CodeProject: Fast, Scalable, Streaming AJAX Proxy - continuously deliver data from acro... - 0 views

  •
Due to browsers' prohibition on cross domain XMLHTTP calls, all AJAX websites must have a server side proxy to fetch content from external domains like Flickr or Digg. From the client-side JavaScript code, an XMLHTTP call goes to the server-side proxy hosted on the same domain, and then the proxy downloads the content from the external server and sends back to the browser. In general, all AJAX websites on the Internet that are showing content from external domains are following this proxy approach, except for some rare ones who are using JSONP. Such a proxy gets a very large number of hits when a lot of components on the website are downloading content from external domains. So, it becomes a scalability issue when the proxy starts getting millions of hits. Moreover, a web page's overall load performance largely depends on the performance of the proxy as it delivers content to the page. In this article, we will take a look at how we can take a conventional AJAX Proxy and make it faster, asynchronous, continuously stream content, and thus make it more scalable.

APIs and Developer Platforms: A Discussion on the Pros and Cons - ReadWriteWeb - 0 views

  •
Should your company offer an API for outside developers to build on? Should you engage in one of the fast growing developer platforms or with another company's API? There's a world of options opening up to leverage cross-site functionality and data exchange, but there are also some serious questions to ask about this emerging paradigm. There is still a major fraction of industry that refuses to accept the full efficiency and economy of the Internet. Sure, they might be using email and Google search, but that's about it. I'd like to create a list that spans various cross-sections of industries that are still missing the big picture. Feel free to chirp in with any other examples.

Web 2.0 Logo Map Displays Internet Start-ups That Vanished or Got Acquired - 0 views

  • Web 2.0 Logo Map - Original Version
  • Meg Pickard of Guardian went back to the drawing board and updated the original Web 2.0 map to mark companies that either vanished or were acquired in these years. Here’s her updated version of the chart.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Web 2.0 Companies That Got Acquired or Vanished
  • A pink cross means that the company is dead now while green circles mark companies that got acquired.
  • Obviously there are some companies like XDrive that were acquired but still closed shop so you see both a cross and circle against their logo. And two greens circles, as seen on the logo of Pegasus News, means that the company was acquired twice in the same period.
