These guidelines were developed during the Conference on Fair Use. Educators and students are advised to exercise caution in using digital material downloaded from the Internet in producing their own educational multimedia projects, because there is a mix of works protected by copyright and works in the public domain on the network. Access to works on the Internet does not automatically mean that these can be reproduced and reused without permission or royalty payment and, furthermore, some copyrighted works may have been posted to the Internet without authorization of the copyright holder.\n

"Kids' Informal Learning with Digital Media: An Ethnographic Investigation of Innovative Knowledge Cultures" is a three-year collaborative project funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

In 2006, legislation in the state of Virginia added a new component to the educational curriculum for GR K-12: Internet Safety for Students. This colorful 25-page Citizen's Cyberguide focuses on a middle school audience and integrates ethical standards that can promote their use of the web more wisely and responsibly. Includes information on general safety, social networking and gaming and is designed to help kids develop safety skills, cyberethics and respect regarding their behavior online. Materials were developed at James Madison University.

To ensure that students' behaviors do not jeopardize their future careers, educators must understand the online activities that present ethical and professional issues and make every effort to educate students about appropriate behavior and interactions in an online environment

Purdue University's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance & Security (CERIAS) offers over a dozen classroom lesson plans and activities for K-12 students around topics related to digital security.

Many school districts are adopting Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) to educate parents and students about Internet use and issues of online privacy and safety, and seek parental consent for their children's use of the Internet. For example, an AUP may tell parents about the privacy policies of online services with which a school has contracts and students' use of non-contract websites. It may include cautions against children disclosing personal information to websites - such as their full name, home or email address, and telephone number. Or it may tell parents that the school has established classroom email accounts rather than individual accounts if email communication is necessary between students and online services.

Tools for teaching Information Literacy

In summer 2007, a music professor at BU was shocked to learn that he had a Facebook page - in his name, with a recent photo and a spot-on bio. But, the professor recalls, "embedded in the document were really scurrilous things that were reputed to have been said by me, and they were quite unpleasant and ugly and immature."
