      WoW is a roleplaying game.
    • Jessica =D

      Indeed. I concur with thee.
    • William Utama

its a massive multiplayer role playing in short mmorpg i love playing mmorpg :3 yeahh i jus wanna take up space :D
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Game creators consider seasons and the game has room for upgrading.
  • In it, players design a character to play based on a number of starting options, such as the race of character and its type or class.
    • Tian EWSIS

I like that players can design their own charactors.
    • Andrea. C

yea, it sounds like it's funner if the game has different jobs to play
    • Chun Heng EWSIS

it is the top online game throughout the wolrd =)
    • Ammy EWSIS

There are many games similar to this.. such as maple story, flyff, ragnorak... its nothing new. The only thing good about WoW is the graphics and the fact that they update the game every single week. I'm rather tired of kinds of games because all you do is level and fight. It got pretty boring to me.
    • diane ewsis

this is for the whole paragraph the combat seems so interesting
    • JustinM EWSIS

its hard to find a mmorpg that doesnt have a character design feature unless it is really crappy or low quality even then its still hard to find one thats well known
    • Hannah EWSIS

I agree with Justin almost all have character design features.
    • Anna EWSIS

Yeah I know what you mean ammy. At first I was addicted to MS but all i did was level and fight. It bored me.
    • Michael Harris

I like that fact that you can obtain a character based on race
    • Noreen C

Why is it so important to have a character design? I mean I get it when a person picks what character they want to be, but why do you need to pick the color of their hair, or race?
  • ...117 more annotations...
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Explains environment, possible interaction with international people.
  • a player then has four to seven of the game's ten character classes to choose from
    • YuDi EWSIS

Not all ten players can be used.
    • Zhapa EWSIS

      so true
    • Tian EWSIS

Also it needs a minimum level in order to choose a hero class. This gives players motivation to keep playing until they reach the levels they need.
    • Jose EWSIS

      personality affects outcome of characters.
    • Jeannie EWSIS

i love games like those ^
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

How to make a character. Alliance or Horde? Different "races" available.
  • Season
  • The game has three roles, DPS (damage dealer), tank and healer, a member of any class can be customized for the DPS role, while members of some classes, known as hybrids, can also be customized as healers, tanks or any of the three roles.
    • YuDi EWSIS

The different classes makes the game funner.
    • Jessica =D

Also helps to play. You need a healer to heal your party and the such.
    • William Utama

ofcourse if people have the classes it will be boring~~
    • Hawa EWSIS

Hmm...I hate being a healer though...healers are boring in my opinion.
    • JustinM EWSIS

every game has different jobs so that there is a varaity in the gameplay and for obsesive people who wish to have all the classes to have a little more fun
    • Shehrina EWSIS

      Classes makes it more interesting.
    • Andrea. C

LOL really? I hate being tanks. no fun
  • Azeroth
    • Helen EWSIS

that's a weird name... I wonder what the meaning of it is, if there is any?
    • Jordan EWSIS

who comes up with thes names
    • Andrea. C

many MMORPG have their own world to draw players in. makes every game special in their own way
    • jsmith4

      seems alright
    • MelissaB EWSIS

who every comes up with these names really has no life or has one hell of a imagination
    • diane ewsis

      cool name
    • Jeannie EWSIS

      the names sound coool
    • Hannah EWSIS

I really like the names they are quite creative and interesting.
    • Sarah B

i think it is titled world of warcraft because this is an alternate world where people are learning the art of war, or how to make war/fight in wars.
    • Yuval S

Helen, i think that there is also a meaning to this weird name
    • Kim T

I'm guessing the name is either something in another language or gibberish.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Each character is assigned a role at your decision. Play in a group or individually.
  • Players can also participate in player versus player combat, either in large groups or small team matches.
    • Helen EWSIS

I find this to be very typical in all kinds of games.
    • Houin EWSIS

It is a good way for the character go to the PvP and have match with other player.
    • Jordan EWSIS

how meny difernt conpons are there
    • Yuval S

      I agree with you Helen.
  • These are indicated by having yellow exclamation marks (!) above their heads, while yellow question marks (?) represent quests ready to hand back and complete.[26] Quests usually reward the player with experience points and in-game money
    • YuDi EWSIS

Many games usually allow players make their own groups.
    • Hawa EWSIS

Hmm the yellow questions I have seen in other games for quests and stuff....
  • al and periodical events have also been added, such as Halloween, Midsummer and weekly fishing competitions
    • Tian EWSIS

