UNICEF - Afghanistan - Promoting girls' empowerment through sport in Afghanistan - 1 views

  • UNICEF and the YICC have created a girls’ volleyball, hockey and football team – the latter has 16 members and is affiliated with the Afghanistan Football Federation – with the goal of engaging girls in community development and peace-building.

Right now, I'm learning about Women's Rights in different countries. I actually don't know a place from the top of my head that doesn't have equality for women. It makes me think how would my life be different today, if I was in one of those countries with no equality at all for women. I really think it would be really horrible and I can't imagine not having equality. It's like a nightmare almost... "The female football players in Bamyan have various plans for the future, from teacher to doctor, translator to painter. Once she completes her education, for example, Shekeba plans to become a police officer - "because so far, the policemen in Bamyan are not helping women when it is needed," she explains. " The quote I chose here is basically saying that Afghanistan doesn't have equality for women. The young girl here who says that women are not being helped by policemen is really interesting. I never thought they wouldn't...since police are suppose to...help everyone. I guess it just shows that women's equality is really important. I hope that women's rights is established in that country and others. I would take effort and it's little girls like that who dream to become something for the benefit of others that issues like this will be solved.

"In Bamyan, UNICEF has been working with the government since 2001 to support women's rights. Besides sport for girls and literacy classes for women, the agency supports local women's associations and works to raise awareness about gender equality at the family, community and district level."

I'm learning more about Girls/ Womens empowerment right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about this is how can you empower women or girls. I was researching this question online i came across this article. It caught my attention because the title is 'Promoting girls' empowerment through sport in Afghanistan.' It caught my attention because the title pretty much speaks for it's self. Girls can in fact be empowered through sports! This sparked my interest and so i began reading it. "Participation in sport is a critical part of any child's physical and social development, especially for girls. Sport can help to improve their self-esteem and self-awareness," says Dr. Atiqullah Amiri of UNICEF's Outpost Bamyan. "Sport teaches integrity and self-management by setting objective standards that girls can work to achieve." The quote I chose here is basically saying that sports can be a very big part of someones life. Sports can improve your overall self in many different ways. The ways in which are spoke about here is helping girls. It can improve their self-esteem and self-awareness, self-management and i believe it can build up great skills that can be put to use in everyday lives. Skills like team work, responsibility and so on. I think this is an very important fact. Sports can in fact help girls. It makes me wonder how powerful something can be, and how it can change something or someone like a sport. Like what is spoken about in this article.

Floyd Mayweather Junior title bout against Manny Pacquiao terms agreed : In Entertainment - 0 views

I'm learning more about boxing right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: Why is Boxing called a sport? I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because it shows that boxing is something very imporant now days, that their are many boxers that fight and end up being fanous. For example Many Pacquiao, he is an amazing fighter. I can say even better than Oscar DeLa Oya. But lets face it, Oscar is pretty old and can't fight no more due to his age. I blieve. The title of this post that caught my eye is called Intertainment. Something that stood out for me is that Manny is fighting Flyd Mayweather in March 13. Which I find it so INTERESTING!! I have to pay this to see it. It's going to be amazing. Knowing that Mayweather is an amazing fighter. The Best. But for me the best is Manny. http://mmazoo.blogspot.com/2009/12/boxing-elitists-dont-get-it.html Boxing is certainly more popular worldwide than MMA is, but you have to remember, the sport has a long history. Boxing has been reestablished for well over a hundred years, and have a pretty decent talent pool to dip into. The quote I chose here is basically saying that boxing is a sport where is mainly called hobby but it's where you show the people who is the best on this sport. Even though this sport is painful but many people enjoy it seeing it. I think is great. I think this is descriptive adjective because it makes me wonder if what will be the future boxing will it be the same as now or will it change in a way.

