The Difference Between Technology Use And Technology Integration - 5 views

  •
"Using technology for learning makes sense. Technology creates access, transparency, and opportunity. Any smartphone or tablet is media incarnate-video, animation, eBooks, essays, blog posts, messages, music, games. The modalities of light, color, and sound all arranged just so to communicate a message or create an experience. But there is a difference, claims this graphic from teachbytes, between using technology and integrating it deeply into the learning experiences of students. This is, of course, what models like the SAMR model are based on-that idea of mere use to automate, to redefining what's possible."

How to start using game education (plus 4 games worth trying) - Daily Genius - 2 views

  •
"Jean Piaget once said that "play is the answer to how anything new comes about." As educators in the digital age, it is important that we embrace the power of play in our classrooms. One of the ways that we can redefine our practice is by using game education in our schools. Game education is a powerful way to engage 21st century learners in a variety of cognitively complex tasks that lead to deeper levels of understanding. Educational games help students to learn about certain subjects, expand their thinking on specific concepts, and reinforce skill development while they play while increasing engagement, empathy and excellence in the classroom."

Using The SAMR Model To Frame How To Teach With Apps - 0 views

  •
"Not all apps are created equal. Not all teacher planning and instructional design are created equal. Mash the two, and we're beginning to see the opportunity for some real disparity. In response, we've taken the popular SAMR model and use it as a framework to understand how to better teach with apps. This post started as a look at "app workflow"-the patterns of student and teacher interaction, the movement of learning artifacts, the visibility of quality criteria, assessment results, and so on, but we thought it might be better to start with some concrete examples of the movement from basic technology integration-in this case, apps-to that which redefines the learning process entirely. Below, then, are 21 ways apps can be used to teach-and learn-with varying degrees of ambition, from mere substitution of existing teaching practices, all the way to full-on redefinition of what's possible. (This post also presumes you're familiar with the SAMR model-if not, here's a good primer.)"

Meet Erica, the world's most human-like autonomous android - video | Technology | The Guardian - 2 views

  •
"Erica is 23. She has a beautiful, neutral face and speaks with a synthesised voice. She has a degree of autonomy - but can't move her hands yet. Hiroshi Ishiguro is her 'father' and the bad boy of Japanese robotics. Together they will redefine what it means to be human and reveal that the future is closer than we might think."

10 Breakthrough Technologies 2018 - MIT Technology Review - 0 views

  •
"Every year since 2001 we've picked what we call the 10 Breakthrough Technologies. People often ask, what exactly do you mean by "breakthrough"? It's a reasonable question-some of our picks haven't yet reached widespread use, while others may be on the cusp of becoming commercially available. What we're really looking for is a technology, or perhaps even a collection of technologies, that will have a profound effect on our lives. For this year, a new technique in artificial intelligence called GANs is giving machines imagination; artificial embryos, despite some thorny ethical constraints, are redefining how life can be created and are opening a research window into the early moments of a human life; and a pilot plant in the heart of Texas's petrochemical industry is attempting to create completely clean power from natural gas-probably a major energy source for the foreseeable future. These and the rest of our list will be worth keeping an eye on. -The Editors"

Sir Ken Robinson's Next Act: You Are the System and You Can Change Education | EdSurge News - 1 views

  •
Sir Ken Robinson's views on creativity are abundantly well documented. In his 2006 TED Talk-still the most-watched of all time-he claimed that "we are educating people out of their creative capacities" and charged the current education system with being too rigid in adhering to traditional academic subjects. Kids, he argued, need time to dance, draw, create and find what they're good at. But he hasn't given up on schools or education-far from it, in fact. For his follow-up act, Robinson is releasing a new book for parents on how to raise capable children who thrive in school. Make no mistake, though, he's still shaking up the system (and redefining what that actually means).

It's Not About What You Know. Soft Skills Are Hard - 2 views

  •
"If we collectively want to keep our jobs we must change the way we look at hard and soft skills. We have to find a way to redefine what they are, what is intensely human and what will remain our competitive advantage over the year in the advent of AI and job-threatening-robots.  With research showing that less and less importance is placed on conventional intelligence and with studies indicating that it can actually be counterproductive at work to employ too much of one's IQ while at the same time having organizations move away from formal education, what role does knowledge still play in this brave new world of soft skills and humanity? Professionals who attach a lot of their self-esteem to their intelligence will get bored easily, will get frustrated repeatedly and will feel less inclined to be truly engaged with their colleagues. What's the answer to that? Should they all aim lower to fit in? Is playing dumb a success condition? We have enough trouble getting passion and courage into ourselves and our people - if we now decide knowledge is superfluous what are we left with?"

What is work? | Deloitte Insights - 0 views

  •
"In the age of artificial intelligence, the answer to a more optimistic future may lie in redefining work itself. WORK, as an idea, is both familiar and frustratingly abstract. We go to work, we finish our work, we work at something. It's a place, an entity, tasks to be done or output to achieve. It's how we spend our time and expend our mental and physical resources. It's something to pay the bills, or something that defines us. But what, really is work? And from a company's perspective, what is the work that needs to be done? In an age of artificial intelligence, that's not merely a philosophical question. If we can creatively answer it, we have the potential to create incredible value. And, paradoxically, these gains could come from people, not from new technology."

Do Teachers Need to Relearn How to Learn? - Redefining my role: Teacher as student - 6 views

  • So how did I learn all of the technology I use in my instruction and in my online collaborations with teachers? I learned it on my own.
  • So, I started using the internet to learn how to do what I wanted to do – blog, make videos, make podcasts, publish student work, etc. Of course it wasn’t easy, but I wanted to learn it so I did. (That is key – my learning was self-directed.)

Will the Next Internet Revolution Be Televised? - EconMatters - - Forbes - 3 views

  • The long heralded, but long delayed, integration of TV and the Internet is finally upon us. In the two hours between 8:00 and 10:00 PM, Netflix streaming movies and TV shows account for one-fifth (not a misprint) of all the Internet bandwidth being used in the United States. And that’s not the half of it. True Internet TV is about to go mainstream.

Books in the Age of the iPad - Craig Mod - 5 views

  • Important to note is that these aren’t complaints about the text losing meaning. Books don’t become harder to understand, or confusing just because they’re digital. It’s mainly issues concerning quality.
  • We're going to see new forms of storytelling emerge from this canvas. This is an opportunity to redefine modes of conversation between reader and content.

Interesting thought. I see many people on facebook with hundreds of friends, but they probably have spoken to many of those people once or twice face to face. Social networking has redefined the term "friend" to a certain degree.
