Critical Approaches to Gender and 21st Century Pop Music

I referred to this song in my position paper - similarly to "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera, this is meant to inspire people to accept who they are and express their inn beauty. It's a really beautiful song and I just thought I would share it if you haven't heard it already.

What was the point in bringing Adele into her body issues? I understand that the press are going to ask her about her weight, but i dont see why she should have to compare her body to that of someone elses to justify her weight gain.

What she says makes me angry, I think the reason no one comments on Adeles weight the same as Lady Gaga is because Adele doesn't pose in her underwear so people can see how thin she is and hope they chage their view of her. Adele always says she is who she is love it or hate it which I personally really admire. I saw an interview of Adele where she said her weight and the way she looked was irrelavant to her music and shes not interested in people liking her; its all about the music for Adele. Instead of comparing herself in terms of weight maybe Gaga could compare authenticity and talent which is surely more important.

Yeah Miley has gone too far this time!! I think it is worth noting that the section where she was smoking a joint had been censored from TV. But why was it censored from US Television? Plus it begs the question of whether TV needs to have tighter restrictions on what should be seen and what should not.

This is a meme about the views on women and what feminism is standing up against and not the "man hating" view that most people have.

This is a blog response to Joss Whedon as a feminist ally, I think it's interesting to see how some people view things as opposite to what was intended.

Ignore the headline; E! News likes to over exaggerate and produce false headlines to attract attention. Whedon does not "call out" Katy Perry in a derogatory sense, he just uses a phrase she said as an example to demonstrate his point. This is an interesting viewpoint, worth watching. The guy is pretty funny, too!

I love Joss Whedon and all the shows/films he creates and part of that is because of his views on equality and how that translates to his shows. BUT, I read some interesting blog posts about about him that viewed his ideologies as patronising and ignorant. Whilst I don't agree and think he's just trying to do his bit, I think it's interesting to see other perspectives on what Whedon has to say.

Article on MTV about Miley's recent display at the EMA's. I find it interesting that she's still generating controversy and attention in a bid for more time in the limelight. I wonder what her next stunt will be...

A college student turned in a blog post we read early in the term as his paper.

I thought this short article was interesting after reading about the "homo-hop" genre. It was helpful for me to hear the perspective of a gay rapper echoing Gebreamlak's assertion about Macklemore neglecting to address his white, straight privilege. I also thought it was interesting that Le1f bashes Macklemore for "ripping from" one of his songs. This brings to light the issues of authenticity and copying from other artists, which we discussed in regards to Lady Gaga.

This is an image, since I couldn't find a video of this, but I think it works anyways.  When we were talking in class about how Same Love portrays gay people in the wrong light, it made me think of this scene in Modern Family.

This video is from Key and Peele's show. I think this video can be relevant to Thursday's class, when we talked about Macklemore and his song, Same Love.  It's obviously supposed to be funny, but just the fact that Key and Peele are both black makes for an interesting twist.

SNL does a parody of ' what the fox say' featuring Kerry Washington. I found it very entertaining.

I found this article on E! News online and I thought it was interesting to see how Miley is transforming not only as a person but also her website to match her new identity with half naked photos, foam fingers, and more.

Over the past few years, Electronic Dance Music a.k.a EDM has slowly crossover to the realm of pop culture. This article shows Lady Gaga music has been influenced by the EDM culture.

I thought I would post this version as we were discussing it today in class. We were saying how this version is more emotional because it is about an individuals story unlike Macklemores's version 'Same Love' which generalizes to everyone in the gay and lesbian community.
