Study Finds Majority of Kids Lagging in Cognitive Skills By 3rd Grade - 1 views

  •
A recent report released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation suggests that only about one-third of children in grade school meet expectations in cognitive ability by 3rd grade. Additionally, children from low-income families were much less likely to be on track in areas such as physical development, social/emotional growth, and school engagement. The report noted a distinct relation between family education and earnings. According to the data collected from families of children under the age of 8, half of the families who earned a higher income had a head of household with at least a 4-year college degree. In contrast, the head of household in the majority of low-income families had at best a high school diploma.

This is such a shame, and I am sure this is very frustrating for both parents and teachers. I really enjoyed helping in my daughters' classes but did see firsthand students who were struggling. Funding for education is not where it should be so classes don't have aides and assistants to spend extra time working with kids who need additional help.

Why 16-week paid parental leave policies are revolutionary for U.S. workers - 0 views

  •
There is not a lot of confirmation as to what dads worldwide believe about taking leave, but income is a major factor. Fathers staying home with their child instead of being at work can become an issue when it comes to low salary families. Although, California created a paid parental leave insurance program that became a huge success. Having this opportunity made both, mothers and fathers, take advantage of the paid leave to be home raising and nurturing their new child. The biggest shock was that most of the people who took the paid leave were the parents who were on the lower income scale.

Healthcare barriers are a concern in today's world, with pharma gaining ever more power within the government. Healthcare prices are skyrocketing, creating an economic barrier. I learned from this article that physicians could refuse to help patients using Medicaid just because of the lower rate. The goal of Medicaid is to ensure that low-income people can receive healthcare. Physicians should not refuse healthcare to the Medicaid population based on the rate of cost.