For Naismith, Basketball Was Only a Start - NYTimes.com - 0 views

I'm learning more about college basketball, and how and when it was created. What i am really interested in knowing more about is, what made James Naismith (the founder of the game) come up with such an idea? What made him decide one day to take a basket and throw something inside of it and make it a big sport. I decided to research my questions online and this one article in the NY Times caught my attention because it explained why he created the game. I chose the article i did because, what better way to find out more about the game then finding out more about the person that started it. "James Naismith and his wife, Maude, practicing basketball, a game he invented in 1891 as a way to keep rowdy students busy during winter." The quote i chose above basically is explaining James Naismith's reason for creating the sport and who he created it for. He wanted to get the kids that had nothing to do and were going down bad roads to discover the game and get interested in it. Over a winter break or a vacation instead of doing something destructive, they could go and play this sport. I think this is perfect because the game was invented in 1891 and still exists in 2009. It is my favorite sport and has changed a lot over time. It went from using an actual peach basket with no hole in the bottom to having metal rims with nets. The game has evolved into something great and with never go away.

Poll shows fans want to dump Bowl Championship Series, get playoff - ESPN - 0 views

  •
One of the most discussed issues in American sports today is the current bowl system in college football. Majority of the Americans, especially fans, favor on having a playoff, just like in every other sports leagues, to determine a National Champion, rather than having multiple Bowl games. According to survey conducted by Quinnipiac University, 63 percent favor a playoff system while getting rid of the current system. Only 26 percent favor on keeping the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) system. Even the President of our nation, Barack Obama favors a playoff system in college football. This issue was even involved in the U.S. Congress. The House was planning on passing a legislation to remove the current BCS system and implement a playoffs to decide a National Champion. However, 48 percent of the fans do not think it's a good idea for Congress to get involved with this, while 45 percent do. The Congress hasn't done anything yet. I personally believe that the Congress should stay out of this and worry about much more important government issues

I'm learning more about empowering women. I read an article a couple minutes ago on how women get empowered. One way that women get empowered is sports can make a difference, consisting of improving one's self esteem and self-control and so much more. I was looking for organizations that help women get empowered and this one caught my attention because it was what i was looking for. An organization that help empower women through sports. I honestly think that it is a wonderful thing that we can all be apart of. "The project will educate and empower 37 action teams and allow them to increase their capacity to make independent decisions and reduce vulnerability so as to produce self assertiveness and liberated women through sport. " The quote i chose here is basically introducing the project to the public and hopefully donator. This reminded me of the another article that i read a couple of minutes ago. You can see what i wrote by looking at my blog. The title of it is Learn 6. I think this is very nice. Hopefully this organization will get a lot of donations including yours. I donated already. It's for a good cause and it can make a difference. Can you ? http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/information-girls-aids-in-africa Make a difference.

Basketball Rules and How To Play The Game - 0 views

  • Women's basketball began in 1892 at Smith College when Senda Berenson, a physical education teacher, modified Naismith's rules for women
    • corey stanley

this is something that i didnt even know, i thought womans basketball was created much later.
  • Dribbling, the bouncing of the ball up and down while moving, was not part of the original game except for the "bounce pass" to teammates. Passing the ball was the primary means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the asymmetric shape of early balls. Dribbling only became a major part of the game around the 1950s as manufacturing improved the ball shape.
    • corey stanley

So before the traveling rule was inforced, ball players would just run with the ball without bouncing the ball, im glad they changed that rule because it would be too easy to actually score and move the ball back and forth.
  • Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball
  •
Im learning more about college basketball and basketball in general, and what i am particulary wondering about is how different was the sport then (in 1891) to now. I was reasearching this question online and this blog post caught my attension because it explains the history of the game. "After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, so balls scored into the basket had to be poked out with a long dowel each time. A soccer ball was used to shoot goals. Whenever a person got it in the basket, they would give their team a point. Whoever got the most points, they would win the game.[2]" The quote I chose here is showing how the game evolved over many years. When the game was first created the basket was very different from the ones we have today, along with the basketball and some of the rules. Now everything is completly different but for the better. There are gyms, parks, rec centers a lot of different places all over the world where people can play the game for fun of try to actually make it a career. Before it was just something to do to get kids off the streets, now it has perks. Scholarships are given out, and many are getting paid millions of dollars to play the game. I think this is a perfect blog about the game then and now because a lot of people can really learn from this. It makes me wonder if people really know the complete history behind the sport even college and NBA players.