Although it's in a fictional world, there are still realistic things, such as Halloween. This makes the game more attractive and interesting.
    • Houin EWSIS

i agree with you,the game will following the real holiday and create some activitly or quest about the holiday.
    • Andrea. C

Yea, I think when there's events like these, people get drawn in because they get rare items or whatever
    • MelissaB EWSIS

I think that this is giving people a excuse to be anti social and have no life why talk to real people or go outside when there is a whole vertual reality the mirrors the real world.
    • Shehrina EWSIS

I agree too. holidays always makes pepole happy and when there favorite holidays are in the game its more interesting.
    • Yuval S

I agree, I like the idea of putting special things for special events.
    • Noreen C

But isn't one of the main attractions of video games to put people in an alternate world? I, in fact, don't think the game is very realistic. The whole idea of fantasy is what is so different from real world. I think that's what is most appealing.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Professions are different from roles. You can actually get useful skills fit for that profession.
  • Characters can be resurrected by other characters that have the ability, or can self-resurrect by moving from the graveyard to the place where they died.
  • To start, players select a game realm or server to play on.
  • Each realm is in one of four different categories, depending on which set of combat rules it uses.
    • Tian EWSIS

The main goal of the game is to defeat monsters and complete the mission, which is very similar to the one that I used to be playing.
  • players are mainly focused on defeating monsters and completing quests (Player versus environment)
    • Helen EWSIS

      option 1
    • Houin EWSIS

most of the game need to do the same thing going to up lvl.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

A "guild" is like a club for players.
  • open combat between players is permitted (Player versus player)
    • Helen EWSIS

      option 2
    • MelissaB EWSIS

player verses enviorment what the hell is that I think it is more sane to do player verses player I won't go coocoo.
  • Enhancing a character's reputation can gain access to rare items, unique abilities and profession-based patterns and plans,[29] as well as lowering cost of items sold by NPCs belonging to that faction
    • YuDi EWSIS

This kind RPG game should be online game.
    • diane ewsis

An Npc is it like a potion?
  • Players are also able to customize their character through the use of talents, which are further abilities related to their character class.[9][10]
    • Munaza EWSIS

This sound fun, and very engaging becasue people can can create characters depending the person.
  • roleplay versions of both these types, where players are encouraged to control their character as if they were an inhabitant of a fantasy world
    • Helen EWSIS

I can't imagine someone getting so in to the game... but I guess it's fairly normal also. How do you do that? o_o
    • Luis EWSIS

This sounded like Sims, but it would be interesting to have this combination of battle and civil life
    • Shehrina EWSIS

People get addicted to a game. And when they are playing their favorite video games they have no idea about whats going on around them.
    • Jeannie EWSIS

I think this game sounds pretty fun.. I used to like roleplaying games
    • Yuval S

A lot of people go ODE about the game. you will if you also play
    • Noreen C

This does sound like Sims, however it is more fantasy. I guess it's what someone wants to get out of the game. I think that the idea of going on hunts and the whole monsters and dragons thing makes it very different than Sims.
  • In one of the updates following the release of the Burning Crusade expansion, the rate at which characters gain experience from killing monsters was increased, along with reducing the amount of experience required to gain further skills and abilities.
    • YuDi EWSIS

By accumulate experiences can make players beat boss.
  • Race determines the character's appearance, starting location, and initial skill set, called "racial traits".
    • Tian EWSIS

"Racial traits" does not only determine the appearance of each charactor, but also affect their skills in combat. I like how this is designed.
  • Characters are also able to learn two primary professions from a list of ten. These can be gathering professions, such as mining, herb gathering, or animal skinning. Characters can also choose from crafting professions, such as blacksmithing, leatherworking, or enhancement professions such as enchanting or inscription.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Different areas added because of new editions. Objective is to earn experience points to level up and become better. There is communication through text chat. While traveling, one could ride a boat or a plane.
    • diane ewsis

      cool 3-D
    • diane ewsis

There should be airplanes that could transport them to places faster
  • language players are encouraged to use, offering in-game support in that language
  • This allows players to explore areas and defeat quests without other players outside the group interfering.
    • YuDi EWSIS

Players get together to defeat the boss.
    • Kim T

How can players interfere one another? Is there only one dungeon?
  • Gameplay of World of Warcraft
    • Jordan EWSIS

who spent the time to wright this
    • JustinM EWSIS

this game iv heard of many times and it is suppose to be a good game however i find that it gets extremely tedious really fast and it gets boring after time which is good for a game that you piad for and have to keep paying for in order to play it
    • Jose EWSIS

