4.G.2 "Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles." This activity can be modified for ELL students, gifted students, etc. by using fewer shapes, as well as shapes that are easier to identify. In the other sense, it can be modified to include more shapes that are more difficult to identify. This activity could also be used in other subject areas, such as science. It could be used to identify different classifications of plants and animals. It could also be used in foreign language. The students could read a vocabulary word in the foreign language, and then have to say the correct vocabulary work in English.
  •
Children make a game board displaying different shapes they should know (polygon, quadrilateral, parallelogram, etc.). Each child roles the die and moves that number of spaces. If that player can correctly identify the shape in their space, they roll again. The first one to the end and back wins!

4.OA.4 "Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100. Recognize that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is a multiple of a given one-digit number. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is prime or composite." This activity could be used for gifted students by providing a bigger number chart. It could also be used for ELL students by providing a smaller number chart (ex: a 50 chart). This activity could be used for younger ages by having the students identify different types of numbers. For example, the students could be searching for even numbers or odd numbers, rather than prime or composite numbers.
  •
Students work in pairs for this game. Each pair has a printed 100 chart. The students designate one color marker for the prime numbers, and another color marker for the composite numbers. Students take turns crossing out a composite number (1 point), circling a prime number (3 points), or passing. The player with the most points when all of the numbers are found, wins!

Battle It Out: Positive and Negative Numbers Card Game | Education.com - 1 views

    • Ashley Stewart

4.NBT.2 "Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons." This activity can be adjusted for ELL students by using a smaller deck of cards. The game can first be mastered by using only the black cards (positive numbers). Once the student(s) is comfortable with the concept of the game with the positive numbers, the negative numbers (red cards) can be introduced. This activity can be used for younger ages by working with only the black cards, and modeling proper mathematical words, such as "greater than" and "less than".
  •
Students work in pairs, battling against one another for this card game. Each person turns over one card at a time. Red cards represent negative numbers, and black cards represent positive numbers. The person with the highest valued card is the winner for that round. The student that accumulates the most cards (when each player is out of cards) is the winner!

Nuts and Bolts: A Sorting Activity - 1 views

  • Does Dad’s tool box need to be tidied up? Get your child to help you clean, while sneaking in a little math along the way. Sorting objects by size, color, shape, or function is an important concept in mathematical reasoning, and it’s the perfect excuse for a little housekeeping!
    • Mary Jo Mack

This activity can be used as a language development activity for ELL students. You can ask them to describe the shapes and colors of the nuts and bolts. ELL students can use their visual strengths to excel in sorting activities such as this one.
    • Mary Jo Mack

This would be a great activity for math tubs. Make sure not to include anything that could be sharp or a danger to a 5 or 6 year old student!

Take a Shape Safari! | Education.com - 1 views

  • Forget a jeep in Africa. You can head out for a safari right in your own neighborhood. Instead of hunting lions and tigers, you'll troll for circles and triangles. Why? Because shapes are at the heart of the first grade math and writing curriculum.
    • Susan Shonle

Extension: This activity can connect math with social studies - use fabrics or objects from another culture. Adaptations: Gifted students can help Special Ed students by exploring together in small groups. EL students benefit from direct observation for context of objects.

Fractions in Between | Education.com - 2 views

  • Understanding fractions can be tough! Try using a deck of playing cards to formulate fractions. In this activity, you will randomly deal cards onto a game board, representing three different fractions. Work together to evaluate whether or not those fractions are in order from greatest to least. Use a calculator to help you solve, and come to a better understanding about the value of different fractions.
    • Susan Shonle

Extension: This activity can connect math with art if pictures, or number lines, or graphs are used with this activity to represent the fractions and number order. Adaptations: Manipulatives can be used for this activity. Gifted students can help peers with game. Special Ed  students can draw or graph the fractions if this helps them to better understand concepts.
    • Susan Shonle

Extensions:  Add graphing of fractions or drawing of fractions to help with understanding.  This would connect math with art. Adaptations: Add manipulatives if needed.  Gifted students could help peers in game.  Keep the denominators the same in fractions to help Special Ed students.  ELL students would benefit from pictures or graphing of fractions.

Repeat, then Eat!: A Patterning Game | Education.com - 1 views

  • This incredibly edible activity gives kindergartners the chance to practice identifying, copying, and extending basic patterns.
    • Susan Shonle

Patterning teaches kindergartners to look for what's the same and what's different, in addition to the order, or sequence, things occur. And when everything's edible, the learning feels like play!
    • Susan Shonle

Extension: This game can be used with A,B,C letters to learn the alphabet in addition to pattern recognition in mathematics. Adaptations: This activity can be modified to include pictures for ESL or Special Needs.

Lesson Plans: Expressing Money (Elementary, Mathematics) - 1 views

  • Materials Required: paper, pencials, Book: Alexander, Who USed to be rich last sunday Activity Time: 30 minutes Concepts Taught: expressing money in different ways
    • Susan Shonle

Adaptations: Gifted students can show the sum multiple ways (using different currency) or write the equation for the addition or subtraction problem. EL Students can draw a picture of the currency needed to represent the sum. Other manipulatives can be used with this activity with the amount written in cents or dollars on the manipulatives.
    • Susan Shonle

This activity can be used with other manipulatives that are labeled with the coin amounts. This activity connects math and LA. Adaptations include: require gifted students to show 3-5 ways to represent the sum using different currency or give the equation. EL students can draw a picture to represent the coins used.
  •
Expressing money in different ways - 2nd Grade (dollar, quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies) Materials: bags of play money that have an equal amount for each student, paper, and pencils for each student book: Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday Objective: after reviewing the names of coins and bills and how much they are worth, grade 2 students will listen to a book read to them by their teacher and express the amount of money stated with their manipulative of play money and show different ways to express that amount of money.  (i.e. 10=10=5=25)

Lesson Plans: Symmetry (all, Mathematics) - 1 views

    • Jean Guernsey

I like this symmetry lesson, especially the part when students will switch desks and do the other half of their neighbors design. This concept also leads well into Art (butterflies) and literature. This lesson could be for any grade just by changing the object they use for symmetry.

Lesson Plans: Clipping Coupons (Middle, Mathematics) - 2 views

    • Jean Guernsey

I really like the real world concept with this lesson. There might be multicultural considerations (like never seeing or using a coupon), might need to expand on definitions.
  • Adaptations:
  • The lesson can be adapted for by allowing the use of calculators if the idea that the prices are added and subtracted is the only concept that is being emphasized. • Prices and discounts could be pre-determined and filled-in on worksheets.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Multicultural considerations: • In some cultures it may not be acceptable for children to request items while shopping. This is an issue that must be kept in the mind of the teacher while teaching in order to detour any conversation which might offend a student who is not permitted to make requests while in the store. • Some students may come from homes where coupons have never been used. In this case it would be necessary to briefly expand upon the definition of a coupon.
