SOPA Vote Delayed, Allowing For More Corporate Fundraising From Censorship Bill - 3 views

  • SOPA is being aggressively pushed by Hollywood movie studios, major record labels and luxury goods providers as an effort to crackdown on internet piracy of their products. But the tools envisioned are so extreme that tech experts warn the legislation threatens the very functionality of the Internet. The ACLU and other free-speech groups emphasize that by authorizing the federal government and corporations to shut down entire websites without a trial for posting just a single piece of copyright-infringing content, the bill would sharply curb the exercise of free speech online.
  • It's a legislative strategy that members of Congress are all too willing to accept. With huge corporations on both sides of the bill, lawmakers will be able to request another round of campaign contributions, no matter what the legislation's ultimate fate may be.
  • Smith did not need to delay the vote in order to round up additional support to ensure passage. The House Judiciary Committee has close ties to Hollywood and is strongly supportive of the bill. Smith wrote the legislation, and over the past two days, the committee shot down amendments to weaken or moderate provisions of the legislation by wide margins.

Natalie Goldberg | Keep The Hand Moving - 11 views

  • I consider writing an athletic activity: the more you practice, the better you get at it. The reason you keep your hand moving is because there’s often a conflict between the editor and the creator. The editor is always on our shoulder saying, “Oh, you shouldn’t write that. It’s no good.” But when you have to keep the hand moving, it’s an opportunity for the creator to have a say. All the other rules of writing practice support that primary rule of keeping your hand moving. The goal is to allow the written word to connect with your original mind, to write down the first thought you flash on, before the second and third thoughts come in.
  • The idea is to keep your hand moving for, say, ten minutes, and don’t cross anything out, because that makes space for your inner editor to come in. You are free to write the worst junk in America.
  • A writing practice is simply picking up a pen — a fast-writing pen, preferably, since the mind is faster than the hand — and doing timed writing exercises.

  • . “You have to pick up a pen and write regularly for specific periods of time,” she instructs, and put into words what you most need to say. The product, Goldberg contends, is not as important as the process. Ultimately, she says, writing is “a way to help you penetrate your life and become sane.”

e-Learning Online: Website Investigator: See you at NECC 2009! - 0 views

  • Website Investigator: Information Forensics Goes to School
  • The purpose of this session is to provide participants with an understanding of efficient methods for evaluating online information and to demonstrate effective ways to teach these information fluency skills in classrooms. The new generation of NETS standards for students (ISTE, 2007), is based on the premise that efficacy and productivity depends on students’ abilities to conduct research and manage digital information fluently. An essential skill is the ability to evaluate information from a variety of sources and media. This session directly addresses this information fluency standard by helping participants…1. Understand the role of investigation (information forensics) in evaluating information:• Two types of searching: how investigation differs from speculation;• Determining when investigative searching is necessary and when it is not;• Effective means of finding critical information with limited clues;• Using specialized search engines and browsing techniques to track down information;• Analyzing results to determine credibility of the source and content.2. Observe effective methods for helping students exercise speculative search skills:• Off-line 'readiness' activities;• Group and individual Search Challenges;• Interactive tutorial games;• Think-aloud searches;• Evaluation reporting;• Group discussion about credibility.

Michael Geist - Pulling a Fast One?: Who Is Really Hurt By C-32's Missing Fair Dealing ... - 6 views

  • linking copyright infringement to circumvention is compliant with the WIPO Internet treaties, it is an approach that has been adopted by other countries, and it is one that has been promoted by many groups supportive of copyright reform
  • several countries have proposed or passed legislation that explicitly links circumvention with copyright infringement, including New Zealand, Switzerland, Canada (Bill C-60), India, and Brazil.
  • Italy permits circumvention for private copying, Greece established a legal right to pursue access, and the Netherlands grants the Justice Department the power to decree access
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • Bill C-32 currently includes circumvention exceptions for several purposes including privacy, security research, and encryption. Adding fair dealing means adding five categories of new exceptions -  research, private study, news reporting, criticism, and review.
  • The second group of circumventers consists of those Canadians who believe that circumvention is a reasonable exercise of their consumer rights. These include Canadians who unlock their cellphones or format shift a DVD.
  • Consumers unlock their phones because they believe it is their property and they should be entitled to do so (the government agrees as there is an exception for this in C-32).
  • They similarly format shift DVDs because they reasonably believe that purchasing a DVD should entitle them to watch the DVD on the device of their choice
  • the sale of the products is often based on the presumption that the consumer will have the ability to unlock, make a backup, or format shift
  • If the law does not include a fair dealing circumvention exception, teachers will follow guidelines that prohibit circumvention as part of the educational process and students will be stopped from creating mashups or engaging with digital materials in certain ways.