Basketball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 1 views

  • Before widespread school district consolidation, most United States high schools were far smaller than their present day counterparts. During the first decades of the 20th century, basketball quickly became the ideal interscholastic sport due to its modest equipment and personnel requirements. In the days before widespread television coverage of professional and college sports, the popularity of high school basketball was unrivaled in many parts of America. Perhaps the most legendary of high school teams was Indiana's Franklin Wonder Five, which took the nation by storm during the 1920s, dominating Indiana basketball and earning national recognition.
    • corey stanley

High school basketball went from this big popular sporting event before the tv broadcasting and before it became widespread to schools not having teams at all. Big transformation
  • The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium on January 20, 1892 with nine players. The game ended at 1-0; the shot was made from 25 feet (7.6 m), on a court just half the size of a present-day Streetball or National Basketball Association (NBA) court. By 1897–1898 teams of five became standard.
    • corey stanley

In todays game there is no way a game could end with a score of 1-0. That shows how much the game has really transformed over the course of time.
  • After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, and balls had to be retrieved manually after each "basket" or point scored; this proved inefficient, however, so a hole was drilled into the bottom of the basket, allowing the balls to be poked out with a long dowel each time.

Ex-NFL player says league is ducking mounting toll of head trauma -- baltimoresun.com - 0 views

  •
I'm learning more about sports and head trauma right now, and in particular what I'm wondering is: Why are concussions not taken seriously in the NFL? I was researching this question, and this news item caught my attention because is addresses my question. The title brought me to it. "A doctor examined Stein on the sideline and told him he might have a concussion. As was the custom at the time, he asked if Stein wanted to return to the game; as was the custom, Stein said yes. He had no idea he had a skull fracture until 15 years later, when a sinus infection slipped through the break and morphed into a near-fatal case of spinal meningitis." The quote that I chose here is basically saying that a football player came to the sidelines with symptoms of a concussion. The medical trainer came and told him that he has one, then asked him if he wanted to go back into the game. I think this is ridiculous because If someone has a concussion, they should not be permitted to return to the playing field. It makes me wonder if the player had died how the trainer would have reacted. What if he had been questioned by the press on why he handled it that way.

In Kobe Bryant's estimation, the Lakers are doing just fine -- latimes.com - 0 views

  •
"Kobe Bryant is always looking for something to improve, something to fix, some way to gain an edge, part of what drives him to be, well, Kobe Bryant. But he seemed satisfied when asked whether there was anything the Lakers could be doing better these days. "Not really," he said. "We are doing well." The Lakers (16-3) have won nine consecutive games, eight with Pau Gasol back in the lineup, and their only close call came against Miami, when Bryant's 27-foot three-point basket at the buzzer prevented a loss. Coach Phil Jackson gave the starters and Lamar Odom a day off after the Lakers throttled the Phoenix Suns on Sunday for the second time in a month. Their reserves were required to report to the team training facility and do some light work Monday, but the only thing staring uncomfortably at the Lakers is the end of the home-friendly part of their schedule. They have two more games at Staples Center before hitting the road, finally, for five games. Beyond that, there's really no reason to complain. Victories against Utah on Wednesday and Minnesota on Friday would give them their longest winning streak since they won 11 in a row toward the end of the 2003-04 season. "We've got the best record in the league and we want to keep it that way," Gasol said. "It's just the first quarter of the regular season. We've still got a long ways to go. We understand that we've had a lot of home games this first part of the season and that it's going to get complicated and a lot harder. So we have to be ready for it." Seventeen of the Lakers' first 21 games will have been at Staples Center before they play Saturday at Utah. They will then fly home for two days before heading back out for a four-game trip to Chicago, Milwaukee, New Jersey and Detroit."

  • Research on aggressive behavior as an effect of playing violent video games began in the 1980s and 1990s and still continues today.

