  • In my work at the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), one of my responsibilities is to help smallholder farmers adapt and create climate-resilient farming methods. Such knowledge exists but often fails to reach Africa's vast rural populations.

I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because the girl is sharing about her childhood in Zimbabwe, how to grow food. The expriences that she has is really interested me.

      I am currently learning about Africa's food security. I read this article "fighting for Africa's foo Security" by Sithembile Ndema. This article. Ms.Ndema speaks a bit about her child hood in Zimbabwe and how she would see her grandmother go to the same one acre plot of land each day, where she would work long hours growing crops. It is how she survived "This is how i wake up everyday, this is how i survive." " She continues to till her field with a hand hoe using seed saved from previous harvest, and applying a teaspoonful of fertiliser per maize plant. Her working hours and type if in outs have remained the same over the years, how ever, the yeilds have been declining drastically." The quote above is basically describing what sithembile's grandmother does. It also address the problem. " Yeilds have been declining drastically." I think this is a serious problem because this is how many people survive. It makes me wonder what other people can do to help. As i was reading this article i began to wonder how i will help this article also made me appreciate the many things that i have and the opportunity's that others do not

African farmers need to be able to access the knowledge and tools with which to grow a food-secure future for Africa. This would include, for example, the most effective and cost-efficient fertilisers and seeds, and improved access to markets.

      The quote I chose here is basically saying that the growth of food in Africa is still based on how good the climate is in now a days. The growth of food supply is not only one farmer's job, but all farmers's job. Everyone work together as a community and be success as a group.
  • While many young people do not seem to care about agriculture, they should acknowledge the fundamental role it plays in our lives.  Not only does it feed the cities, but it also feeds factories with the raw ingredients needed to continue building an economy.   One Young World will give me a chance to promote the importance of agriculture among my peers, and to help them understand its role in creating a food-secure, economically-stable Africa in the future.

      I this is challenging because the technology in now a days are very good, but we still need at least 5 years to improve the technology to make food supply faster and easier. It makes me wonder how can the technology imapct the farming.

In other words can we right now "Young people have the advantage of having grown up in a globally connected world, within which we communicate more quickly and broadly than perhaps any other generation before us. Whilst young people may not yet have the power to drive policies, we will be the ones who must accept the big challenges of the future which are as yet unresolved: from population growth to climate change to market reform and the end of poverty."

    I'm learning more about food security right now and in particular what I'm wondering about is how the next generation will take over to fight the challenge. I was researching this question online and this article caught my attention because it was written by a 24 year old woman who has worked in the field all her life. She grew up in Zimbabwe and she used to watch her grandmother work long exhausting days as a child and even now. Because of her grandmother, she wants to make a difference as she attempts to get her generation more active in facing world problems.\n\n"Whilst young people may not yet have the power to drive policies, we will be the ones who must accept the big challenges of the future which are as yet unresolved: from population to climate change to market reform and the end of poverty."\n\nThe quote I chose here is basically saying that she is calling out to the younger generation for help. Even though we don't have as much power as many others, we still have the power to try. It's up to us to contribute to changing the world.\n\nI think this is strong and hopefully it will motivate the younger generation to volunteer more and acknowledge these world issues. It makes me wonder what will happen in the future when it comes to youth involvement in the world. Will youth voices slowly disappear? Will anyone care anymore?

The quote I chose here is basically saying the younger generation can spread awareness because of the technology nowadays, news can be heard around the world. I think this is strong statement because it's true. That's how most people hear the news. Online, texting, watching television, and social networking. Many youngsters don't really read the newspaper. It's easier to just check the news websites online.

I was researching this question online, and this article caught my attention because it shows how people in Africa need help. It's too bad that these type of things happen in other parts of the world. I feel so spoiled and bad compared to these people. I'm so lucky and blessed to have the life that I have and that things are sometimes just handed to me and that opportunities are everywhere. I hope these type of lives will one day be over so that everyone can live a wonderful and fruitful life instead of having a hard working life like this.

    I'm learning more about Africa's food security right now, and in particular what I'm wondering is: Why isn't the younger generation helping the older generation? I was researching this question online, and this news item caught my attention because, all the changes that they are talking about is going to affect them in the long run and if they don't something about it now then it would be harder to fix later. The title of the news article is Fighting For Africa's Food Security. Something that i saw in the summary was that they are trying to fix the problem with Africa and they are trying to make a better way to get the young generation involved since they are not involved at all. "Political instability, global poverty and health, the financial crisis, religious conflicts and climate change are all issues that affect us and require long-term solutions to address substantially." I think this is a strog description because, if peoplee don't worry the sudden changes now how are they going to fix them later. I think that fixing the problem now will be more easier because later if you try to fix it some obstacles might be in the way.

I also think that climate changes can cause the most effect on food security because it changes the weather and also causes the temperature to change all around the world. It also causes the world to have more natural disasters all around. Many people lives also changes as the weather around them change.

