Haiti's tradition of curious tyrants, by Robert Dewar. Contemporary Review 284.1660 (Ma... - 1 views

This is a history that compares the past with the present, looking for patterns. I think it is well worth our time to consider this history at this time.

Haiti's history as first black republic creates a special bond with many African-Americ... - 0 views

  • Under French rule, Haiti's abundant sugar plantations made it perhaps the richest colony of the Caribbean. The slave rebellion began about 1790 and a leader soon emerged: Toussaint L'Overture. After years of fierce fighting, L'Overture was captured by Napoleon's forces and died in France. The rebellion lived on, and Napoleon's mighty forces were defeated. Haiti declared itself a nation on Jan. 1, 1804. For years to come, however, Haiti would pay reparations to France. The loss of Haiti's riches and strategic location was part of Napoleon's decision to sell the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States. In America, where blacks were still seeking freedom, there was pride and wonder that Haitians had seized their destiny. This left an indelible imprint on African-American culture.

The history that is suggested here is very important. There's a lot of "looking the other way" racism in the U.S. response to the revolution that isn't mentioned here, too.
  • America occupied Haiti from 1915 until 1934, then supported a series of dictators until 1990. Today, Haitian refugees are treated differently than those from other nations, which many believe is partially due to race.
    • Paul Allison

I've been reading this wondering when America's more active role in Haiti would be mentioned. I pretty sure that the CIA was involved in the 1994 coup and that our Marines were involved in Aristede's kidnapping in 2004.

Report from Haiti: Desperate Call for Aid with Rescue Equipment, Medicine, Food & Water... - 0 views

  • I didn’t see a single aid worker or a single official aid convoy from the Haitian government or from an aid agency or from the peacekeeping force that’s here, the United Nations.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

      Well, where are they
    • Hannah EWSIS

Really where are they these people need help to recover from this tragic event.
    • Hawa EWSIS

I don't see where these people could be? What are they doing and where are they?
    • Reasat EWSIS

      Where are they?
  • I think that some parts of the city do have electricity. Also phone service is really spotty, but occasionally it seems to work. I’ve been able to receive a few calls and, just on occasion, make a call out. But many times, there is no service.

I can't begin to express my horror as I picture these small children being crushed it is a terrible state of events

  • And I talked to people there, and many of the children were just immediately crushed.
    • Helen EWSIS

When I heard this, I just wanted to cry. Little children, younger than I am, lost their lives in an instant. No one know what is going to happen in the future, but I just feel like I can't really do anything for these dead children and their families. I wish I could.
    • Hawa EWSIS

I...I really felt sad when I read this. It's unforunate that these children died at such a young age and so violently at that.
  • are still in the streets trying to stay away from houses and walls and buildings that can further collapse, buildings that are fragile.
    • MelissaB EWSIS

Wow there are still buildings falling to the ground three days after the earthquake.
    • Rachel EWSIS

I can't believe that the bulidings are still falling down. It must have been so strong and powerful earthquake.
  • There was just a state of panic in the streets, people screaming, people running every which way.
    • MelissaB EWSIS

Were is everyone at where is the international help and they need it wether or not there is any central government there is still need and they are still people so there is a thing called caring and duty.
    • Rachel EWSIS

I think that people will be running around and they will be panicing because, they are scared and they don't know what to do.
  • You’ve got the natural disaster of the earthquake and then the poverty of Haiti
  • So it’s an extremely sad situation. You have mothers outside, outside of these schools
  • They don’t know what they can do besides wait, because the Haitian government is so weak.
  • g I can say, for example, that’s a little bit striking is that the slum
    • MelissaB EWSIS

I guess the slums werent hit that bad.
  • I was down at the prison yesterday, as well. And, you know, people were concerned with the fact that prisoners escaped. There was a woman there whose son was inside the prison at the time of the earthquake, and he was gone. She was looking for him. The prison is entirely empty. The roof just seems to have disappeared, sort of collapsed in on the building. And I believe there was a fire there, as well. Parts of the building were charred. So I think it’s, you know, a state of chaos in really different parts of the city.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

This can be scary for people because if a murderer has escaped, people would be scared to sleep at night. Peace would not be maintained and also saving lives can be harder because of this.

  • Yeah, we need agents. We need emergency. There is no help, no hospital, no electricity, nothing. No food, no phone, no food, no water, nothing. There are too many people dying.
    • corey stanley

The people of Haiti will not survive if something is not done quickly, with no water, no hospitals its impossible to survive.
    • Nicole EWSIS

There are many agencies and people trying to send donations, giving money, and trying to help. This poor country was not prepared for this damage and people will help.
    • Ammy EWSIS

However other countries are hastly trying to get there and aid the people. It's not just hundreds of people that we are talking about, its over thousands. Agencies are desperately trying to get there and give out help. I really hope they make it through. God bless
  • We had one nurse at our hotel, so he was out front helping people who were coming in who were injured. When word got out that there was a nurse at our hotel, people just started bringing their injured family members to the hotel. I was deputized by the nurse to help in whatever way I could. So he would tell me where a broken bone was, and I had to learn on the sly how to make a splint.

