Diversity of Indian Barnacles in Marine Provinces and Ecoregions of the Indian Ocean - ... - 0 views

    The present study is the first completed and taxonomically validated literature review of the biodiversity of barnacles (Cirripedia) in India. A total of 144 species in 75 genera and 19 families have been recorded in India. The highest number of species has been recorded from the Bay of Bengal province, located on the eastern side of the Indian Peninsula, comprising the Eastern India ecoregion (76 species) and Northern Bay of Bengal ecoregion (34 species). The West and South India Shelf province has fewer species (Western India ecoregion: 29 species; South India and Sri Lanka ecoregion: 40 species; and Maldives ecoregion: 10 species) compared to the Bay of Bengal province. The Andaman province is composed of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and contains 65 species. Most of the coral-associated barnacles (family Pyrgomatidae) have been recorded in the corals reefs of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (7 species), Eastern India (6 species), and Northern Bay of Bengal ecoregions (5 species). Sponge-associated barnacles (mostly in the subfamily Acastinae) were recorded in the Eastern India ecoregion, Southern India and Sri Lanka, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands ecoregions. Deepwater species were recorded the most extensively in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands ecoregion (21 species), followed by the South India and Sri Lanka ecoregion (9 species) and Eastern India ecoregion (7 species). Six Atlantic/boreal cold water species previously reported in India were removed due to incorrect identification, and some incorrectly identified species were validated and corrected.

Benthic Foraminiferal Response to the Millennial-Scale Variations in Monsoon-Driven Pro... - 0 views

    In this study, we presented a high-resolution benthic foraminiferal assemblage record from the western Bay of Bengal (BoB) (off Krishna-Godavari Basin) showing millennial-scale variations during the last 45 ka. We studied temporal variations in benthic foraminiferal assemblages (relative abundances of ecologically sensitive groups/species, microhabitat categories, and morphogroups) to infer past changes in sea bottom environment and to understand how monsoon induced primary productivity-driven organic matter export flux and externally sourced deep-water masses impacted the deep-sea environment at the core site. Our records reveal a strong coupling between surface productivity and benthic environment on glacial/interglacial and millennial scale in concert with Northern Hemisphere climate events. Faunal data suggest a relatively oxic environment when the organic matter flux to the sea floor was low due to low primary production during intensified summer monsoon attributing surface water stratification and less nutrient availability in the mixed layer. Furthermore, records of oxygen-sensitive benthic taxa (low-oxygen vs. high-oxygen benthics) indicate that changes in deep-water circulation combined with the primary productivity-driven organic matter flux modulated the sea bottom oxygen condition over the last 45 ka. We suggest that the bottom water at the core site was well-ventilated during the Holocene (except for the period since 3 ka) compared with the late glacial period. At the millennial timescale, our faunal proxy records suggest relatively oxygen-poor condition at the sea floor during the intervals corresponding to the cold stadials and North Atlantic Heinrich events (H1, H2, H3, and H4) compared with the Dansgaard/Oeschger (D-O) warm interstadials.     Surface hydrology in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean significantly impacts low-latitude climate processes including the Indonesian-Australian Monsoon and the Indian Ocean Dipole. Deciphering the evolution of surface hydrology and driving mechanisms is thus important to better understand low-latitude and global climate change. Here, we present ~206 yr-resolved temperature and salinity records of surface waters spanning the past ~31 kyr, based on δ18O and Mg/Ca ratio of Globigerinoides ruber from Core SO18567 retrieved offshore northwestern Australia in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean. By integrating new records with published paleo-oceanographic and -climatological records, we found that increasing sea surface temperature and decreasing salinity in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean during the Heinrich stadial 1 and the Younger Dryas could be attributed to collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Melting of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets would have led to a southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and reduced transport of warm surface waters from the low latitudes to the Northern Hemisphere high latitudes. In addition, our results indicate that the onset of the last deglacial warming in low latitudes was linked to weakening of the Hadley circulation and AMOC due to warming of Northern Hemisphere high latitudes, rather than raised global atmospheric CO2 concentration.