World of Warcraft is a place where people can leave their everyday lives and live a "cooler" much perfered life to escape reality. It is here where a great world of interaction occurs and technology truely shines as we see it in action.
    • Helen EWSIS

This is really interesting... GLOBAL APPROACH?
    • Dylan EWSIS

I can see how people get addicted because they dont want to miss out on any extra priviledges so they buy all the extra game packs ot keep up to date with the game.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Includes holiday-based events and uses weather effects. How sentimental.
  • A typical dungeon will allow up to five characters to enter as part of a group.
    • YuDi EWSIS

Group players makes the game easier.
    • diane ewsis

do you have to have group players
    • Ammy EWSIS

i agree. Teamwork makes everything a lot easier because 5 heads are better than 1 !
    • Andrea. C

Yup, but the more people you have, the slower you're going to lvl
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

General idea of questing. Awards and experience points are given after completing a quest.
  • As well as banding together to form groups, players can also band together to form guilds. These structures allow players several benefits, such as easier communication and an identifying guild name and tabard. Guild members can also be given access to a central pool of resources known as a guild bank.[13] Guilds can also make use of an in-game calendar, allowing guild members to view scheduled events, and respond to them with whether they can attend or not. This calendar can also be accessed without need to log-in to the game, using the Armory feature.[14]
    • Munaza EWSIS

      yop
  • Characters can only communicate and group with other characters of the same faction. Each faction has five races to choose from. Race determines the character's appearance, starting location, and initial skill set, called "racial traits".
    • Helen EWSIS

      CHALLENGE for the players...
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

This paragraph explains the types of quests. Death happens but characters can be brought back to life.
  • As well as dungeon-based raid challenges, several creatures exist in the normal game environment that are designed for raids to attack.
    • YuDi EWSIS

The background music and photo makes players interesting in the game.
    • diane ewsis

do you have to go into a dungeons with a group you can't go in by urself
  • Death Knights are a hero class, which means the player needs a level 55 (at least) and they start at level 55 with many skills, abilities, weapons and armor. While a character can be played on its own, players can also group up with others in order to tackle more challenging content. In this way, character classes are used in specific roles within a group
    • Houin EWSIS

different class character have different skill, if your lvl is higher, then the class will more high, and the you will hagve more skill
  • The Alliance currently consists of Humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Draenei; the Horde currently consists of Orcs, Tauren, Forsaken, Trolls and Blood Elves.
    • Helen EWSIS

      too many terms...!
    • Houin EWSIS

most of the game have 2 different alliance,it will make the game more interest and fun.
    • Luis EWSIS

I wonder what happened to the dead hordes
  • In common with many MMORPGs, World of Warcraft requires players to pay for a subscription, usually either by credit-card or by buying a card from a retailer to redeem for a pre-determined amount of subscription time.[15]
    • Houin EWSIS

it is very expersive.some MMORPGs is free.:)
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

This paragraph shows that one can improve "reputation." There are rare abilities available.
  • Further options to customize the appearance, such as hairstyles, skin tones, etc are also available.
    • Helen EWSIS

REALLY? I thought that was just in games that "dress up" their characters as opposed to fictionous animated characters.
    • diane ewsis

For the paragraph What can't you change
  • Players can discover 'flight masters' in newly discovered locations and then use those NPCs in order to fly to previously discovered locations in other parts of the world.[19
  • As well as banding together to form groups, players can also band together to form guilds.
    • Tian EWSIS

Players can interact with each other, which makes the game more fun. The players can also share experience with each other.
  • Depending on the race chosen and the expansions installed, a player then has four to seven of the game's ten character classes to choose from.
    • Helen EWSIS

I'm a little confused... based on whatever they choose before, they then choose another character classes??
    • Houin EWSIS

the game only have 3 main character, after up lvl,it can upgrade to other character.
  • Gameplay primarily consists of completing quests and dungeon runs, and other in-game activities, in order to obtain rewards which will allow one to improve one's character and equipment in order to be able to complete the more difficult quests and dungeon runs.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Overall, I am very bored of this lesson and feel that this is pointless because I really don't care about the history or explanation of the "Gameplay of World of Warcraft." Plus, this game is rather boring and makes me not want to play. Great.
    • Kim T

I agree. The game seems really confusing and pointless. I don't find it necessary to learn about a fantasy world that isn't really interesting or beneficial.

