If I could only pack three tools in my eToolbox… [this is like the game "If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring three things," except there is no island. Bear with me.]… I would choose Twitter, Evernote and Dropbox.

The value of Twitter for helping you and your colleagues stay informed of the latest trends, ideas, resources, and Web 2.0 integration tools has increased tremendously in the past year. A Web 2.0 tool is available for exploiting the every growing information on Twitter to remove barriers and allow you to collaborate with other science and math teachers. I have been an advocate for using ePortfolios for authentic assessment for quite some time. While I have made several attempts to help teachers learn to design and mange ePortfolios using a variety of digital tools to accomplish the task, I've discovered that teachers don't always have the time or patience to see it through. I've come to the conclusion that if we are going to use ePortfolios as a standard assessment tool, the teacher buy-in needs to begin with a tool that is easy to use. Asked to assess their students' performance on nine specific writing skills, teachers tended to rate their students "good" or "fair" as opposed to "excellent" or "very good." Students received the best ratings on their ability to "effectively organize and structure writing assignments" and their ability to "understand and consider multiple viewpoints on a particular topic or issue." Teachers gave students the lowest ratings when it comes to "navigating issues of fair use and copyright in composition" and "reading and digesting long or complicated texts."

This book was designed to help language teachers access the potential of new video-based technologies for the purpose of language learning. The book covers a wide range of theoretical aspects but the main focus is on the practicalities of how to use various web-based and mobile applications to create motivating and engaging learning opportunities. The book contains more than 40 step-by-step lesson plans that guide the teacher through classroom and online activities. There are also 26 video tutorials to help teachers with the technical aspects of understanding the technology.