    In 2011, several non-governmental and government agencies established the Kenya Marine Mammal Network (KMMN) to provide a platform for the consistent collection of data on marine mammals along the Kenyan coast, identify areas of importance and engage marine users and the general public in marine mammal conservation. Prior to the KMMN, relatively little was known about marine mammals in Kenya, limiting conservation strategies. The KMMN collects data nationwide through dedicated surveys, opportunistic sightings and participative citizen science, currently involving more than 100 contributors. This paper reviews data on sightings and strandings for small cetaceans in Kenya collated by the KMMN. From 2011 to 2019, 792 records of 11 species of small cetaceans were documented. The most frequently reported inshore species were the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin and Indian Ocean humpback dolphin. Offshore species, included killer whales, short-finned pilot whale and long-snouted spinner dolphin. Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, long-snouted spinner dolphins, striped dolphins and Risso's dolphins were recorded through stranding reports. The efforts of the KMMN were disseminated through international meetings (International Whaling Commission, World Marine Mammal Conference), national status reports, outreach and social media. Data has also supported the identification of three IUCN Important Marine Mammal Areas and one Area of Interest in Kenya. Further research is needed to improve estimates of cetacean abundance and distribution, particularly in unstudied coastal areas, and to assess the extent of anthropogenic threats associated with fisheries, coastal and port development, seismic exercises and unregulated tourism. The expansion of the network should benefit from the participation of remote coastal fishing communities, government research agencies, tourism and seismic operations, among others.     Coastal waters are dynamic because of anthropogenic activities that contribute nutrients and contaminants. These changes have the potential to alter patterns of primary production and thus pelagic food webs. Here, we investigated the spatial variation of the phytoplankton community and its response to changing environmental variables at 84 stations along the five coastal districts of Tamil Nadu (TN). During the present study, 85 phytoplankton species were recorded, such as diatoms (64), dinoflagellates (18), silicoflagellates (1), and Cyanophyceae (2). The maximum phytoplankton abundance was recorded on the Thanjavur coast and gradually decreased towards the south coast of Tamil Nadu. Among the phytoplankton community, 50% was dominated by pennate diatoms, attributed to higher NO3− concentrations in the coastal waters due to agricultural discharge. Cluster analysis revealed that Ramanathapuram and Tirunelveli formed a closed cluster, whereas Thanjavur and Pudukottai formed a separate closed cluster associated with higher nutrient and metal concentrations, highlighting the difference in physicochemical parameters between the northern and southern districts of the TN coast. Relatively high nutrient concentrations in the coastal waters of northern districts are of greater concern, which could impact the coastal ecosystem. Coastal eutrophication is becoming a widespread phenomenon, causing disruption in the food chain and ecosystem balances and hence requiring regular monitoring and management.

    Haslea ostrearia represents the model species of blue diatoms, a cluster of benthic marine species all belonging to the genus Haslea, noticeable for producing a blue pigment called marennine famous for its greening activity on the gills of bivalves but also for its potential in biotechnology. The exact distribution of H. ostrearia is unknown. It has been long considered a cosmopolitan diatom, but recent studies provided evidence for cryptic diversity and the existence of several other blue species, some of them inhabiting places where diatoms described as H. ostrearia had previously been observed. Recently, a marine diatom with blue tips was isolated into clonal culture from a plankton net sample from Kei Mouth on the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa. It was identified as H. ostrearia through a combination of LM/SEM microscopy and molecular analysis. This constitutes the first established record of this species from South Africa and the Indian Ocean and the second record for the southern hemisphere. Molecular barcoding clearly discriminated the South African strain from an Australian strain and cox1 based molecular phylogeny associated it instead with strains from the French Atlantic Coast, raising questions about the dispersal of this species. The complete mitochondrial and plastid genomes were compared to those of Haslea nusantara and Haslea silbo. Multigene phylogenies performed with all protein-coding genes of the plastome and the mitogenome associated H. ostrearia with H. silbo. In addition, complete sequences of circular plasmids were obtained and one of them showed an important conservation with a plasmid found in H. silbo.

    Addressing and anticipating future South Asian monsoon changes under continuing global warming is of critical importance for the food security and socioeconomic well-being of one-quarter of the world's population. However, climate model projections show discrepancies in future monsoon variability in South Asian monsoon domains, largely due to our still limited understanding of the monsoon response to warm climate change scenarios. Particularly, climate models are largely based on the assumption that higher solar insolation causes higher rainfall during similar warm climatic regimes, but this has not been verified by proxy data for different interglacial periods. Here, we compare Indian summer monsoon (ISM) variability during the Last Interglacial and Holocene using a sedimentary leaf wax δD and δ13C record from the northern Bay of Bengal, representing the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (G-B-M) river catchment. In combination with a seawater salinity record, our results show that ISM intensity broadly follows summer insolation on orbital scales, but ISM intensity during the Last Interglacial was lower than during the Holocene despite higher summer insolation and greenhouse gas concentrations. We argue that sustained warmer sea surface temperature in the equatorial and tropical Indian Ocean during the Last Interglacial increased convective rainfall above the ocean but dampened ISM intensity on land. Our study demonstrates that besides solar insolation, internal climatic feedbacks also play an important role for South Asian monsoon variability during warm climate states. This work can help to improve future climate model projections and highlights the importance of understanding controls of monsoonal rainfall under interglacial boundary conditions.