This is seen a lot in our society today. Many people who are video game addicts exhibit this behavior.

Woah, that is actually really surprising. I thought that the average gamer was a teenager not a 35 year old man

  • The interactive nature allows for high levels of entertainment, but has not yet been shown to subtract from the educational lessons being taught. Additionally, developers are beginning to change the view of traditional video games by creating popular games that require the player to be active -Wii Fit, Dance Dance Revolution- or focus on using brain power -Brain Age 2.

see....a lot of people tend to think that video games is coupled with laziness and being unhealthy. However there are someone games that help become active and some that requires brain power. So video games aren't always that bad.
  • Many authors disagree with the notion that suggests that the media can cause violence, they think that media cannot cause violence because human can recognize what is wrong and what is right and people are not copycats

Well this can be true at times. It is usually built in someone that tells them what is wrong or not. However, what if it's a child who plays the violent games. They're so young that they might not know what is wrong or right...
  • Journalist and author, David Sheff, believes that many skills can be learned from the gaming experience, it builds practical and intellectual skills,” by playing video games children gain problem solving abilities, perseverance, pattern recognition, hypothesis testing, estimating skills, inductive skills, resources management, logistics mapping, memory, quick thinking and reasonal judgements”. This can be true at times. However I don't really agree with the reasonal judgements. It depends on the person really.
  • There are many positive effects of video games on some people as suggested by some researches; people play because they want to get away from their everyday life, break routine, to relive stress, allow them to cool off when they are stressful, could help people take out their anger through the game rather in real life because they are fun and interesting way to spend time. [25]

This is true, because you can get lost in the world of whatever game you are playing. You can become another character and just be someone else for a while. Also it's sort of a hea;thy way to release stress instead of surpressing it.
  • In research undertaken by Acta Psychologica, in a number of tasks, video game experts outperformed non-gamers. Experts were able to track objects moving at greater speeds, perform more accurately in a visual short-term memory test, switch between tasks more quickly, and make decisions about rotated objects more quickly and accurately.

Well this is sort of true too since I experience something like this once. I think it does help hand eye coordination at times...

I have been learning about women's rights at the moment. I actually stumbled on this article an article similar to this one before hand. This article was a previous one to the one I bookmarked before. I have been wondering though...What about the non believers?....I mean there are always people who don't believe the same thing as you and will discourage you from reaching your goals. ""My mother has been trying to discourage me from attending school since I have reached the age of being married," says Shekeba, a 15-year-old participant. "The exchange with my friends in the YICC has made me understand that we are all in a similar situation and that this cannot continue." " The quote I chose here kind of tells me about the people who disapprove of women's rights...even if they are women themselves. It's really interesting to see someone discourage something like that. I mean they're going to benefit from it too...so I don't get it kind of. I guess they just want things back to being what it usually was. I love it though how the girl in this article isn't going to listen to what her mom is disapproving and is following what she believes in. I think this is important for us, young people to do...since we are the future...

I am learning more about women rights right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: Is there still domestic violence? I was researching this question online, and this article caught my attention because it talks how women are being abuse around the world. "The girls on Bamyan's football team are between 12 and 20 years of age. All of them have experienced disrespect and violence at home." The quote i chose here is basically saying that at a very young age they are being abuse. I think this is wrong because everyone should have freedom. It makes me wonder if everyone is like this around the world. Domestic violence is a crime and that is wrong. The people who actually does this should put in jail.

  • Taking your heavy bags with you to Italy could be costly indeed -- even if the airline accepted them -- largely because of the difference between the so-called piece system baggage rule, which predominates in the United States and on flights between the United States and Europe, and the weight system, which is commonly used in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

      hm.
  • Airlines in general are adopting tougher baggage rules to keep fuel costs under control. British Airways, for example, no longer accepts any checked baggage over 32 kilograms (70.5 pounds), except for certain items, including musical instruments, electric wheelchairs and sporting equipment, that have not been approved and registered 24 hours in advance. Northwest and American have recently reduced their baggage allowances for coach class to about 50 pounds an item, down from 70 pounds.