    I'm learning more about food security right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: Why is there food security? I was researching this question online and this news item caught my attention because it talks about the reasons why there are food shortages. "The effects of climate change are exacerbating an already vulnerable food supply in Africa, leaving farmers less capable of providing for themselves alone. let alone their communities." The quote i chose here is basically saying that due to global warming, and recent climate changes, crops are not growing as well as they could. As the heat, and cold gets worse plants will not be able to survive. I think this is will not be good for the economy because without farmers being able to grow crops, that means less food for the humanity. It makes me wonder how much longer, it will take before food runs out, and people starve to death. Will the scientists figure out a way for more heat-resistant plants?

      There are many games similar to this.. such as maple story, flyff, ragnorak... its nothing new. The only thing good about WoW is the graphics and the fact that they update the game every single week. I'm rather tired of kinds of games because all you do is level and fight. It got pretty boring to me.

      But isn't one of the main attractions of video games to put people in an alternate world? I, in fact, don't think the game is very realistic. The whole idea of fantasy is what is so different from real world. I think that's what is most appealing.

      This does sound like Sims, however it is more fantasy. I guess it's what someone wants to get out of the game. I think that the idea of going on hunts and the whole monsters and dragons thing makes it very different than Sims.

Staten island has the smallest percentage due to how small the island is.Either way the rates of hunger have increased drastically.

I was researching this question online, and this news item caught my attention because it explains the problems about giving food to elder people. It also talks about Gillibrand and Sen. Chuck Schumer are co-sponsoring legislation to make permanent the Good Samaritan Hunger Relief Tax Incentive that encourages businesses to donate unused food items to food banks. I was researching this question online, and this news article, "Queens sees huge surge in demand for emergency meals and food" caught my attention because it explains what I'm wondering. The quote I chose here is basically saying that as the economy goes down, those who always donate clothes and other food supplies stopping donating because they cannot afford to. This is one of the biggest reason that food crisis in queens is becoming more serious. I think this is very sad because it makes me wonder how many people in our city right now don't have food to eat and can barely survive. I'm now recalling how much food that I have wasted since I was born. I believe that if I had saved all that amount of food, I would have saved a lot of people. She believes that instead of building games that are very different from the reality, she wants to build reality within the games.She starts off by telling the history of game and the father of games, herotitus. She saids that the core focus in game play is to engage yourself within the system. She also states that she believes that people play games because when they're playing a game, they're not suffering. I think this is true because people feel happy when they play a game that they like. Whenever I'm bored and unhappy, I go to my computer and start playing one of my favorite games. I really like the examples that she gives. One of the examples is world of warcraft. Tons of people play this game and wish that it were to become true because people online are so much more cooperative than people in reality. Before watching this video, I never thought about this kind of stuff before. I've always wondered what kinds of new games they would create since games are starting to become boring. I think that there should be more reality games instead of make believes so that we can learn from those games to live a better life. We can treat those games as personal trainers. I think that it would benefit many people because because there is a high percentage attraction towards games.

    Well right know, we are learning about gaming. I never really thought about the new technology that's going to be produce for gaming since I always really just thought about the games. I do wonder though what kind of technology would be produced. I hope it's pretty cool though like one of those future movies excluding the part where it takes over humans....I rather not be running around with little robots chasing me. Yeah, that really doesn't sound to appealing "This is ancient dice from the kingdom Lydia where Turkey is today. They used knuckle bones like from sheep to make dice." I find the dice very interesting. I really can't imagine the dice being formed from knuckle bones. I wonder how they do it. I'm going to guess that they used fire and pressure to form it? Not really sure, it's probably going to be similar to that I guess. "A future forecast: 2013. We increasingly live our real lives inside of massively multiplayer games." I find that pretty interesting for the fact of its 2010 and it kind of like that now. I mean people are playing massively multiplayer games even today. Mostly online. I think by 2013 something of what she's talking about will appear. It'll probably from Asia and it can be like that future movie where people live in a 3D world. They're like hooked onto machines and stuff. That would be interesting. Maybe dangerous.

    I'm learning more about how global warming is causing a food crisis all over the world right now and in particular what I'm wondering about is: what is going to happen if nothing is done? I was researching this question online and this article caught my attention because it describes what might happen in the future by providing statistics and evidence. \n\n"In Italy, maize yields fell 36% in 2003, compared with the previous year, and in France they fell 30%. That can be accomplished by using crops that have proved resistant to extreme heat - like sorghum or millet - to breed hybrid-crop varieties that are more capable of withstanding higher temperatures.     I learning more about romantic poems right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about why do people write poems when they can express their feelings. I researching this question online, and this poem "Because She Would Ask Me Why I Loved Her", it caught my attention because of the question why I loved her. Students who are weak in the verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences will certainly be at a disadvantage in a culture that places so much emphasis on the traditional intelligences. Despite their weaknesses, however, students who are given the opportunity to succeed using an intelligence in which they can excel demonstrate that they are capable of developing their verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences.

