Benthic Foraminiferal Response to the Millennial-Scale Variations in Monsoon-Driven Pro... - 0 views

    In this study, we presented a high-resolution benthic foraminiferal assemblage record from the western Bay of Bengal (BoB) (off Krishna-Godavari Basin) showing millennial-scale variations during the last 45 ka. We studied temporal variations in benthic foraminiferal assemblages (relative abundances of ecologically sensitive groups/species, microhabitat categories, and morphogroups) to infer past changes in sea bottom environment and to understand how monsoon induced primary productivity-driven organic matter export flux and externally sourced deep-water masses impacted the deep-sea environment at the core site. Our records reveal a strong coupling between surface productivity and benthic environment on glacial/interglacial and millennial scale in concert with Northern Hemisphere climate events. Faunal data suggest a relatively oxic environment when the organic matter flux to the sea floor was low due to low primary production during intensified summer monsoon attributing surface water stratification and less nutrient availability in the mixed layer. Furthermore, records of oxygen-sensitive benthic taxa (low-oxygen vs. high-oxygen benthics) indicate that changes in deep-water circulation combined with the primary productivity-driven organic matter flux modulated the sea bottom oxygen condition over the last 45 ka. We suggest that the bottom water at the core site was well-ventilated during the Holocene (except for the period since 3 ka) compared with the late glacial period. At the millennial timescale, our faunal proxy records suggest relatively oxygen-poor condition at the sea floor during the intervals corresponding to the cold stadials and North Atlantic Heinrich events (H1, H2, H3, and H4) compared with the Dansgaard/Oeschger (D-O) warm interstadials.     Haslea ostrearia represents the model species of blue diatoms, a cluster of benthic marine species all belonging to the genus Haslea, noticeable for producing a blue pigment called marennine famous for its greening activity on the gills of bivalves but also for its potential in biotechnology. The exact distribution of H. ostrearia is unknown. It has been long considered a cosmopolitan diatom, but recent studies provided evidence for cryptic diversity and the existence of several other blue species, some of them inhabiting places where diatoms described as H. ostrearia had previously been observed. Recently, a marine diatom with blue tips was isolated into clonal culture from a plankton net sample from Kei Mouth on the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa. It was identified as H. ostrearia through a combination of LM/SEM microscopy and molecular analysis. This constitutes the first established record of this species from South Africa and the Indian Ocean and the second record for the southern hemisphere. Molecular barcoding clearly discriminated the South African strain from an Australian strain and cox1 based molecular phylogeny associated it instead with strains from the French Atlantic Coast, raising questions about the dispersal of this species. The complete mitochondrial and plastid genomes were compared to those of Haslea nusantara and Haslea silbo. Multigene phylogenies performed with all protein-coding genes of the plastome and the mitogenome associated H. ostrearia with H. silbo. In addition, complete sequences of circular plasmids were obtained and one of them showed an important conservation with a plasmid found in H. silbo.

Microbiomes of Healthy and Bleached Corals During a 2016 Thermal Bleaching Event in the... - 0 views

    As seawater temperature rises, repeated thermal bleaching events have negatively affected the reefs of the Andaman Sea for over decades. Studies on the coral-associated microbial diversity of prokaryotes and microbial eukaryotes (microbiome) in healthy and bleached corals are important to better understand the coral holobionts that involved augmented resistance to stresses, and this information remains limited in the Andaman Sea of Thailand. The present study thereby described the microbiomes of healthy (unbleached) and bleached colonies of four prevalent corals, Acropora humilis, Platygyra sp., Pocillopora damicornis, and Porites lutea, along with the surrounding seawater and sediments, that were collected during a 2016 thermal bleaching event, using 16S and 18S rRNA genes next-generation sequencing (NGS). Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes showed isolated community profiles among sample types (corals, sediment, and seawater) [analysis of similarities (ANOSIM): p = 0.038 for prokaryotes, p < 0.001 for microbial eukaryotes] and among coral genera (ANOSIM: p < 0.001 for prokaryotes and microbial eukaryotes). In bleached state corals, we found differences in microbial compositions from the healthy state corals. Prevalent differences shared among bleached coral genera (shared in at least three coral genera) included a loss of reported coral-beneficial microbes, such as Pseudomonadales, Alteromonadales, and Symbiodinium; meanwhile an increase of putative coral-pathogenic Malassezia and Aspergillus. This difference could affect carbon and nitrogen availability for coral growth, reflective of a healthy or bleached state. Our findings in part supported previously microbial dysbiosis knowledge of thermal bleaching coral microbiomes around South East Asia marine geography, and together ongoing efforts are to support the understanding and management of microbial diversity to reduce the negative impacts to corals in massive thermal bleaching events.

    As predators of bacteria and viruses and as food sources for microzooplankton, heterotrophic flagellates (HFs) play an important role in the marine micro-food web. Based on the global climate change's impact on marine ecosystems, particularly sea ice melting, we analyzed the community composition and diversity of heterotrophic flagellates, focusing on the Antarctic Cosmonaut Sea. During the 36th China Antarctic research expedition (2019-2020), we collected seawater samples, subsequently analyzing HFs through IlluminaMiSeq2000 sequencing to assess community composition and diversity. Notable variations in HFs abundance were observed between the western and eastern sectors of the Cosmonaut Sea, with a distinct concentration at a 100-meter water depth. Different zones exhibited diverse indicators and dominants taxa influenced by local ocean currents. Both the northern Antarctic Peninsula and the western Cosmonaut Sea, where the Weddell Eddy and Antarctic Land Slope Current intersect, showcased marine stramenopiles as dominant HFs species. Our findings offer insights into dominant taxa, spatial distribution patterns among heterotrophic flagellates, correlations between taxa distribution and environmental factors, and the exploration of potential indicator taxa.

    Mangroves, intertidal forests, are increasingly considered a high-priority ecosystem for international conservation efforts. Setting targets for future mangrove conservation and restoration requires understanding of the health of the ecosystem. However, the way 'ecosystem health' is defined varies across locations, users, and indices due to differences in knowledge of the ecosystem, scales of the ecosystem being assessed, perceptions of what is 'healthy', or because of differences in the way people use or benefit from ecosystems. This can result in misunderstandings which can undermine effective actions to protect and restore functioning ecosystems. Here, we use a case study of a mangrove fishing community in coastal Thailand to examine how local people assess and define mangrove ecosystem health. Through participatory workshops, we show that local people use at least 27 indicators to define mangrove ecosystem health, including biological, physical, and human indices. Mangrove ecosystem health is defined by both direct material benefits derived from the ecosystem, non-material aspects, and the relational value experienced through 'bundles' of benefits linked to people's livelihood activities. Our findings suggest that ecosystem health frameworks would be more useful if they incorporated social components and metrics, recognising both the interdependencies between ecosystems and human societies, and that ecosystems possess intrinsic value. Local communities that interact most closely with ecosystems can contribute to improving and operationalising frameworks for ecosystem health.
