A discussion of Katy Perry's comment that she is not a feminist that she made while accepting the Billboard Woman of the Year award. Really, this article uses the comment to discuss feminism in women's pop music as a whole.
A review of the album that "Can't Hold Us Down" by Christina Aguilera is on. The review especially discusses the album and song from a third wave feminism point of view.
I thought this was an interesting article because it criticises that critique of 'blurred lines'. In that women are actually being liberated and respected as independent sexual beings and not objects that are subjugated by any man. The article states that i no way is there a claim for rape instead the women is indeed being consensual. Moreover the writer for this is in fact a women and a feminist at that, she wasn't offended and actually liked the song. So therefore becoming offended when all this hype and backlash came out over what was actually a catchy song to listen to in the car.
Ignore the headline; E! News likes to over exaggerate and produce false headlines to attract attention. Whedon does not "call out" Katy Perry in a derogatory sense, he just uses a phrase she said as an example to demonstrate his point. This is an interesting viewpoint, worth watching. The guy is pretty funny, too!
I love Joss Whedon and all the shows/films he creates and part of that is because of his views on equality and how that translates to his shows. BUT, I read some interesting blog posts about about him that viewed his ideologies as patronising and ignorant. Whilst I don't agree and think he's just trying to do his bit, I think it's interesting to see other perspectives on what Whedon has to say.
I personally viewed this article just as a reminder of the "meaning" and purpose of feminism and how celebrities fit into the feminist movement, if they do, how, and why.
I thought this music video contributed to our discussion about the theme of the coming of age, "good girl gone bad" story that is of interest in popular culture. It also comments on gender and feminism.
This is an interesting article that relates feminism with fashion. I think this article will help us explore and understand the relation between pop culture and the use of fashion.
Perez Hilton and gossip websites/columns/shows/etc. are my weakness, as I admitted the first day of class... This article explains the current and on-going feud between Lorde and Selena Gomez regarding feminism in music. Even Cher Lloyd is making herself apart of this. Valid points either way, I believe.
"So are those oh-so supportive words she's been sweetly saying about Miley Cyrus not the truth? Selena Gomez has totes had her fellow teen queen's back as she raunches it up, but it sounds like she might not be Team Miley!" - Perez Hilton
Just thought this was interesting given the link I shared last week regarding the Lorde/SelG. feud. Didn't Gomez herself state that gossiping and dissing other women is not feminism? Hmm.
I liked this article because it gives the pros and cons of Taylor Swift, whether you like her or dislike her. The author does a great job stating straight facts about Taylor Swift. I thought that she has dated an outrageous amount of men throughout her career due to all of the breakup songs, but she really has only dated five guys in the past six years!
Similarly to Carolyn Gerig, I also find it irritating when people say they don't like Taylor Swift because she 'dates too many guys'. People tend to base this off the fact that a majority of her MOST POPULAR songs are break up songs and the fact that her relationships are all the media can seem to talk about. In this article, Gearig explains how people who have this view on her need to get their facts straight before making their judgement on her. If you don't like her style of music or you don't think she's a good singer, then by all means have it your way. But if your reasons for not liking her are due to her relationship habits, then you need to read this and have a rethink.