    • Luis EWSIS

      What are these skills for?
  • n this game world, players use their characters to explore locations, defeat creatures and complete quests.
    • Tian EWSIS

Players have to explore locations themselves. That means the plot is not determined by the game and it will leave the players more to imagine.
    • Ammy EWSIS

I like exploring in games especially when the game has very good graphics.
    • JustinM EWSIS

same old style of gameplay lols
  • Although the game world remains reasonably similar from day to day, changes have been made over time. Seasonal events that reflect on real world events such as Halloween (as Hallow's End),[23] Christmas (as Winter Veil), Children's Week,[24] Easter (as Noblegarden) and Midsummer run for a period of a day or two up to several weeks.
  • Gameplay primarily consists of completing quests and dungeon runs, and other in-game activities, in order to obtain rewards which will allow one to improve one's character and equipment in order to be able to complete the more difficult quests and dungeon runs.
    • Andrea. C

makes the game interesting when there's a goal for you
    • MelissaB EWSIS

The many quest can get boring if there is no one singular goal of enemy to defeat and you whined up giving up.
    • Jeannie EWSIS

I agree. completing small quests in order to achieve the big gaol
  • in-game calendar

Wow! this game really doe shave everything!
  • First, some realms allow player versus player combat to take place almost anywhere in the game world outside of areas for new players.
    • YuDi EWSIS

The system of players vs players makes the game in touch with the real world. Players vs. real players in the game.
    • diane ewsis

There too many points in this game
  • This calendar can also be accessed without need to log-in to the game, using the Armory feature.

  • Each battleground has a set objective, such as capturing a flag or defeating an opposing general, that must be completed in order to win the battleground.

    • JustinM EWSIS

LOL helen. You can die. You just respawn at the nearest respawning point. And you also lose exp which is a total ...
  • As well as being able to complete quests and enter dungeons, players can also fight against other players in the game.
  • When a character dies the items being carried degrade, requiring in-game money and a specialist NPC to repair them. Items that degrade heavily can become unusable until they are repaired.

      never mind... you can die!
  • These locations act in a similar way to dungeons or instances in that only a set number of characters can enter a single battleground, but additional copies of the battleground can be made to accommodate additional players.[34]

I think voice chat is awesome because you can continue to walk around without having ot stop and type. Its much easier to talk while you're hunting. many games have this feature right now which is awesome.
  • Arenas are a further development to player vs player that were added in the Burning Crusade expansion
  • High end dungeons allow more players to group together and form a raid. These dungeons allow up to forty players to enter at a time in order to face some of the most difficult challenges.[33] In the Burning Crusade expansion the most common group sizes are ten and twenty-five,[32] based on the idea that these groups would be easier to fill and coordinate.[32] As well as dungeon-based raid challenges, several creatures exist in the normal game environment that are designed for raids to attack.[20][23] [edit]

One of the most discussed issues in American sports today is the current bowl system in college football. Majority of the Americans, especially fans, favor on having a playoff, just like in every other sports leagues, to determine a National Champion, rather than having multiple Bowl games. According to survey conducted by Quinnipiac University, 63 percent favor a playoff system while getting rid of the current system. Only 26 percent favor on keeping the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) system. Even the President of our nation, Barack Obama favors a playoff system in college football. This issue was even involved in the U.S. Congress. The House was planning on passing a legislation to remove the current BCS system and implement a playoffs to decide a National Champion. However, 48 percent of the fans do not think it's a good idea for Congress to get involved with this, while 45 percent do. The Congress hasn't done anything yet. I personally believe that the Congress should stay out of this and worry about much more important government issues. What exactly is the BCS? It is a selection process that creates five bowl games that matches up the top 10 ranked teams in the nation. The Number 1 and 2 ranked teams in the nation are matched up for the BSC National Championship game. The other teams are subjected to other BCS bowl games which are, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona and the Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens, Florida. From the season when the BCS was created, the National Championship game rotated among the 4 bowls. Saving the World Through Game Design : The New Yorker - 0 views

