Some years ago I taught a life skills class to a group of eighth grade boys. The curriculum I offered wasn't working. They were disengaged -- they wouldn't read, write, or talk about what I wanted them to talk about -- and they were mounting a rebellion.

Wow... a must read. When technology is used in powerful ways to make learning and thinking about the world relevant, great things happen!

My guess is that Asimov would have said similar things about the Internet if he were still alive.

I believe that Napster gave us a glimpse of the future. The architecture it pioneered is going to be a viable model for the agile value constellations of the very near future. Client-server is not the only truth and Facebook is (just) a modern version of a Telco. Facebook is not the same as the Internet.

The thing that worries most non-specialists teaching language is pronouncing words correctly from a book. This is where Forvo is is priceless. Native speaker users and the site itself have uploaded audio clips of word for us non native speakers to copy. The site has 250+ languages uploaded. Is a lack of PD a barrier? Professional development is a barrier, although I think they can teach themselves much of what teachers need to be learning to be able to modernise their classrooms. The worst thing a teacher can say is: "who's going to teach me how to do that?" Teachers are teachers and should be able to teach themselves what they need to know. If they can't then they probably shouldn't be teaching. You want a teacher who can keep up. There are networks of other educators out there that can connect you with new skills. Professional development doesn't have to be something that is done to teachers - it can be just ongoing conversations they're having with other professionals that they're learning from every day.

The things I particularly like here are real-time, how Google Wave makes collaborate note-taking much more effective for learners and how collaborators/students can be tracked (play-back ability).

Real-time collaboration in Google Wave, play-back ability (teacher/instructor can see who did what) and students have actually said that their collaboratge note-taking was "more complete".

"I'm interested (read desperate) to see the revolutionary value adding aspects. I have an IWB, I love using my IWB, but I need to grasp the ideas and strategies that move people to describe it as a 'revolution' in learning. Show me an idea that is actually new!!!"

If she knew 2.1C, this could have been avoided! It is amazing how this type of thing still happens in our society when there is a simple and uniform understanding of how to proactively avoid it. Learning 2.1C the hard way usually means a life altering mistake has been made. If you do not know what 2.1C is, or how to practice it, you should learn ASAP!
