Twitter - The Musical - YouTube - 1 views

  •
Upon finding this video i thought it was quite interesting in relation to our popular culture class. Whilst social media is part of popular culture this video, 'musicalised' Twitter! In part it is satirising what twitter has become in that people write about absolutely anything and so we are becoming 'fools', also that the celebrity world (such as Lady Gaga vs Perez Hilton) can be watched in your home and you don't even have to leave your bed! However it also emphasises the positives of social media where everyone is now  ''connected far and wide''and that the world is intertwined. Therefore the message presented is that twitter is what you make it.

The Interview: Miley Cyrus | Music, Features | HUNGER TV - 0 views

  •
In an interview this month with HungerTV, Cyrus stressed that she's in control of her image and the choices behind her music videos. She made an important point that she's probably more aware of what youth cultures want than corporate leaders are. But in order to make this point, she had to draw on stereotypes of a Jewish-controlled media, perhaps revealing anti-Semitism: "With magazines, with movies, it's always weird when things are targeted for young people yet they're driven by people that are like 40 years too old. It can't be like this 70 year old Jewish man that doesn't leave his desk all day, telling me what the clubs want to hear."

▶ Panic! At The Disco: Girls/Girls/Boys [OFFICIAL VIDEO] - YouTube - 0 views

  •
I bookmarked this video as a comparison to Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball'.  In both, the lead singer sings to the camera and it is slowly revealed that they are completely nude.  Yet, there seems to be very little controversy over the Panic! At the Disco video whereas the media is still talking about Cyrus.

Reminder: Fiona Apple Is Not Insane (and Neither Is Kanye West) - 0 views

  •
Kornhaber discusses how media outlets often respond to Fiona Apple by alluding to insanity: calling her outbursts crazy. However, this is a mechanism to raise sensationalism and not actually address issues (and even to dismiss them); if we look at Apple, she has very clear rational reasons for her behaviors, and her "outbursts" are often very rational, even if emotion-laden. Kornhaber then extends his critique, showing how often this sort of "reading" happens to other artists, including Kanye and Sinead O'Connor.

▶ Miss Representation Extended Trailer - YouTube - 0 views

  •
This is an extended trailer of a documentary called "Miss Representation".  The documentary explores the effect that media and media's portrayals of women affect women in every day life.  The actual documentary is on Netflix and is only an hour and a half long, and is definitely worth the watch.

Final Tally: Americans Were 12 Times More Interested in Miley Cyrus Than Syria - The Cut - 0 views

  •
A study of visits to online news stories found that Americans were 12 times as likely to visit an article about Miley Cyrus than Syria. This trend is despite news venues publishing 2.4 articles about Syria for every article about Cyrus.

Miley Cyrus Interview - 1 views

  •
I found this article really interesting because it gave an insight into Miley Cyrus herself and how she feels about her transformation rather than the hundreds of articles judging her without any context of Cyrus' intention. I liked the quote, where Cyrus stated that changing her hair effected everyone else more than her, I think it put the media fascination in an interesting light.

Elton John is "Worried" about Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus - 1 views

  •
This is a short article I found about how Elton John has expressed concerned about the two aforementioned stars. I thought it was very interesting because he compares Miley's recent stunts to Lindsey Lohan, claiming that she is a "meltdown waiting to happen." (There's also an expanded version of the article available.) Thoughts?
  •
I think this article shows Elton John as a supreme authority on female pop artists and enforces the idea of them as "meltdowns" and people in a mess. He uses his masculine power to downgrade female artistis. At the end of this article, I thought it was interesting that he discussed privacy of celebrities in the media. He considers this a detriment to celebrities and neglects to acknowledge how fan connection and participatory culture can be meaningful.

Reasons why Taylor Swift is worse than Miley Cyrus - 0 views

  •
here are six arguments stating that Taylor Swift is worse than Miley
  •
This is probably the WORST article for someone like me to read. Purely because I just LOVE Taylor Swift and couldn't hate Miley Cyrus anymore if I tried. Whoever wrote this is obviously just basing their facts off of the stuff that is touched upon in the media, particularly in relation to the songs Taylor Swift writes. 1. Oh Taylor's songs lack depth? And Miley's don't? Turn on the radio and listen to some of the trash they call 'music' on there and then come back and say that again. Yes, she writes about breakups but at least she can say that she experienced her songs unlike the crap that most popular artists sings who's lyrics were practically pulled out of a hat and strung together. 2. Not ALL her songs are about how she was victimized by her exes, they just so happen to be the ones that make it to the charts. For example, 'Back to December' was written about her previous relationship with Taylor Lautner and that she was wrong for hurting him etc. 'Better Than Revenge' is claimed to be about Camilla Belle after she quickly hooked up with Joe Jonas after he and Taylor split. Her first hit and most famous song 'Love Story' isn't even about a break up! 3. People criticize that Taylor is predictable because she only writes songs about break ups, well if that's so then why doesn't the public gather together and get her non-breakup songs on the charts? Why? Because they prefer the breakup ones. 4. Miley is a self-absorbed, loud, ex Disney star who is trying to break away from her Hannah Montana image and is only making her image worse.

Nicki Minaj went as "Trash" for Halloween - 1 views

  •
I found this article with a picture of Nicki Minaj in her halloween costume which is basically next to nothing. I think it would be interesting to compare her halloween costume to Miley's as "Lil Kim" and how the media portrays these two performers based on their reputation.
  •
This was a really good read! I totally agree with the person who wrote this article, I feel like girls are pressured to look "sexy" or it's ok for them to look that way ONLY on halloween and they can get away with it. I'm going to go look up Miley's costume now!

Christina Aguilera Latina Criticism - 0 views

  •
This short article shows how Christina Aguilera was criticized in the media for being "not Latina enough." It demonstrates how heritage is tied to ethnicity. It also shows how she responded to claims of her ethnicity being inauthentic. On a broader scale, the article reveals how ethnicity comes across through signs that audiences either accept or reject as authentic.

Lady Gaga Said to Fire Her Manager - 1 views

  •
Sounds like Lady Gaga isn't too happy with the way things are going with her new album! Lady Gaga fired her manager just days before her album release, which isn't very common among pop stars [this close to such a major event]. It's a pretty big deal; I suggest you all check this out!

Taylor Swift, Trouble Parody - 1 views

  •
I found this hilarious parody of Taylor Swift and her song Trouble. This Parody focuses on Taylor Swift's love life and sees her ex-boyfriends speaking out against the fact she constantly writes about her break ups. I thought it was a fun way to show how Taylor Swift is represented in the media.

Christians for Gay Marriage Launch "Not All Like That" Campaign - 0 views

  •
In the media, in the songs we're listening to, and in our everyday lives, there seems to be a war between Gays and Christians. It's whether you're on one side or the other. In the songs that we are to listen to for Thursday's class, there's an underlying topic about how all Christians are against Gay rights and they want to prosecute them. This article talks about Christians who are actually for Gay rights! Check it out!