"Jane McGonigal talks with Daniel Zalewski about alternate-reality gaming. From "Stories from the Near Future," the 2008 New Yorker Conference."
  •
"Can the alllure of gameplay be a force that draws people together?" Mcgonigal talks about massively multiplay gaming. She believes that instead of building games that are very different from the reality, she wants to build reality within the games. She starts off by telling the history of game and the father of games, herotitus. She saids that the core focus in game play is to engage yourself within the system. She also states that she believes that people play games because when they're playing a game, they're not suffering. I think this is true because people feel happy when they play a game that they like. Whenever I'm bored and unhappy, I go to my computer and start playing one of my favorite games. I really like the examples that she gives. One of the examples is world of warcraft. Tons of people play this game and wish that it were to become true because people online are so much more cooperative than people in reality. Before watching this video, I never thought about this kind of stuff before. I've always wondered what kinds of new games they would create since games are starting to become boring. I think that there should be more reality games instead of make believes so that we can learn from those games to live a better life. We can treat those games as personal trainers. I think that it would benefit many people because because there is a high percentage attraction towards games.
  •
Well right know, we are learning about gaming. I never really thought about the new technology that's going to be produce for gaming since I always really just thought about the games. I do wonder though what kind of technology would be produced. I hope it's pretty cool though like one of those future movies excluding the part where it takes over humans....I rather not be running around with little robots chasing me. Yeah, that really doesn't sound to appealing "This is ancient dice from the kingdom Lydia where Turkey is today. They used knuckle bones like from sheep to make dice." I find the dice very interesting. I really can't imagine the dice being formed from knuckle bones. I wonder how they do it. I'm going to guess that they used fire and pressure to form it? Not really sure, it's probably going to be similar to that I guess. "A future forecast: 2013. We increasingly live our real lives inside of massively multiplayer games." I find that pretty interesting for the fact of its 2010 and it kind of like that now. I mean people are playing massively multiplayer games even today. Mostly online. I think by 2013 something of what she's talking about will appear. It'll probably from Asia and it can be like that future movie where people live in a 3D world. They're like hooked onto machines and stuff. That would be interesting. Maybe dangerous.

Video game behavioral effects - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • From both a social and psychological standpoint, video games have the ability to influence their players both on implicit and explicit levels.
    • Hawa EWSIS

What does it mean when it says both on implicit and explicit levels?
  • Research on aggressive behavior as an effect of playing violent video games began in the 1980s and 1990s and still continues today.
    • Hawa EWSIS

This is seen a lot in our society today. Many people who are video game addicts exhibit this behavior.
  • some researchers claim that these violent games may cause more intense feelings of aggression than nonviolent games, and may trigger feelings of anger and hostility. Several studies that have supported such findings.
    • Hawa EWSIS

as one can see at the bottom of this, there is another article supporting this theory.
  • ...12 more annotations...
  • The average gamer, far from being a teen, is actually a 35-year-old man who is overweight, aggressive, introverted — and often depressed, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).[4]
    • Hawa EWSIS

Woah, that is actually really surprising. I thought that the average gamer was a teenager not a 35 year old man
  • Female video game characters are often hypersexualized and unrealistic,[8][9] and have been shown to play a factor in hard-core gamers’ perceptions of ideal beauty
    • Hawa EWSIS

this is really true since when I play some video games the girls are so unrealistic with huge breasts and all that. It actually makes me feel ugly all the time compared to them.
  • This repetition of violence and reward system create a psychological effect on people telling them that violence is okay.
    • Hawa EWSIS

Is that people commit murders and stuff? This it because of huge influence of the video games?
  • This addiction could lead to physical health problems, spending problems, and time displacement leading to missed work or school days. In one example, a 28 year old South Korean gamer died after 50 hours of StarCraft online gameplay.[12]
    • Hawa EWSIS

I know that video game addiction can make someone socially awkward, but can it really make someone die? Somebody should really go into that....
  • The rise in childhood obesity in the U.S. has raised awareness of media consumption in children.[citation needed] Not only are parents and organizations blaming the food industry for the problem, but they are turning to television and video games as a key factor. Displacement Theory supports the notion that the time that would normally be spent being active outdoors or in sports, children are now replacing with leisure and inactive time in front of the television.[citation needed] Others tend the blame the problem on parental enforcement.[citation needed]
    • Hawa EWSIS

In short, parents are just blaming video games for their child being overweight. Why would blame others? It's their fault in my opinion since it's the parents that give children access to video games and other things....
  • Anderson and Bushman explain how violent video games promote violent behavior, attitudes and beliefs.
  • have written that video games are neither good or bad alone, because it all depends on the individual and the context they are played in.[18]
    • Hawa EWSIS

