    A deck of playing cards will determine your ant's pace in this measurement game! Draw a card to see what number you will use. Measure that amount of centimeters on your game board. Try to reach all of the locations on your board before the other "ants," and you'll win! This game creates a fun way to practice measuring, and your little "ant" will enjoy trying to reach the finish line before you!

Problems could be made easier for students who need extra help, by having only two or three numbers on a card to add together. Instead of having only addition, the note cards could include subtraction, multiplication, and/or division.

This activity can be used with ELL students by having them simply count the spaces, rather than finding the matching number from the die. The gifted students can be given cards, rather than die, with simple math problems on them. The student would move their froggy to the number on the board that is the solution to their math problem. For example, if their card read "3 + 2", the child would move their froggy to the 5 space. This activity could be used with older grades by using the card concept, but using multiplication or division problems.

    Children use empty water bottles to "bowl" and practice their addition. Each bottle has a number written on it, and children add up the numbers on the bottles that are knocked over with each roll. The person with the most points wins!

For older ages, this activity could be used to measure objects, and then convert the weight into other units of measurement.

    Students group 100 small objects into groups of tens and estimate how much each group weighs, in ounces. The students place the bags of objects on the scale and record how much they weigh. Encourage the students to discuss their results and compare their estimations.

This activity can be adapted for ELL students by allowing those students to draw pictures of their design, rather than write a paragraph or make a chart. If the students are able, they can label the parts of their picture, using the English words they know. This activity can also be adjusted for younger grades by allowing them more than one science class time to work on the project. This may be an activity that can span a few days. The activity can then be broken down into sections. The students could use one class time to ask their questions within their group, and plan what they want their product to look like. The actual design and implementation of their product can be put into place on a separate class day.

      The Design Process: Identify a need or problem to be solved; brainstorm potential solutions; throughout the entire design process, document the design with drawings (including labels) in a portfolio or notebook so that the process can be replicated; select a solution to the need or problem; select the most appropriate materials to develop a solution that will meet the need; evaluate and test the design. This activity can be adapted for gifted students by allowing them to first draw a blueprint of their model. This will allow them to make predictions and hypothesis about their cube model and their tag board model. These students can then record their observations and their conclusions about their final product. This activity can also be adapted for younger grades by giving the students more materials to help them balance their models. Also, allowing the younger students to work in partners, rather than pairs, will allow them to more freely express their ideas. Working with a partner will give each student the opportunity to make sure their ideas are heard. For younger students, omitting the blueprint may also be helpful. Rather, having the students simply draw a picture of their model with labels may be more appropriate.

    Children use styrofoam cubes to design and construct an object that will balance on your finger. Also, another challenge can be given to the students after completing the first challenge. Students use tag board to design and construct a model figure that will balance on a high wire. Students should draw their own blueprint to illustrate what they did and what they discovered.

This activity can be used for older grades by having the students compare two different celery stalks - one with water, and one without water. The students can then make a table or chart to compare and contrast the two different celery stalks.

    Students observe a stalk of celery over one to two days. The celery is placed into water (food coloring is added to the water). The students then record their observations about the water moving up the celery stalk. This is a great way for students to understand how plants transport water from their roots to their leaves!

      It's fun to add the liquids out of order from densest to least dense and observe as they still seek their layer. I've done this with Karo syrup that I've added blue food coloring to, red water, and oil, but we add the water first, then the Karo syrup, and then the oil and the liquid seeks its layer. We extend this further by stirring the liquids too. Some of the layers separate out, but others remain mixed. It's a cool activity!

      Extension: After completing the experiment with oil and water, students could experiment with other liquids and make a hypothesis whether or not the density of the two liquids will be the same or different.

    In this activity students compare the mass and volume of different liguids by pouring the liquids into the same container and seeing which ones are "heavier" and "lighter."

