Threaded Vs. Linear - 0 views

  • . This is the preferred form
  • Linear is less helpful for convergent conversations, fragmented and detailed topics and coming to closure.
  • Both forms, and even a combination of the two, have their place and usefulness. However, people tend to have strong prefernces for the format they first used. Within a team, there may be some differences of opinions on this.

Constructivist Learning Theory | Exploratorium - 0 views

  • learners construct knowledge for themselves---each learner individually (and socially) constructs meaning---as he or she learns. 3 Constructing meaning is learning; there is no other kind. The dramatic consequences of this view are twofold;
  • 1) we have to focus on the learner in thinking about learning (not on the subject/lesson to be taught):
  • 2) There is no knowledge independent of the meaning attributed to experience (constructed) by the learner, or community of learners

ETAP640amp2012: How do they do it in their online courses? - 0 views

  • Communicative Real-time chat, e-mail exchange, discussion lists (Warschauer, 1997), use of speech recognition-based dialog systems (Luperfoy, 1998) Sociolinguistic Task-based, problem-solving, and role-playing activities that address sociolinguistic differences between native and target languages, and that could involve real-time chat, e-mail exchange, discussion lists (Chun, 1994) Strategic Task-based, problem-solving, and role-playing activities that require learners to achieve specific goals (e.g., persuading, self-correcting, negotiating a desired outcome); these could involve real-time chat, e-mail exchange, and discussion lists

Alan Singer: Cuomo, Common Core and Pearson-for-Profit - 0 views

  • ts taught in schools across the United States with little or no parental or educational oversight. Pearson standardized exams will assess how well teachers implement Pearson instruction modules and Pearson's common core standards, but not what students really learn or whether students are actually learning things that are important to know. Pearson is already creating teacher certification exams for eighteen states including New York, organizing staff development workshops to promote Pearson products, and providing school district Pearson assessment tools. In New York, Pearson Education currently has a five-year, $32 million contract to administer state test and provides other "testing services" to the State Education Department. It also recently received a share of a federal Race to the Top grant to create what the company calls the "next-generation" of online assessments.

  • What is the theory that underpins our moocs?
  • Interactions are distributed, multi-spaced.
  • Fostering autonomous and self-regulated learners. At the core of the MOOCs that I’ve been involved with is a power question: what can learners do for themselves with digital tools and networks? MOOCs foster not only a particular type of knowledge in a particular area of inquiry; they also foster a self-regulated, motivated, and autonomous learner. When an instructor does for learners what learners should do for themselves, the learning experience is incomplete. Developing capacity for learning and the mindsets needed to be successful learners is a central attribute of our MOOCs. We are not only concerned with the epistemological development of learners (knowing stuff) – we target ontological development (being a certain type of person) as well.

  • The only point this article I thought wasn’t accurate was the point that online learning is an intimate community. I think the opposite. I have not continued my friendship with anyone really from my previous classes, where I might have with traditional classes.

I wonder what you will think about this at the end of this course : )

what is with the lack of word wrap? please fix. : )
  • August 4, 2012,
  • Well one thing I have learned is that to get students thinking you need an interesting prompt like this.
  • 12th?
    • alexandra m. pickett

      the course ends the 17th NOT the 12th... : ) i have you for 2 more weeks : )
  • To really have learned something I think it means it will stay with you, you will use it. It will be in your thoughts after the class has concluded.
  •  Coming into this class I thought I was a technology native. I thought I knew a lot about the internet, its uses for the classroom and ways I could utilize it. This class has pushed my limits showing me there is endless posiblities and things I will do even in my face to face class. For example, I was introduced to vociethread. This I will use to connect my classroom to another and make an authentic population for my students to present to. I would even use it to show student work at an open house.
  • The end of this class allows me one more thing, bring it on baby #3 I am finally ready to meet you and I only have a couple weeks until fall classes start so umm come tomorrow!?

The Information Fluency Triad The terms for this model have been chosen carefully. It is information, not digital. Many parts of the information fluency model are analog, or comprised of characteristics for which the digital/analog terminology isn't germane. It is fluency, not literacy.

Roger Clarke's Innovation Diffusion Theory - 1 views

  • technological innovation is communicated through particular channels, over time, among the members of a social system.
  • The stages through which a technological innovation passes are: knowledge (exposure to its existence, and understanding of its functions); persuasion (the forming of a favourable attitude to it); decision (commitment to its adoption); implementation (putting it to use); and confirmation (reinforcement based on positive outcomes from it).

This is a game that can be used in the beginning days of school to review number operations and get students minds back in math mode after a long summer.

This is another game that can be used in the beginning of the class to help review order of operations and help students to get to know each other when placed in groups to help develop the class community.
  •
Very Cool Celeste. Will you be able to incorporate these games in your online course? If so can you tell us how you plan to use them?

  • (1) functionalist, which is directive and advice-driven, (2) engagement, which uses a nondirective approach, (3) revolutionary, which promotes radical change, and (4) evolutionary, which uses reflective dialogue to identify and challenge the prevailing discourse. The course under study incorporated two types of coaching: functionalist and evolutionary.

Just some of Kelly's thoughts - 0 views

  • As I work on finalizing my course one of the main things I will be thinking about is, do my modules and learning activities tell a story? Or do my modules and learning activities need to be rearranged so that their story makes more sense?
  • During this course I feel like I almost found myself as an instructor.  I know that sounds a little strange but I feel like I now know who I am and what I am capable of.  This course gave me, in some way, the confidence that I needed to be a better instructor to my students in a f2f setting.
  • This course has taught me to keep on learning.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • One of the most important things that I learned was about building a classroom community and the similarities it has between the online classroom and a f2f classroom.
