Women and Wealth » Insights » Capital Acumen Online - 1 views

  • A GROWING ECONOMIC FORCE The statistics are telling. Today, women account for nearly half of the overall labor force (compared with just over 38% in 1970).1 More than 10 million businesses, or 30% of all privately held firms, are owned by women.2 Women are also managers and senior business leaders; in fact, more than 43% of women are in management roles and 24% are in senior leadership positions. They constitute more than a third of all physicians and surgeons, and nearly a third of attorneys.3

Excellent statistics for my divorce/widowhood module. "Widowhood: Many married women will outlive their spouses. On average, women live seven years longer than their male counterparts, and women aged 65 and over are three times as likely as men of the same age to lose a spouse (44% compared with 14%).

The Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty - 0 views

  • In 2011, Dove® released the findings of its largest global study to date on women’s relationship with beauty—The Real Truth About Beauty: Revisited. The study revealed that only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful, and that anxiety about looks begins at an early age. In a study of over 1,200 10-to-17-year-olds, a majority of girls, 72%, said they felt tremendous pressure to be beautiful. The study also found that only 11% of girls around the world feel comfortable using the word beautiful to describe their looks, showing that there is a universal increase in beauty pressure and a decrease in girls' confidence as they grow older. Though Dove® efforts have moved the needle in a positive direction, there is more to be done

AASL provides a ton of research, data, and statistics saying librarians are needed to teach students 21st century learning skills. Schools staffed with librarians have better student outcomes in reading and test scores. Students who read better and are taught research skills by a librarian will have an easier time learning.

Designing for Mobile Devices in Higher Education Research « Researching Usabi... - 0 views

CDL Recommendations: Auto-detect mobile devices and automatically display mobile version of a site (though always provide obvious links back to the full version of the site). Create mobile websites rather than apps whenever possible so that users do not  need to download software in advance of using it. Advertise through a variety of channels, including campus or departmental emails, campus websites, library websites, and blogs. Overall CDL design recommendations: Set up testing practices and environments for the most heavily used device platforms (Apple iOS,  RIM Blackberry OS, and Android OS). Test with physical devices where possible rather than emulation environments. Support mobile web access as opposed to building standalone mobile applications. Adopt and maintain web analytical tools to accurate mobile device tracking and usage statistics for online services. Continue to survey constituents and end-users annually or bi-annually to capture rapidly changing behaviours.

  • “No,”
  • “We are creating a way for you to spend time in class teaching different things, freed from the burden of teaching basic skills.” The software gives individualized instruction in 12 subjects, using sophisticated tracking of skill development and offering instant feedback and help based on the student’s mastery of concepts. The idea is to use this to teach basic statistics, say, instead of using a professor’s lectures—and time—on the fundamentals.
  • “We want professors in these courses, which are first- and second-year classes, talking about more sophisticated ideas with the students,”
  • Research published on the Carnegie Mellon course modules indicates that they are effective. At a large public university, 99 percent of students taking the program’s formal-logic course online completed it, compared with 41 percent of students in the traditional course. At Carnegie Mellon, students who took an accelerated-statistics course in hybrid form completed it in eight weeks, and learned as much material, and performed as well on tests, as did students taking a traditional 15-week course