    Density - or mass per volume - of a liquid is an important scientific concept that can be viewed with the naked eye. We see it all the time with oil and water. Oil has a different density than water so the two liquids do not mix. In this experiment your child will look at a number of liquids with different densities and compare them all to water. She'll build her science skills and learn one of the most fundamental scientific concepts she'll use for years to come.

      Nature of Science Standards: Plan and carry out investigations-often over a period of several lessons-as a class, in small groups or independently; use measurement skills and apply appropriate units when collecting data; keep accurate records in a notebook during investigations and communicate findings to others using graphs, charts, maps and models through oral and written reports. This activity can be adjusted for ELL students by giving them a picture chart on which to record their data. Rather than using all words on the chart, pictures of a cup, plate, cake pan, etc. can be place on the chart, and the students can fill in the results of the distance for each picture. This activity can also be used with younger age groups by having them use other objects, such as a small ping pong ball, to throw. A bigger object may be easier for younger children to throw.

    Students play a "tip toss" game, and try to determine the rule for the distance each player must stand from the tableware. To determine the distance, students will work together in groups and record their score from various distances. They will then graph or chart their data and determine the best distance to have players stand at during the game.

( I would group them and have each person write about their part of the demonstration and that it what they present) You can extend it you younger grades by having them draw the phases of the moon and with parents (as homework) go outside at night and dermine which phase the moon is in and drawing a picture of that phase on the claendar. 5.2.4 Use a calendar to record observations of the shape of the moon and the rising and setting times over the course of a month. Based on the observations, describe patterns in the moon cycle. 5.2.1 Recognize that our earth is part of the solar system in which the sun, an average star, is the central and largest body. Observe that our solar system includes the sun, moon, seven other planets and their moons, and many other smaller objects like asteroids and comets.

      ELL - English Language Learners could work with a partner to research the site, but the sifting and categorizing process is hands on, and doesn't require strong language skills.  By using pictorial examples for instructions, ELL students can be successful in this effort.

    This site doesn't provide specific activities; however, I would design earth science activities to assist kids in researching this park, and the surround area.  We would discuss how and why the area has these deposits, the history of the area, and how to go about finding diamonds and other cool rocks.   Extension activity:  Order bags of dirt from Crater of Diamonds park and have the kids sift through to find and identify various rocks and minerals.   Standards: 3.2.1:  Examine the physical properties of rock samples and sort them into categories based on size using simple tools such as sieves. 3.2.2:  Observe the detailed characteristics of rocks and minerals.  Identify rocks as being composed of different combinations of minerals. 3.2.3:  Classify and identify minerals by their physical properties of hardness, color, luster, and streak.

      The Challenger Center also offers Special Needs missions. Lessons are differentiated as students will be assigned to different roles.  This is a very "challenging" endeavor, and requires completion of lessons prior to the visit.

    Excellent activity for grades five and up.  "Students work as teams in mission control and aboard a spacecraft as they test their decision making skills and solve problems during this innovative, inquiry based, space-themed science and math simulation." This activity could meet MANY science standards and math standards including the Design Process, The Nature of Science, and Reading for Literacy in Science.  For the purpose of this assignment, I am assigning it to: 6.2.4  With regard to their size, composition, distance from the sun, surface features and ability to support life, compare and contrast the planets of the solar system with one another and with asteroids and comets.  6-8.RS.1:  Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science texts.   6-8 RS.3:  Follow precisely a multi-step procedure when carrying out experiments or taking measurements.

This activity could be used for gifted students by providing a bigger number chart. It could also be used for ELL students by providing a smaller number chart (ex: a 50 chart). This activity could be used for younger ages by having the students identify different types of numbers. For example, the students could be searching for even numbers or odd numbers, rather than prime or composite numbers.

    Students work in pairs for this game. Each pair has a printed 100 chart. The students designate one color marker for the prime numbers, and another color marker for the composite numbers. Students take turns crossing out a composite number (1 point), circling a prime number (3 points), or passing. The player with the most points when all of the numbers are found, wins!
