Blood gas measurements are as important for ill newborn infants as for other critically ill patients, but unique challenges are provided by rapidly changing physiology, difficult access to arterial and mixed venous sampling sites, and small blood volumes.

Pub Med Article Abstract presents a short clinical review of metabolic diseases associated with metabolic acidosis in the newborn and discusses appropriate investigations and differential diagnoses. It is important to remember the possibility of metabolic diseases as the cause of metabolic acidosis in the newborn period.

Conclusions: For children with disabilities, physical impairment may play a greater role than cognitive impairment in managing risk for injury at school. Individual education programs (IEP), developed for children in special education, could be tailored to include injury prevention strategies.

Effect of treatment on the movement disorder will be measured by a myoclonus scale and a dystonia scale as well as by assessment of overall functional status. Response at various dosages will be compared to baseline for all patients.Safety parameters including neurological examination, blood tests and EKG will be monitored throughout the treatment period and during withdrawal of the medication.
