We've rounded up (in random order) some great services that help you go straight to expert sources and keep track of your research. These digital tools can keep you on track--whether you're working on a middle-school science fair, wrapping up a graduate degree, or pursuing a hobby.

Diigo is a website which allows users to bookmark and tag websites. It also allows users to highlight all or part of a page and attach sticky notes to the page. These annotations can be kept private, shared with a group within Diigo or a special link forwarded to someone else. The name "Diigo" is an abbreviation for "Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff".[1] The launch of Diigo met with mixed responses from the unimpressed [2] to the enthusiastic [3]. The product is still capable of further development such as that comprehensively detailed by a Diigo user at [4] but response on whole has been positive an example of which can be seen in the comparison between several social bookmarking sites on IA-Blog [5] Diigo beta was listed as one of the top 10 research tools by CNET in 2006 [6].

Diigo is an online bookmarking tool with a twist. Sometimes, merely saving a bunch of tagged Web sites to a list of favorites is not enough. Ever wanted to highlight one cool corner of a Web page? Do you wish you could scribble on various Web sites to collect recipes, plan a vacation, or write a big research paper, then share your notes? Diigo can help you do that.

Diigo's plain text interface is as simple as that of Del.icio.us, yet with additional functionality. For instance, Diigo lets you select a bunch of bookmarks at once and change their settings; Del.icio.us does not.

Diigo looks as basic as Del.icio.us, but ease-of-use tweaks make a big difference in convenience. For instance, you can select all items on the page and change their settings at once, which Del.icio.us doesn't allow. Advanced search features look within the text of a page, as well as at tags, titles, and your annotations

Diigo: Bookmarking evolved August 1, 2006 6:39 PM PDT There's yet another new bookmarking utility live now: Diigo. This one is different. In addition to letting you bookmark pages and share those bookmarks with others, it also lets you highlight parts of pages (text or images), and store those highlight not just in your Diigo account but on the Web pages themselves (if you have the plug-in). You can also attach post-it-like notes to your highlights on Web pages, and they can be private or shared. Old-timers may recollect one of the first Web annotation services, ThirdVoice. That tool also let you mark up any Web page you visited, so that other ThirdVoice users could see what everybody had to say. The service died in a firestorm of controversy, but we've evolved since then -- what people used to call graffiti we now call interactivity and community. The annotation capability sets Diigo apart from Del.icio.us and makes it a more granular data gathering tool, like ClipMarks. Diigo lets you take your clips and do useful things with them: You can publish them all as a Web page, or directly to a blog, or send them in emails. With the Diigo toolbar installed, you can also easily mark parts of any Web page and forward them directly via email. It's a handy and universal "send this article" function, and the highlighting tool makes it much easier to add context. It took me a while to grok Diigo, though. There's a lot going on here, and like a Swiss Army knife, there are blades that new users will find confusing. What's a customizable search bar doing here? And why does Diigo act so much like a social bookmarking tool -- do we really need another one of these? Diigo has very useful annotation and organizational features, though, and if want good way to mark up the Web for personal use or a fast way to send clips to people you know, it's worth checking out. Diigo lets you permanently highlight, annotate, tag and manage text from any website. When you view your bookmarks you can also view the sections you highlighted and the notes you wrote. It is much more useful than a mere “social bookmarking” service such as del.icio.us, Furl, or Digg. Diigo is my current “killer application”. Diigo, a company that specialize in social bookmarking service is releasing a new and updated of its core product, i.e. Diigo version 3.0. Diigo v3.0 comes with a completely new User Interface and code base, as well as over 100 new features has aimed to give its users a different experience in using the social bookmarking and annotation service. Based on the features of Diigo v3.0, it is undoubtedly that it has been cited as the top 10 research tools by CNET.

The good: Diigo imports bookmarks from elsewhere; tags pages by topic; lets you mark up and share Web pages; has a simple interface; toolbar and bookmarklet allow quick bookmarking; bookmarks simultaneously to rival services; searches text and comments within bookmarks. The bad: Diigo's subscription features are under construction; doesn't automatically merge similar tags; doesn't preview bookmarked pages. The bottom line: Diigo lets you save, import, tag, highlight, mark up and share Web pages--offering more advanced research tools than Del.icio.us.

Judging by common bookmark tags, such as "Web 2.0," the Diigo community is full of tech-savvy users. Still, we find it straightforward enough that a dedicated bookmarking newbie shouldn't have a problem adopting Diigo as a research companion. Diigo is great for taking notes on Web pages and using them to collaborate with other users--and since we started using Diigo, we've lost our appetite for Del.icio.us.

We've seen Diigo before, but now it has a few tweaks to simplify it. Diigo is meant as a collaborative research tool to let you highlight and bookmark specific portions of text you find on the Web. Diigo now also lets groups discuss highlighted text and and publish it onto a blog.

Diigo is the most useful tool for take-it-with-you research. It not only organizes and tags bookmarks, it also lets you mark up Web pages as you would a paperback book--with sticky notes, highlights, and comments--then share those notes with others.
