For those that don't work with an LMS, Engrade looks like a fine tool for educators.  It integrates some interesting power tools. Discussions, wikis, quizzes, messaging.  This might be an LMS substitute for those teachers looking for a free blended tech solution.  Worth investigating!

Rather worrying this: someone has developed and is selling an iPhone app that allows you take up to 4 photos whilst looking as though you're speaking on the phone or checking your messages. This makes for a good discussion topic concerning ethics and data protection.

This is good, and all very well, but... A few weeks ago I met a young lad, still at school, smartly dressed in a business suit, making a reasonable job of selling himself. Except that for reasons best known to himself he deemed it acceptable to not only chew gum the entire time, but to do so in a way that allowed me to see the contents of his mouth throughout. I realiuse this is off-message, as it were, but surely one of the most basic skills we should be teaching young people, by example as much as anything, is how to present yourself?

The type of learning that we all want... Do we all have the will and the courage to make it happen? Listen to Kevin's message and re-imagine what school/learning can be.

Just watched the entire Keynote! Have exactly the same start of conference buzz that I'd usually be feeling, without the out of pocket expense! Awesome. I hadn't had the chance to hear him present - love his original use of phrases and stories. You can tell he's a writer... has that gift with words. Some of my favourites - "she had never seen me before - not as a learner" "have you ever seen a kid launch" and "most kids are not braver than blisters. Are there cognitive blisters?" Thanks Steve for sharing - just what I needed before the start of a new week - I'm fired up and ready to go! :-)

Should we pay schools to go to school? Should we pay them for getting good grades? Don't we send a wrong message if we don't - since work is all about getting compensated?

They tried this in Chicago a while back and it didn't have any long-term results, just an initial bump. I'm personally not against it, but I don't know if it will successful.

What are the messages we need to send our students about science and what role have schools played in creating the current climate? Now seems like the time to pause and reflect on the place of science in our community and our schools.