I have to agree for the fact that it all does depend on the person. They all have different effects on someone even though sometimes they share the same effects.
  • The interactive nature allows for high levels of entertainment, but has not yet been shown to subtract from the educational lessons being taught. Additionally, developers are beginning to change the view of traditional video games by creating popular games that require the player to be active -Wii Fit, Dance Dance Revolution- or focus on using brain power -Brain Age 2.
    • Hawa EWSIS

see....a lot of people tend to think that video games is coupled with laziness and being unhealthy. However there are someone games that help become active and some that requires brain power. So video games aren't always that bad.
  • Many authors disagree with the notion that suggests that the media can cause violence, they think that media cannot cause violence because human can recognize what is wrong and what is right and people are not copycats
    • Hawa EWSIS

Well this can be true at times. It is usually built in someone that tells them what is wrong or not. However, what if it's a child who plays the violent games. They're so young that they might not know what is wrong or right...
  • Journalist and author, David Sheff, believes that many skills can be learned from the gaming experience, it builds practical and intellectual skills,” by playing video games children gain problem solving abilities, perseverance, pattern recognition, hypothesis testing, estimating skills, inductive skills, resources management, logistics mapping, memory, quick thinking and reasonal judgements”. [26]
    • Hawa EWSIS

This can be true at times. However I don't really agree with the reasonal judgements. It depends on the person really.
  • There are many positive effects of video games on some people as suggested by some researches; people play because they want to get away from their everyday life, break routine, to relive stress, allow them to cool off when they are stressful, could help people take out their anger through the game rather in real life because they are fun and interesting way to spend time. [25]
    • Hawa EWSIS

This is true, because you can get lost in the world of whatever game you are playing. You can become another character and just be someone else for a while. Also it's sort of a hea;thy way to release stress instead of surpressing it.
  • In research undertaken by Acta Psychologica, in a number of tasks, video game experts outperformed non-gamers. Experts were able to track objects moving at greater speeds, perform more accurately in a visual short-term memory test, switch between tasks more quickly, and make decisions about rotated objects more quickly and accurately.
    • Hawa EWSIS

Well this is sort of true too since I experience something like this once. I think it does help hand eye coordination at times...

This is important, you need to know the history of the platforms.
  • In common use a "PC game" refers to a form of media that involves a player interacting with a personal computer connected to a high-resolution video monitor. A "console game" is played on a specialized electronic device that connects to a standard television set or composite video monitor. A "handheld" gaming device is a self contained electronic device that is portable and can be held in a user's hands. "Arcade game" generally refers to a game played on an even more specialized type of electronic device that is typically designed to play only one game and is encased in a special cabinet.

this quote referenced a different type of gamer, the casual gamer. This qupte is completely true. Most games that come out are "core" games, they require (well most of the time) a lot of effort to complete. Casual gamers usually play games to relax, not to play for the action.

TED 2010: Reality Is Broken. Game Designers Must Fix It | Epicenter | Wired.com - 2 views

I'm looking into Jane McGonigal's work around ARG's - Alternate Reality Games. In particular I'm wondering how playing one of these games changes the way people interact because they are thinking differently. This is what McGonigal has to say about such changes: "Games, when you play them with other people, … actually strengthen the reward circuitry so it actually makes people more social and more likely to collaborate because their brains are actually more responsive to people online and offline. Games are transforming the brains of people who play them in largely positive ways." She is saying that by playing a game, we adopt a role and use our brains differently. This expands what is possible in our brains, and has impacts on what we do in life after we are finished playing the games. And this is what games should do: change how we live our lives when the games aren't there. Like art helps us see differently, games should help us live by different rules, recognize different systems than we saw before playing the game.

Recently gaming has been coming up everywhere! I was listening to Jay Rosen and Dave Winer's podcast, "Rebooting the News." Rosen reported on his panel at South by Southwest. He said that at the end he twittered about how interested he had become about looking at the intersection of gaming and journalism. Rosen also mentioned that they had set up a webset for their Future of Context panel. I went looking and I found a post about gaming and journalism that includes these paragraphs about how gaming might bring context into journalism. "The way I envision it is to create some sort of social gaming experience that fills in the gaps. Want to fill the audience in on why health care costs so much? Why not an audience scavenger hunt that takes them through insurance companies, doctors, service providers, employers who pay premiums, and such? Or why not a Farmville type of game run in a hospital where users have to try and actually bend the cost curve themselves lest they go bankrupt, a situation that allows them to experiment with different health care systems so they can see the cause and effect of the choices we make as a society (in terms of patient coverage, costs, profits, etc? If Mafia Wars on Facebook can take off, surely this could. And how do they make these choices along the way? With blasts of information, ideally pulled from well reported news stories, that the user can actually apply to the situation in a way that increases both recall and understanding." Littau is presenting his vision here, and what a fvision it is. I can totally imagine playing a game in place of reading an article about health care. Once again, just when I thought I understood what gaming is, I see that there is more to learn. This is exciting!

