Details on State Prayer in Public School Laws - FindLaw - 2 views

  •
Prayer has been a topic of some controversy with the public school systems in America for over 50 years, it has been federally banned other than silent prayers, and in some states it has been banned all together. This is a disgusting violation of Americans first amendment right, as well as our inalienable rights as human of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, for some prayer is a pursuit of happiness. To ban ones ability to pray in school, while they are being taught as if God were not real, is a outrageous violation of the rights of not just Christians, but Islamic folk, and people of Jewish decent. Prayer offers peace, and a hope for salvation, and a denial of such ability in a place where most students attend is an outrageous violation of our rights as humans, and as Americans.

  •
A constitutional right of all citizens is the freedom of religion, and praying in schools is a way of exercising that right. If praying is banned in public education, then the constitutional right to practice religion is being infringed upon.
  •
While religious freedoms are very important in our country we need to look at what the purpose of school is. In my opinion, schools are not morally obligated but factually obligated. This article states that you must look at the religious aspect to understand history which I completely agree. I do not remember my classes removing religious aspects from the curriculum. Is this prevalent nowadays?
  •
I am on the fence with this topic. I think that all Americans should have the right to pray in school but on the other hand I feel that it may be disrespectful to the third party. This is a tough topic for all people weather they are religious or not.
  •
America is the land of opportunity and freedom. We have the freedom to follow any religion. I think that banning prayer in schools is something that takes away from that right. If it's pray is part of the religion, why is it frowned upon and seen as disrespectful? Our country should respect and go for what it stands for.

Lawmakers in Ten States Have Proposed Legislation Criminalizing Peaceful Protest - 3 views

  •
The right to protest has been a major point of freedom for the US. It's a fundamental right written in the constitution. Now lawmakers are trying to take away that freedom by making it illegal to protest.
  • ...1 more comment...

I hope more citizens read this article and understand its implications. The core of our rights are being challenged. Without our citizens ability to organize and speak out against policies the our legislators enact we are heading into a direction of totalitarianism. We the people hold the power. Vote.
  •
The real problem is the groups that are vandalizing and rioting, and then claiming it is their right. Because of these people, these states are trying to do something that should never even be a thought. Basic human rights shall never be taken by Americans as long as we don't allow it. @albertskarsten you are absolutely right " We the people hold the power"
  •
The right to peaceful protest should never be taken from the American people. I do not condone the violence and rioting that occurs, and laws pertaining to that are pertinent, but not peaceful protest. So many things have been accomplished because of these types of protests in our history. As a woman I would not be participating in this class if it weren't for the people brave enough to protest for equality. It is a travesty that government officials, who should know and understand the rights given to the us in the Constitution, would bring about legislation to override said rights.

Supreme Court Must Protect The Individual Right To Marry, Not Limit Individual Rights - 0 views

  •
Applied to marriage, assuming what's not true, that marriage between two men offends me, it's not the government's role on any level to protect me from being offended. Whatever one thinks of marriage between two men or two women, the argument that such a union negatively impacts those who aren't gay, or those who blanch at marriage between gay people is not compelling. Here's hoping we don't stop at marriage in expanding individual rights, rights that are natural, and that should exist free of political or voter influence.

Lesbian and Gay Rights 101 - 1 views

  •
This website looks at gay rights to adopt. Because adoption is such a large topic, I think this is unique since it looks at gay and lesbian rights. The site outlines the issue and discusses each side.
  •
Not all states give homosexual couples the same adoption rights as heterosexual couples. There is no statistical data or research to show why gay parents would be any different than straight parents.
  •
Part 2: Search engine used: http://www.metacrawler.com/ URL: http://civilliberty.about.com/od/gendersexuality/ig/Lesbian-and-Gay-Rights-101/Gay-Adoption-Rights.htm Original: 1. "A child is better off with one father and one mother." Even if this claim were true (and there's no evidence that it is), it would be irrelevant. States allow adoption by individuals, and not just by married couples, precisely because they recognize that any healthy, stable family environment is a better option than the foster care system. Paraphrase: "A child is better off with one mom and one dad." There is no evidence that this statement is true, however providing evidence would not make it any more relevant. States not only allow married couples to adopt, but single parents too. This has something to do with recognizing that any environment that is healthy and stable is a more realistic option than foster care.