  • The World Health Organization said it had sent specialists to help clear the city of corpses, and the International Red Cross was sending a plane loaded mainly with body bags. Medicine, food and water are in short supply. And Haitians are desperate for aid.
  • The injuries just kept coming all day long—head injuries, people with multiple broken legs, people catatonic who couldn’t speak. Everybody is asking for medicine. You know, we don’t have basic—we don’t have Advil.
  • It’s hard to describe. I was working on a boy who his father was there speaking in Creole, so we were trying to get a good translation, but basically what he explained was that their house collapsed, and he got out, but his son was trapped under the rubble. But he could—his son could still yell, and they spent all night trying to find him, and finally they dug him out, and they brought him to our hotel, because there was one nurse at our hotel.
    • Jeannie EWSIS

It is important to hear from someone who was at the site him/herself. Jesse describes how horrific it is to see the victims lying there on the streets.
  • The situation is increasingly desperate, with no coordinated rescue plan so far and aid only trickling in.
    • Helen EWSIS

This just makes me even sadder. I feel like even though different countries are trying to do something, whether it's giving aid, providing food and water, or medicine, it's still not enough. I can't imagine what the death tool will be.

It is really sad to hear that there are bodies just laying there and very little things done to get them on another place or relocate them. Its sad to hear that so many people died, people that had no idea what was going to happen.

After watching the video, I was utterly speechless. It's really sad to know that another country is in desperate help of need, especially when they weren't in a good state before.Having a massive earthquake hit a city that;s already in poverty is really devastating. The situation is almost similar to that of the tsunami that happened just a few years ago. Other countries are contributing by sending over aid and people to help revive the city and help the people. Most of the buildings have collapsed and many of the few buildings had cracks. It's very interesting to hear about different people who were visiting Haiti speak about their experience during the disaster. Over thousands of people in Haiti are currently homeless and injured. A person walking by would be able to witness bodies being crushed by concrete and bodies covered by a sheet of blanket laying on the floor. The country is now short in water supply, food, money, and many important factors. People are desperate for aid and money. I think it's great that other countries aren't just standing by and not doing anything. I hope in the future, they will be able to revive most of the damaged buildings and maybe the people there will find jobs and homes again.

  • Strong shaking with intensity VII–IX on the Modified Mercalli scale (MM) was recorded in Port-au-Prince and its suburbs. It was also felt in several surrounding countries and regions, including Cuba (MM III in Guantánamo), Jamaica (MM II in Kingston), Venezuela (MM II in Caracas), Puerto Rico (MM II–III in San Juan), and the bordering country of Dominican Republic (MM III in Santo Domingo).

Doubting Darwin: Debate Over The Mind's Evolution : NPR - 0 views

shared by Luis EWSIS on 14 Jan 10 - Cached
  • These days, some Darwin skeptics are focusing on the human brain. They say a higher power must be involved; otherwise, how could a bunch of cells produce such complicated mental processes as consciousness or subjective experiences? How could something like free will be the result of evolution?
    • Luis EWSIS

Here, a great problem concerning the mind has brought great debate. Questions about the human mind and its capacity has overwhelmed humanity for many years. Yet, there is still no answer. Many theories attepmt to take a view on the issue but they are too ofeten criticized with things that are still unexplainable.
  • "If you change the brain, you change the mind. If you damage the brain, you damage the mind. If you turn off the brain, you turn off the mind," he says."And now with more sophisticated tools, when we're looking at brain function with functional MRI, for example, we can see that brain activity precedes mental activities — and that makes sense, because causes come before their effects."
    • Luis EWSIS

The fact that brain activity comes before mental activity is a very interesting evidence that our rationale is the effect of nerves and cells and thus provide an insight to the physical quality of conciousness rather than just assuming that consciousness is separate from our physical body as if the body were to be possesed by a conscious soul.
  • "I'm a neurosurgeon. I realize how closely the mind and the brain are related," Egnor says. "But the question is, is there something else, in addition to the material properties of the brain, that we need to invoke to have an adequate explanation for the mind? And I think there is."Egnor says that an intelligent designer was involved in producing not only the brain but all living things and certain features of the universe. Without this designer, the brain would be just a meat computer made up of brain cells, he says."There is nothing about neurons that scientifically would lead you to infer consciousness from them. They're masses of gelatinous carbon and hydrogen and nitrogen and oxygen, just like other kinds of flesh. And why would flesh have first-person experience? So, even logically, it doesn't hang together."
    • Luis EWSIS

Here is the argument for creationism, a way to push the question to a supreme being as the only explanation of something we are ignorant of. I do not mean to say that it is wrong; in fact it "might" be true, but this answer is as good as a simple "I don't know." There was a lecture on psychology I saw and it says that the idea of creationism is just "unsatisfying and unhelpful" which means a lot when we're trying to find a solution that can really help us understand the workings of our mind.

