Social Media and Adolescents' and Young Adults' Mental Health | National Center for Hea... - 4 views

  •
With mental health issues becoming more prevalent in today's society. One has to wonder if it might be linked to the ever growing social media world we live in. With many studies speculating that social media might be the driving force behind our mental health pandemic.

I personally do think that social media does play a roll in today's mental health pandemic, whether the impact is big or small. Mental health is something I believe to be very important & I wish everyone took it more seriously.
  •
I agree with Ash. As a race, humans tend to emulate and learn from each other, and has been proven by examining cultures and societies. With social media, anybody can "learn" behaviors, thoughts, or even actions from anybody. With this in mind, what do you think will happen to future generations on social media if they were, for example, consistently exposed (and as a result desensitized) to something like violence?
  •
This is a great topic and a great find, social media has been directly linked to depression.
  •
Sadly this world has truly become run by social media and the input of people we have never, and will never, meet. The importance a "like" or "comment" has now definitely leads to declining mental health statuses. Some people are so based on the likes that their entire world would crumble. Companies pay people purely based on their likes and follower count and the power they hold over their viewers.
  •
Mental health is a really big deal, especially nowadays. Our predecessors commonly pushed down or ignored their mental health issues, but it's even worse for people today due to social media and other platforms. People today are becoming more mindful of social issues such as mental health and I think that's a really big deal.
  •
I also think social media plays a big part in mental health issues in todays society.
  •
For 3 or more hours day over 40% of girls and 20% of boys. The socials that are popular would be twitter, snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook.
  •
I believe there might be a link between mental health problems and social media especially the impact it has on some peoples lives
  •
Social media has really impacted adolescents and young adults in many ways. Mental health problems have sprung because of social media. Social media has its positives but it has made a lot of people see themselves in a bad light and view themselves as imperfect when in real life they are perfect.
  •
this article is an interesting one to say the least. may people are affected by social media but young adults are the most affected. this article shows how young minds are most affected by these media outlets.
  •
I would definitely agree with the article as it claims the correlation between time spent on social media and the symptoms of anxiety and depression. I likes how they referenced how abstaining from it can result in higher levels of happiness.

Many social media users experience cyber-bullying. It's sad to say that it's a common and fairly easy thing to do and there should be more movements to stop it, but when there's people like celebrities doing it, who have millions of followers, there isn't an initiative or example to follow that promotes the cessation of cyber-bullying.
  •
Cyber-bullying is definitely an issue that needs to be discussed. Many online platforms don't adequately deal with bullying. Bullying can also lead to suicide. An example of this I believe is the suicide trend seen on some social media sites where teenagers primarily spend their time on such as Tumblr.
  •
I was glad to see a topic on cyber bulling it is a huge issue due to the fact that we are always on electronic divides. I recently just watched a movie on the subject the other night on Netflix. In the movie the young girl told both her parents and the school that she was being harassed and the school did nothing to help. The young girl ended up committing suicide.
  •
I think that cyber bullying is certainly a big issue. A lot of people may not even know that they are cyber bullying. You can see all over the internet people making fun of other people, even if it seems harmless. Some people don't realize that this can affect someone tremendously. They don't think about what they are putting online before they post it.
  •
People are too afraid too confront others, so they go online and make fun of them instead. When we are behind our phones or computers we feel a lot more comfortable and don't think much about it. Cyber bullying is wrong and hurts others emotionally.
  •
I am also glad that this was an article posted. This is such a growing issue, and has been for sometime. It's extremely unfortunate that school are part of this, and when these children go home they can't find solace because of the internet and all the social apps created.

The Role that Residential Schools Play in the Socialization of Deaf Children - 1 views

  • A residential school for students who are deaf has a comprehensive academic, health, and socialization program including dormitory living equipped for students who are deaf.
  • many view residential life as the ideal opportunity for students who are deaf to become familiar with and enculturated into the Deaf community.
  • because the language of the Deaf community, American Sign Language (ASL), is used

  • communication is not a barrier to social life
  • opportunity for socialization
  • This heritage is passed on from one generation to the next via the residential school,
  • Most schools for the deaf use some form of sign language (Padden & Humphries, 1988).
  • 78 residential schools for the deaf or deaf and blind in the United States
  • Parent/Infant program administered by the school provides much needed services until the child is ready to attend
  • child has access to role models who are Deaf.
  • Hearing parents of children who are deaf seem to have greater reluctance about sending their children because they do not want to be separated from them (Scheetz, 1993).
  • Parents who are Deaf themselves often choose a school for the Deaf over local schools because of the opportunity for their child(ren) to participate in the life of the Deaf community and culture
  • Students who are deaf and who attended mainstream schools must continue to prove their allegiance to the Deaf culture if they have chosen participation in adulthood (Reese, 1996).
  • Deaf students who are mainstreamed miss out on the feeling of belonging that individuals from the Deaf culture associate with their residential schools,
  • Mainstreamed students often are singled out in many respects.
  • The students are exposed to deaf adults with various types of careers
  • The residential school is the point of contact for the Deaf culture

  • Many students who have attended residential schools and who are members of the Deaf culture will admit to some regret over missing out on a closely knit family life

the author is biased in their writing and offers a biased perspective of this
  • the curriculum of the typical residential school tends to be less rigorous than that of other schools (Lane, Hoffmeister, & Bahan, 1996).
  • parents tend not to participate in their child's education to a sufficient degree
  •
The author reviews the purpose of Residential Schools for the Deaf and how they influence the social life and wellbeing of the children who are sent there for the better. The article shows a bias leaning towards the schools although there are many hearing families who find themselves troubled by the idea of sending their Deaf children away from K-12 but the article brings forward the positive aspects of how a residential school is uniquely capable of helping deaf children develop confidence and capable social skills that would allow them to experience a proper education unlike a mainstream public school in which they would most definitely be out-casted by their lack of resources, culture, language, and role models. It shows both the pros and cons of the residential schools for the Deaf in America but with a clear bias, however this is not unreasonable. Despite the clear bias towards residential schools from the author the article offers a point of view of hearing parents finding issue with sending their child away from home for long periods of time as they would experience with a residential school.

Social Media Privacy Issues for 2020: Threats & Risks - 3 views

  •
Social media is innately powerful in the hands of people. People with social media accounts get access to information from people around the world. In addition, they often get first-hand accounts of events that others observe and share on their "story." Social media comes with a price. As people get more information from other people, their lives become less private. Leaked information leads to unwanted information attacks that most people decry and blame on social media. I see these platforms as a trade agreement. While you get more information and freedom online, others get more information about you. So the foremost question here is, is the loss of privacy worth the instantaneous flow of information?
  •
I especially like this article because this is a very current issue that needs to be addressed. The question you ended with is a really good one, I do not think it's worth exposing private information just for instant gratification of scrolling through social media for a few minutes. This is a great topic to expand on.
  •
nowadays everyone has access to social media it's true how social media can give people power of what they post or its a risk also people can also personal information just my hacking or simply looking up
