edbuzz.org » Revenge of the Edupunks - 20 views

  • The education futurists see the development of Web 2.0 as the final death knell of the 20th century learning model. The proliferation of open source learning tools, social media technology, mobile learning tools, and the ability of educators to cheaply and effectively construct rich, complex, individualized learning experiences for students is bound to revolutionize education.
  • In some ways, integrating technology with high school and college curriculum may seem like a simple task, but any experienced educator will tell you it’s definitely not. Shifting from a classroom mindset to an online mindset not only presents significant practical problems, but the transformation can be very difficult for teachers to conceptualize.
  • Although the potential benefits online learning presents are exciting, shifting the way educators think about teaching and learning is definitely not an easy task. Nevertheless, the more students and their parents demand highly individualized and inexpensive curriculum, educators will be forced to change the way they deliver instruction. The market forces that are shaping today’s schools will, at the most fundamental level, disrupt the current educational model. The problem we face as educators is deciding which tools we should use and the best ways to use them. Finding a solution to this problems might require the sort of radical thinking the edupunks like to embrace.

GCPD on the Air: PLN 101 - 0 views

I wanted to share this link to my new podcast which will feature "podcourses" for professional development purposes. I have just published the first course: PLN 101. It features a series of podcasts and activities designed to take a teacher from knowing absolutely nothing about a PLN, to having a PLN with at least 5 tools. It also contains tips for managing a PLN. Although it was designed with beginners in mind, it may also be a useful resource for those charged with helping teachers develop their PLNs. The podcourse can be accessed online or via a handheld device at www.missgreer.podbean/mobile. I hope you will pass this along and check it out! Please feel free to use it with your staff or to share it with colleagues. I'd love feedback. The next podcourse I'm planning is "20 Days of 2.0" which will feature a short podcast featuring a different 2.0 tool over the course of 20 days. I hope to publish it starting in November. If you'd like a heads up when it comes out, be sure to subscribe. Thanks!

Master of Our Online Universe: Progression to Web 3.0 | cyberCulture - 0 views

  • In my opinion, Web 2.0 started with the introduction of the Social Networking Site (SNS) to the Web.
  • We can look back to 2002 and the launch of Friendster to see Web 2.0 in its infancy.
  • “Friendster was the first explicit social networking site in terms of the way we think about it today.”
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • With the introduction of Friendster the user can now create a digital persona without having any programming knowledge.
  • First was MySpace, which gave users access to their profiles HTML and CSS.
  • This feature to the SNS provided the user the ability to personalize their digital persona, and allowed them to express their individuality.
  • The next step in user control was given by Facebook, when the site allowed users develop and incorporate widgets into their profiles. The SNS Ning goes one step further by combining both the ideas of MySpace and Facebook, Ashlock says, “Giving users the power to construct an authentic identity while providing access to a rich array of Web 2.0 content.”
  • It is my conclusion that it is this focus on fluidly intertwining the Internet with the daily lives of its users that will progress Web 2.0 to Web 3.0. Just take a look at the latest advancements in mobile technology and you will see that the user’s ability to be connected has progressed away from the desktop computer.

Internet Evolution - Rob Salkowitz - Schoolkid Laptops: How Portugal's Doing It Right - 0 views

  • In June, Portugal completed the major phase of the largest deployment of laptops for education in the world to date, equipping nearly a million secondary school students throughout the entire country with high-performance computers and mobile Internet connectivity.
  • The government authorized the use of the 3G auction proceeds to subsidize the distribution of nearly a million laptops before the end of the decade. This pleased the telecom providers, because it amounted to a direct investment in market development: All those students and their families would become mobile broadband customers.
  • it instantly leapfrogged the country’s education system to the forefront of the global effort to integrate the Internet into the classroom, and it promised a quantum leap forward for the country’s next generation of citizens, workers, and leaders.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • With the subsidies, the end-cost to students’ families is only €50 to €150 for laptops that would otherwise sell for more than four times that amount. Qualified low-income families receive theirs for free. The Escola computers come with a one-year mobile broadband contract for €17 a month (discounted from the normal €23), and other plans are negotiable depending on the providers.
  • “It is most important to have scale,” says Grilo. “It can’t be just a pilot project confined to a small community. It must be everyone at once. That way, you have maximum cultural impact. Everyone feels part of the mainstream, not an anomaly or a test subject.”
  • Perhaps the most important lesson for countries seeking to emulate Portugal’s success is to design a policy that aligns the interests of all the major stakeholders: telecom providers, local OEMs, multinational partners, government ministries, local communities, schools, and the public.