Poll shows fans want to dump Bowl Championship Series, get playoff - ESPN - 0 views

  •
One of the most discussed issues in American sports today is the current bowl system in college football. Majority of the Americans, especially fans, favor on having a playoff, just like in every other sports leagues, to determine a National Champion, rather than having multiple Bowl games. According to survey conducted by Quinnipiac University, 63 percent favor a playoff system while getting rid of the current system. Only 26 percent favor on keeping the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) system. Even the President of our nation, Barack Obama favors a playoff system in college football. This issue was even involved in the U.S. Congress. The House was planning on passing a legislation to remove the current BCS system and implement a playoffs to decide a National Champion. However, 48 percent of the fans do not think it's a good idea for Congress to get involved with this, while 45 percent do. The Congress hasn't done anything yet. I personally believe that the Congress should stay out of this and worry about much more important government issues

I personally believe that the Congress should stay out of this and worry about much more important government issues. What exactly is the BCS? Bowl Championship Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

The ReDistricting Game - 0 views

The Redistricting Game is designed to educate, engage, and empower citizens around the issue of political redistricting. Currently, the political system in most states allows the state legislators themselves to draw the lines. This system is subject to a wide range of abuses and manipulations that encourage incumbents to draw districts which protect their seats rather than risk an open contest.

Something that I have been interested in learning more about has been Alcohol. I remember my Uncle drinking Beer at a party. And I remember him telling people that Beer is the best thing to drink. At that time, I didn't know what he meant by that. Lately, the issue has caught my eye again. I know that many people feel that Alcohol is not really bad for men and women. From what I have heard, Alcohol is bad for people. For example, I heard that alcohol damages your body and brain. Now that's just what I've heard, it may or may not be true. One thing that I know for sure about Alcohol is that it's really harmful for Teenagers. Now I've studied my share of Medicine, and I believe that Alcohol is bad for everyone that drinks it every day in their life. It affects their brain and body. I also know that if your drink a lot of alcohol like beer, you have a great possibility of getting fat. And this is true because my Uncle got fat throughout time. And Why? Because he kept drinking beer. Personally, it's funny to me how people know the effects on alcohol and they keep on consuming it. Alcohol wasn't important to me in the past, because I'm not suppose to be learning about Alcohol when I'm only six years old. What I know about Alcohol is that it makes you act in a bad way. It damages your body. Alcohol makes you feel like in pain. Being that I didn't have a lot of background information on Alcohol, I chose to do some research on the topic. As I searched for blogs and news articles on Google, I came across this one article: http://howdoigetoffdrugs.com/2010/01/negative-effects-of-excessive-alcohol-consumption-on-the-body/. This article provided a lot of information and opinions on Alcohol .Some people felt that alcohol dependency is a chronic illness that can destroy a person's career and their family. It can also be fatal to their health if left untreated. And that substantial alcoholic substances drinking on a common basis causes chemical changes to a indi

The Henricus » Multiple Intelligences or Strategic Teaching? - 0 views

I'm learning more about multiple intelligences right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about what are the different types of intelligences?. I was researching this question online and this blog post caught my attention because it tells what are the different intelligences and it talks about them. "instead of matching your teaching style to a learning style, match your teaching style to the content. " The quote I chose here is basically saying that teachers should teach in a way that it'll match the content. For example if they are teaching about math they should use the method of logic, also use visualize to teach the kids so they can see it step by step. I think is explaining a lot about multiple intelligences because it tells how teachers should teach students since everyone has a different learning style. It makes me wonder if there is a way that teachers can teach everyone and everyone will be able to understand it with no problem.

  • Each student is uniquely different and learns in a variety of different way. So you will find that many of the top tier private preschools and child care centers will recognize this on a daily basis. Many of these best schools will let each child learn at their own pace and steer them into smaller groups for learning. The student will do more reading if it is shown that they have more advancement in linguistic stimulation. Or if he or she show advancement in reasoning, mathematics, or creative arts, then the student will be lead in the direction.

I'm learning more about Howard Gardner right now and in particular what I am wondering now is: What made him want to write about these eight intelligences?I was researching this question online and this blog post caught my attention because the background is very eyecatching and the summary was very vague but I thought about it and I figured out what the writer had meant. The quote I chose was basiacally the answer to my question because it states the reason that he wrote the book with those learning styles, he says that the best schools focus on your individual talents so you succeed in your life to your best ability

Multiple Intelligences - 0 views

I'm learning more about the multiple intelligences right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: What do other people think of it? I was researching this question online, and this twitter post caught my attention because it was a person's simple opinion, not some long thought-out piece. "It is not how smart you are but how you are smart. That's the basic premise of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI)." The quote I chose here is basically saying that the intelligence is all about where you excel, not if you can. I think this is a perfect explanation because it's quick and from this person's own experiences. It makes me wonder if there is some truth to this theory despite some valid opposing views. I suppose it's all what you make out of it.
