds of cases from other states. Also, mentions how Arizona pursue child support cases and treats them differently from custody arrangements.
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
Wow...I don't agree that a female rape victim should be forced to share custody or receive child support from her assailant it should be her right as the victim. But a male victim, this is new to me. However, I agree if he is a victim she should be charged and he should have a choice. Charges should have been made against her back when it happened or they should do the math and still charge her. As for the child it's sad but if he doesn't want to be apart of her life because he wants nothing to do with his assailant, The assailant is at fault. I don't think I would want my son to have to be involved with a women who raped him because a child was conceived during her criminal act. It's sad because then the child suffers. Mixed feelings on this subject.
  •
This whole article is disturbing on so many levels. First of all he was 14 years old but that does not change the fact that he is a parent and has responsibilities just based on that alone. BUT if the courts are going to recognize the fact that is was a rape why do they not charge the mother? I say he takes her to court for custody and makes her pay child support. The poor child can not win either way.
  •
This is appalling. The woman should be charged. Its sad that many look away when its a male that is a rape victim. They deserve to get justice and not get charged for child support. The victim should have a say on what they want if they want to be involved or not, but I feel like they shouldn't have to deal with their rapist.
  •
Wow this is another disturbing article! The fact of the matter is that men alone have it very very hard when it comes to their rights as fathers. And in instances like this, even harder. The fact that he got served with papers years later is very sad. That mother clearly just wants to collect money. But what would she even tell her daughter about her dad? That she had sex with a 14 year old boy?? This is so disturbing and there should be laws in place for situations like this and for fathers in general.

Arizona sharply limits welfare to 12 months - 2 views

  •
This article talks about Arizona cutting off welfare benefits after 12 months of usage. Arizona wants allocate the money into other programs. Welfare is hindering people more than helping.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
I think if they want to get people off welfare there should be a more effective way to push everyone to get back on their feet. Have the adults do volunteer work, drug testing and education and or work training to fall back on when the benefits are cut off. This will help with the adults who have no work experience or education, prevent drug users from taking advantage of the help and maybe some people will think I should just get a job that pays more. Mcdonalds pays $11.00 an hour now and you don't need an education to start plus they help pay for you to continue your education as a benefit. I was a single mom for 7 years, the struggle is real. After several different jobs I finally got stable at one, went to school full-time for 3 years then took a break, rented my own place, had a bucket for a car but got me where I needed, sacrifice and determination got me far without government help. Had I had government help maybe I would have been done with school years ago at 28 and I wouldn't be furthering my education now at 36.
  •
I was also a single parent of three for 13 years and yes the struggle is real but at what point do you say enough is enough? I agree people need help sometimes to get back on their feet but when do we put a limit on it? Unfortunately some do take advantage of the system and do not even put in the effort to be independent.
  •
I am not a mother personally, I can only imagine the struggles of having children, I can barely make it alone. However i have witnessed people around me who take advantage of this system and have heard others who pay taxes vent about how it is unfair. I agree that it would be a good idea for the government to have more opportunities for these families to get back on their feet. Drug testing would be a good idea and work experience would help them once their 12 month period ends to find an appropriate job to help with their finances.

Privacy Lost: Does anybody care? - 8 views

Is the loss of civil liberties worth the convenience of technology?
  • ...6 more comments...
  •
This is such a compelling question, isn't it? We all rely on technology to make our lives "easier." But what price do we pay? We have now had to start worrying about new things such as what our online presence tells current and future employers.
  •
So far it does seem to be worth it but it could a whole different feeling in the future. The only effect I see is annoying ads that mysteriously relate to what I have searched for in Safari. I'm a little bit scared of what someone with ill intentions could do with all my information collected by technology.
  •
Very controversial. We like the commodity of using the technology, how easy it is for us to do almost anything, but then we ask ourselves, and I think everyone here, is it safe. Is my information safe, secure. what if someone, somewhere, decides to play and steals my information. It is scary. And, how can I protect myself and be 100% sure that nothing happens. As christiana333 mentioned, everything that we search, shows up as advertisement in whatever page we open. We have now the smart phones, cute ones and lots of apps that help us in many ways, but do we really need them? Or, should we just keep the basic functions of a phone and nothing else, because really what we need is a phone to communicate?
  •
Technology just makes our lives so much easier. Like ktfaithtom mentioned, but what price do we pay or will we pay? I use my phone for pretty much anything and I always think what if someone does steal my information? As a mother I worry about my childrens privacy as well. What are the right steps to making sure our information is secured correctly?
  •
It's an interesting article and topic. It makes one wonder if we have really gone so far down the proverbial rabbit hole with technology that the levels of privacy we once enjoyed are now lost to us forever.
  •
Have you ever wondered how grocery stores know just what coupons to mail you. Stores like Fry's use our membership number to gather information to determine our spending habits. Everything about our lives is stored in some computer somewhere. Three times last year I received a notice from a two major stores and one hospital that my information may have been stolen by an employee. Wow, we are not even safe at the hospital. I used to call my boy the conspiracy squad. After reading this article, may be I should have been listening to them.
  •
Technology has and will always be a huge part of my life. Having grown up with a brother heavily into gaming, programming, and IT work I got to see first hand the in's and out's of how the web works. It all comes down to how you manage your own security. Of course, there will always be the paranoia of being monitored but that has been happening for a long time. It all comes down to being cautious with what you do alone and or over technologies.
  •
This book captures the many facets of information gathering by digital dossiers. It reminded me of the recent unveiled programs called Tempora and Prism used by the United Kingdom and NSA. The extent of these programs capacity to siphon user data iset deeply guarded and not known in detail, however the dossiers gathered by our internet traffic on an individual basis should alarm users. I belive privacy is priceless, if I told my grandfather who passed in 2006 the extent we divulge our personal information on social media he would probably find it unbelievable. He was born in 1920 became an officer in the United States Air Force and served in WW2. The idea of privacy has changed with each generation. The way we perceive the handheld devices we all carry as young as the age of 5, may seem to our greatest generation who is currently exiting our society as a mere tracking device for big brother. This reading was very informative.

NEA - It's Time to Push for Free College. Education is Key - 2 views

shared by tif2171863 on 22 Sep 17 - No Cached

I think this is a great topic. Since, we are all in college and know first hand the expenses of college. This article argues to push for free college. He talks about a college in Georgia where they have scholarships for free college. I think this is rather interesting!
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
This is an interesting thought however, I feel that too easily the system would get bogged down. Also, the money to pay for this free college would have to come from tax-payers. In reality I don't see how it would work. I know in Germany college is free IF a student has a certain score on a standardized test, so that the government sees the student as a worthwhile investment. It sounds harsh, but it works. I think in America too many things would cause that rule to be derailed. Also, Germany has as much smaller and homogeneous population, so that works better.
  •
I am a person who is all for free education..in theory. Like Amanda, I do not believe it would be beneficial to provide the United States with free education because we as the tax papers would suffer. However, I do wish the government would make it so that we are not in such crippling debt once our education is over.
  •
As much as I would love to see free education, it would not be free because it would come down to the average tax payer to pay for it. I do however wish to see lower interest rates.
  •
I wish education could be 100% free. Everyone is always pushing us younger people to pursue a college degree without knowing that college isn't just a sign up and go kind of thing. You have to pay thousands of dollars either out of pocket or by federal funding.
