Should Professors Allow Students to Use Computer Devices in the Classroom? | HASTAC - 25 views

  • One final comment, a funny one.  On Monday, in my "Twenty-First Century Literacies" class where laptops are required for a whole range of experiments and inclass collaborative work, I caught one of my students with his laptop open and with a book propped secretly inside it, reading away in his book when he should have been paying attention.   So maybe that's the next class, "Should Professors Allow Students to Use BOOKS in the Classroom Devised for Computer Learning?"   I'm being facetious but that's the point.  A book is a technology too.   How and when we use any technology and for what purpose are the questions we all need to ask.
  • Do you see the difference?   "Computer learning" doesn't exist.   In 2011, it exists less than it did a decade ago and, in a few years, that phrase won't exist at all.   Students learn.  Computers are tools for all kinds of things, from checking the Facebook page, to making notetaking easier, to being fact checking or calculating devices that can take a class to a more sophisticated level to interactive social networking devices that can either distract a class or allow for new forms of group collaboration.   There are many other uses as well.   The point is that most profs have (a) simply "adapted" (as a colleague told me recently) to computers without understanding the intellectual and pedagogical changes they can enable; or (b) resigned themselves to their present, gleefully or resentflly; or (c) made them into a pedagogical tool; or (d) all of the above.
  • The point isn't that the class has to be designed for "computer learning" but that there are different forms of learning available with a device and profs should be allowed to determine if they want to facilitate and make use of those different forms of learning or not.

Great post by Cathy Davidson. Her final facetious question of we will ban books because they can distract students makes a nice point.

Musical sensibility can help shape teaching, research education - 10 views

  • Liora Bresler, a professor of curriculum and instruction in the U. of I. College of Education, says that the inherently performative and improvisatory aspects of teaching, along with the temporal, polyphonic aspects of scholarly research, compares favorably with musicianship.
  • "When you teach, you have a lesson plan, but you're not bound to follow it. You play, follow up, improvise and adapt, as the situation dictates. It's intellectual engagement, and you want to be engaging. So having a real, live audience makes a difference." Bresler said that the commitment to a third-party audience helps the teacher "see, perceive and make sense of what they're trying to communicate on a very different level."
  • Teachers have to act in real-time, in the moment, and have to make a lot of decisions on-the-fly.

Technology Integration Matrix - 97 views

"The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. The TIM incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (i.e., reflective), authentic, and collaborative (Jonassen, Howland, Moore, & Marra, 2003). The TIM associates five levels of technology integration (i.e., entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion, and transformation) with each of the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments. Together, the five levels of technology integration and the five characteristics of meaningful learning environments create a matrix of 25 cells "

adeno associated virus packaging - 0 views

  •
Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV package) belongs to the family of parvovirus and is a non-enveloped single-stranded DNA virus, with a genome size of 4.7 kb composed of two open reading frames (ORFs) flanked by inverted terminal repeat sequences (ITRs) of 145 nucleotides each. AAV vectors are one of the most commonly used vectors for a variety of gene therapy applications and have been widely used in clinics and basic research mainly owing to their capable of transducing a wide range of species and tissues in vivo with no evidence of toxicity, and it generates relatively mild innate and adaptive immune responses as well as their long-term transgene expression and steady physical properties.

autophagy reagents - 0 views

  •
Autophagy refers to the process by which non-essential or dysfunctional cellular components are degraded by lysosomes into essential nutrients, such as amino acids, lipids, and sugars. Autophagy serves not only as a specialized mechanism for cells to adapt to extreme environments but also as a crucial regulatory mechanism for normal cellular activities. Abnormal autophagy often plays a significant role in cell damage and aging. Currently, autophagy is known to be involved in various vital biological processes including tumor development, aging, inflammation, immune response, cardio-cerebral vascular diseases, oxidative stress, neurodegenerative diseases, metabolism, and development.

intake valve air compressor - 1 views

  •
Common air compressor intake valve is usually butterfly type, mainly through the control of the disc in the intake valve compressor to open and close the load control. The intake control valve is generally divided into two control methods, one is switch type, when the pressure value of the intake valve air compressor reaches the set height value, the intake valve will be started to close the intake port, and the pressure will be reduced to the set pressure value. The other control method is capacitive control, and the disc of the compressor inlet valve will be micro-closed to control, adapt to the external gas consumption, and make the pressure stable within a certain value. To protect the whole machine in turn.