Alternate Reality Game 'EVOKE' Uses Gamers to Change the World - Asylum.com - 1 views

  • In "EVOKE," you're leveling up in world-changing superpowers like creativity and resourcefulness. You're unlocking achievements by completing real social innovation missions. Even though much of the game material is real and important and serious, you get the motivational push of game dynamics and the rewards and satisfactions of making real progress. Plus, it's a social network, and once you start making friends with other players, there's all the social stickiness that involves."

I spent my whole Saturday morning working with 5 of the best educators I know. We're bringing gaming into the classroom. Once Suzie Boss pointed me to Jane McGonigal, I became a follower. So yeah, can I put follow McGonigal for Act1 in Evoke? Why not? After all she says things like this: "In "EVOKE," you're leveling up in world-changing superpowers like creativity and resourcefulness. You're unlocking achievements by completing real social innovation missions. Even though much of the game material is real and important and serious, you get the motivational push of game dynamics and the rewards and satisfactions of making real progress. Plus, it's a social network, and once you start making friends with other players, there's all the social stickiness that involves." In this quote, you can see that McGonigal is attempting to bring together the power connective powers of social network with the addictive and motivational mechanisms of games. Plus it's all about doing REAL missions, missions in real life. I'm still not sure that my students will see the connections between their addictions and the learning/doing/re-wiring that McGonigal is aiming for in Evoke. I'm not sure, but I've been VERY impressed so far with how Evoke feels, and I've been seeing that the gamers in my classroom are the first to "get" this game. I want to learn more about McGonigal now, because it gives me more confidence that she is up to something with Evoke, that it has the power of a massively multiplayer online game and the seriousness of a political action social network.

Basketball Rules and How To Play The Game - 0 views

  • Women's basketball began in 1892 at Smith College when Senda Berenson, a physical education teacher, modified Naismith's rules for women

this is something that i didnt even know, i thought womans basketball was created much later.
  • Dribbling, the bouncing of the ball up and down while moving, was not part of the original game except for the "bounce pass" to teammates. Passing the ball was the primary means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the asymmetric shape of early balls. Dribbling only became a major part of the game around the 1950s as manufacturing improved the ball shape.

So before the traveling rule was inforced, ball players would just run with the ball without bouncing the ball, im glad they changed that rule because it would be too easy to actually score and move the ball back and forth.
  • Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball

Im learning more about college basketball and basketball in general, and what i am particulary wondering about is how different was the sport then (in 1891) to now. I was reasearching this question online and this blog post caught my attension because it explains the history of the game. "After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, so balls scored into the basket had to be poked out with a long dowel each time. A soccer ball was used to shoot goals. Whenever a person got it in the basket, they would give their team a point. Whoever got the most points, they would win the game.[2]" The quote I chose here is showing how the game evolved over many years. When the game was first created the basket was very different from the ones we have today, along with the basketball and some of the rules. Now everything is completly different but for the better. There are gyms, parks, rec centers a lot of different places all over the world where people can play the game for fun of try to actually make it a career. Before it was just something to do to get kids off the streets, now it has perks. Scholarships are given out, and many are getting paid millions of dollars to play the game. I think this is a perfect blog about the game then and now because a lot of people can really learn from this. It makes me wonder if people really know the complete history behind the sport even college and NBA players.

Why the explosion of social games excites veteran developers | Geek Gestalt - CNET News - 0 views

"On the other hand, Smith said that any game developer trying to build a game that attracts audiences around the world would do well to concentrate on proper localization. Mistakes that have annoyed regional audiences, Smith said, have included one social game offering virtual goods timed for Christmas that didn't make sense to South Americans because they featured snow-oriented scenes. "

"Still, it may not matter whether developers consider social games to be bona fide games, Reynolds said. Rather, succeeding in the Facebook era may mean learning a lot more about social interactions than about game mechanics. "The magic is in the social interactions," Reynolds said. "And so we have to devise game mechanics that are very, very light...get the social right, and then work on the game mechanics."

