The Pervading Influence of Uncle Tom's Cabin in Pop Culture - Holly L. Derr - The Atlantic - 0 views

  •
An argument that Miley Cryus's VMA performance was (though unintentionally) a minstrel show that echoes the minstrelsy of the 19th century, especially performances of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." This is a heritage that we carry with us from theatre, and plays out in hollywood, such as "Orange Is the New Black" character Crazy Eyes.

A student at U of Western Ontario explains how white men in her mostly white college town fetishize and objectify her as a black woman, drawing on bell hooks' theory of "eating the other" -- this might be useful for anyone writing about race and sexuality.

Joss Whedon Goes on the Most Perfect Rant About Feminism, Calls Out Katy Perry in the P... - 0 views

Ignore the headline; E! News likes to over exaggerate and produce false headlines to attract attention. Whedon does not "call out" Katy Perry in a derogatory sense, he just uses a phrase she said as an example to demonstrate his point. This is an interesting viewpoint, worth watching. The guy is pretty funny, too!

I love Joss Whedon and all the shows/films he creates and part of that is because of his views on equality and how that translates to his shows. BUT, I read some interesting blog posts about about him that viewed his ideologies as patronising and ignorant. Whilst I don't agree and think he's just trying to do his bit, I think it's interesting to see other perspectives on what Whedon has to say.
