Understanding the New Web Era - Web 3.0, Linked Data, Semantic Web - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
    The series aimed to tie together 3 big trends, all based around structured data: 1) the still nascent "Web 3.0" concept, 2) the relatively new kid on the structured Web block, Linked Data, and 3) the long-running saga that is the Semantic Web. Greg's series is probably the best explanation I've read all year about the way these trends are converging.

update on Warner Music (UPDATED) (AGAIN) (Lessig Blog) - 0 views

  •
    This is a video of a talk that Lawrence Lessig (Professor, Stanford Law School) gave for an unnamed organization. In his talk, Lessig provides a powerful and piercing analysis on the impact that legal restrictions on the re/use of media resources has on creativity and cultural production. During his talk, Lessig shows some remarkably creative mash-up videos on YouTube to exemplify the kind of creativity/cultural production that is possible through ubiquitous digital media, yet is considered copyright violation, for example, in the eyes of Warner Brothers Music Group. Ironically, the organization that hosted the talk received a notice from Warner Bros Music after posting a video of the Lessig's talk on YouTube, which, according to Lessig's blog, "objected to its being posted on copyright grounds." Warner Brother Music Group has implemented content-id algorithms (i.e., technology that detects the digital "fingerprint" of corporate-"owned" copyrighted works) through media hosting services, including YouTube, FaceBook, and others. When the video of Lessig's talk was posted, it was 'dusted' for fingerprints of WBMG copyrighted works. The detection system identified the soundtracks in the YouTube videos Lessig showed, as materials to which they held copyright. Both the video of Lessig's talk and the blog conversation regarding WBMG's objection are must-see resources.

    Jonathan G. Parker, 19 was one burglar who could multi-task. After breaking into a Martinsburg, West Virginia house and stealing 2 diamonds rings worth more than $3500, he had enough time to use the victim's computer to Google "best escape routes". If that's not enough, he also logged into his Facebook profile and updated his Facebook status that read, "OMG LOLZ brkin into sum1s house!"

StumbleUpon = Worthless Traffic | DAY JOB NUKER.COM - 0 views

  •
    Bringing this down to the bottom line, yet another blogger shares his experience, of watching people bounce away without doing much of anything on his site. How much is traffic like that to a site, and how much will somebody be willing to pay to keep getting more of it? As the author says, "The problem is that when I stumble I am in the mood for some fast action. I don't want to be bothered with heavy reading and just want to be amused." a spirit that, as somebody in one of the sites bookmarked above argues, Stumbleupon's business model gives the company and its management a perverse short term incentive to encourage. But can one encourage impatience and then, moments later, hope that impatience will suddenly vanish the moment a visitor reaches a sponsor's site? Or does behavior, once reinforced, tend to linger? Does the company really expect those sponsors to not notice that their bottom line isn't being helped, just because they hope it will, and assume that it must?

    In simple terms, CSS preprocessing is a method of extending the feature set of CSS by first writing the style sheets in a new extended language, then compiling the code to vanilla CSS so that it can be read by Web browsers. Several CSS preprocessors are available today, most notably Sass2 and LESS3.

Google Data Protocol - Google Code - 0 views

  •
    "The Google Data Protocol is a REST-inspired technology for reading, writing, and modifying information on the web. Many services at Google provide external access to data and functionality through APIs that utilize the Google Data Protocol. The protocol currently supports two primary modes of access: AtomPub: Information is sent as a collection of Atom items, using the standard Atom syndication format to represent data and HTTP to handle communication. The Google Data Protocol extends AtomPub for processing queries, authentication, and batch requests. JSON: Information is sent as JSON objects that mirror the Atom representation."