For Naismith, Basketball Was Only a Start - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
I'm learning more about college basketball, and how and when it was created. What i am really interested in knowing more about is, what made James Naismith (the founder of the game) come up with such an idea? What made him decide one day to take a basket and throw something inside of it and make it a big sport. I decided to research my questions online and this one article in the NY Times caught my attention because it explained why he created the game. I chose the article i did because, what better way to find out more about the game then finding out more about the person that started it. "James Naismith and his wife, Maude, practicing basketball, a game he invented in 1891 as a way to keep rowdy students busy during winter." The quote i chose above basically is explaining James Naismith's reason for creating the sport and who he created it for. He wanted to get the kids that had nothing to do and were going down bad roads to discover the game and get interested in it. Over a winter break or a vacation instead of doing something destructive, they could go and play this sport. I think this is perfect because the game was invented in 1891 and still exists in 2009. It is my favorite sport and has changed a lot over time. It went from using an actual peach basket with no hole in the bottom to having metal rims with nets. The game has evolved into something great and with never go away.

7 Steps to Better Handwriting - TigerPens Blog - 0 views

"WORK ON YOUR MANUAL DEXTERITY Researchers in the UK found that children improved their handwriting by playing games that increased their hand-eye coordination. Practice tying knots, shuffling cards, pen spinning or anything else that strengthens fine motor control. Even video games can help - according to a US study, surgeons who play video games are less prone to make errors. If it can help them with something that delicate, it certainly can improve your handwriting." so technically me practicing pen spinning will help me in college but a thing that stood out to me in the paragraph was that hand to eye reaction games can greatly improve your skill in all the things listed in the paragraph which is great because i play a game called DJ Max which is like DDR for your fingers but much harder so now that i know playing these games can help im going to play a lot more

In Kobe Bryant's estimation, the Lakers are doing just fine -- latimes.com - 0 views

"Kobe Bryant is always looking for something to improve, something to fix, some way to gain an edge, part of what drives him to be, well, Kobe Bryant. But he seemed satisfied when asked whether there was anything the Lakers could be doing better these days. "Not really," he said. "We are doing well." The Lakers (16-3) have won nine consecutive games, eight with Pau Gasol back in the lineup, and their only close call came against Miami, when Bryant's 27-foot three-point basket at the buzzer prevented a loss. Coach Phil Jackson gave the starters and Lamar Odom a day off after the Lakers throttled the Phoenix Suns on Sunday for the second time in a month. Their reserves were required to report to the team training facility and do some light work Monday, but the only thing staring uncomfortably at the Lakers is the end of the home-friendly part of their schedule. They have two more games at Staples Center before hitting the road, finally, for five games. Beyond that, there's really no reason to complain. Victories against Utah on Wednesday and Minnesota on Friday would give them their longest winning streak since they won 11 in a row toward the end of the 2003-04 season. "We've got the best record in the league and we want to keep it that way," Gasol said. "It's just the first quarter of the regular season. We've still got a long ways to go. We understand that we've had a lot of home games this first part of the season and that it's going to get complicated and a lot harder. So we have to be ready for it." Seventeen of the Lakers' first 21 games will have been at Staples Center before they play Saturday at Utah. They will then fly home for two days before heading back out for a four-game trip to Chicago, Milwaukee, New Jersey and Detroit."

  • The two learning situations that I have chosen to observe in this project are the teaching of children in a daycare and the use of video games to teach children. Both of these situations are considered two different agents of socialization. The teaching of children in a daycare is classified as the school agent and the video games teaching children are considered a form of the mass media agent. These two socialization agents fall within the childhood stage of socialization. Although the two learning situations use different agents of socialization, they both help to teach important cognitive development skills, motor skills, and the development of “how to” thinking.

I think this is important because It made me wonder that video game is way more that just entertament, it can be a way or teachinh. Because children can some time learn more from video games, good or bad information.

Meet the Gamers - 4/15/2005 - Library Journal - 1 views

"Why pay attention to games? For starters, games are the "medium of choice" for many Millennials, with broad participation among the 30 and under population. Although part of a web of new media, technology, and social shifts, games are the quintessential site for examining these changes. Game cultures feature participation in a collective intelligence, blur the distinction between the production and consumption of information, emphasize expertise rather than status, and promote international and cross-cultural media and communities. Most of these characteristics are foreign, or run counter to print-era institutions such as libraries. At the same time, game cultures promote various types of information literacy, develop information seeking habits and production practices (like writing), and require good, old-fashioned research skills, albeit using a wide spectrum of content. In short, librarians can't afford to ignore gamers."
