The why and how of using digital stories in language ed

Digital storytelling is so awesome! I got a chance to create a digital story through the Minnesota Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute and it was an awesome experience. I'd highly recommend looking into your local branch of the National Writing Project to see what resources or professional development are available.

Definitely one of my passions as a teacher- helping students get to the point where they can tell their own stories.

FlipGrid tutorial that helped to walk me through setting up different topics for students to participate in.

I so needed this!

It seems somewhat self-explanatory, but by watching the tutorial I came up with a few ideas that would not have otherwise come up. Among them, I can use FG as a scaffolding activity to match student progress over the course of a quarter or semester. It offers a few features that could appropriately match this growth-- I can write a prompt with an image, video, video + link. Anyway, I can see now more clearly how to FG can be a great resource for my classroom.

Did you get to try it out at all? What do you think? I haven't seen this used in the FL setting before.

A great way to provide students with the opportunity to be creative.

Since others posted tutorials, I chose an article from a teacher who shares its value.

I really like this instructor's take on communication in the classroom, and how to use FlipGrid to foster it.

I loved the story of Connie who was nervous to speak in class but felt comfortable and excelled in flipgrid! Her picture was Sully from Monsters inc which gave me the idea of having students use dolls or stuffed animals to present stories on flip grid in the voice of that character.

This list is amazing. It has even a list of apps and pages that work very well with Facebook.

This is a great list! I never used facebook for teaching but I learned many facebook apps for instructional purpose! Thank you for posting!

thanks for sharing Roxana. I really like how this blog discusses the language and cultural uses of using voicethread to create learning communities. It provided me many practical examples I can use in my classroom to help students focus on langauge development while using the technology. This post puts the focus on learning not on the technology. The handouts are great supports that help students stay on the learning track and because of this, the coummunity of learning is built. I was a little concerned by the deficit language used on the scoring rubric for asynchronous content. I will probably use something similar by change the wording to be a little more constructive, as meaning can be lost online and harsh wording can be misinterpreted.

Here's a video version of many articles out there describing possible synchronous activities.  I enjoy how she shows you the different platforms.