    I'm learning more about the multiple intelligences right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: How this theory is applied in modern education? I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because it mentioned that schools did not use a variety of learning styles to teach. "...American schools still base their instruction primarily on the verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences. As a result, many students who are not strong in these traditional intelligences develop poor attitudes toward school and their academic achievement suffers." Most schools today base their curriculum around only two of several intelligences. However, many students are more adept in using other methods to learn. This makes it harder for those students to excel, despite having the ability to if given the right school environment. I think this is true because I know a bunch of people who are extremely talented in a lot of areas. They know a lot, but, they have poor grades, mainly because they can not showcase their abilities properly. It makes me wonder if the school system will change in the future. Then, maybe it will be more fair.

    I'm learning more about Multiple Intelligences right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: How are Multiple Intelligences used in school? I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because it answers my question directly. "traditional and nontraditional approaches should be combined to formulate a method of education that is best suited to the students who populate our classrooms. The multiple intelligences offer a balance which teaches students what they need to know in order to be successful in our society in a way that compliments the unique abilities that each individual possesses." The quote i chose here is basically saying that the authorities should change school so that they can combine two different intelligences together. By combining two intellgences it is easier for students who are not dominant in either logical, or linguistic intelligences. I think this is smart because many students dominant intelligences are not in linguistic, or logical. Instead it is in the intelligences schools do not incorporate into the curriculum. It makes me wonder if i would do better in school, if two intelligences were combined.

    I'm learning more about Maturity right now in particular what I'm wondering about is how long it takes for maturity to kick in. I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because its true. My father talks about this all the time. "They refuse to blame other people or circumstances, and accept that they have made and will make mistakes. In order to live that way, they know they need to keep learning - especially from their mistakes - and put a high priority on wisdom. The wiser they get, the more more wisdom they want, and the more grateful they become for every source of wisdom, learning and knowledge. Children say, "Its not my fault."" The quote i chose here is basically saying That as time goes along eventually you take responsibility for your actions and you stop with baby foolishness like saying he did it and she did it. I think this is great because It makes me wonder wow this is easy because could do this and its easy if thats all you have to do

    I'm learning about "We need to realize Africa's potential on agriculture" right now, and in particular what I'm wondering is African farmers must be able to access the knowledge and tools they need to unleash agriculture's full potential for the continent? I was researching this question online, and this article caught my attention because it talks about the threat of food insecurity, of a changing climate, of disrupted marketplaces all paint a picture of potential famine, drought and widespread poverty. "Climate change is exacerbating an already poor food supply in Africa, leaving farmers less capable of providing for themselves, let alone their communities. The problems vary across the continent - droughts, flash floods, early rains, late frosts - but they all threaten to make farmers' traditional planting knowledge obsolete. A recent report from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) projects that wheat, rice and maize yields in sub-Saharan Africa are expected to drop by 34%, 15% and 10% respectively by 2050." The quote that I chose here is basically saying that climate is something important because that determines the food. I think that this is strong because people need food to survive. Without food they are dead.

    I'm learning about human trafficking right now, and in particular what im wondering about is: why would people do that? i researched my question online and this article caught my attention. "Traffickers seek out vulnerable victims and coerce them into situations of exploitation. One such example is Maria (not her real name), an 8-year old girl who was forcibly removed from her home in Guatemala by a child trafficking ring and taken to a brothel in Cancún two years ago. Maria is now staying in a shelter for victims of human trafficking in Mexico City" The quote i chose here is basically saying that the traffickers picked up an innocent 8 year old girl and turned her into a prostitute. People are disgusting and will do anything for money. They just go and pick up people and think they can do whatever they want with them. As if we were just livestock.

    I'm learning more about Women Empowerment right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: What do women have to empower?. I was researching this question online and this news item caught my attention because it talks about Mexico launching national campaign against human trafficking. I chose this item to read because I know that this situation is the top problem in the world. The title tells makes you think tons of things like for example that they want to end this problem. There are other countries who traffics a lot. "14 April 2010 - Mexico today took the lead in putting human trafficking on the global agenda by launching its own national version of the United Nations "Blue Heart" campaign against human trafficking." The quote I chose here is basically saying that they are come with an organization to deal with the Mexican Traffickers. They want to improve. It is almost like the United Nations in the USA. They want to make their own version. I think this is strong because it makes me wonder about how all the time the traffickers have to hide from the police. Their poor family are suffering. If they get caught they are in jail or they die. They get a lot of money. I want to know out of the entire world how many traffickers are in the world.

    I'm learning more about gangs right now, and in particular what i am wondering is: Why do teenage girls want to join gangs? I was researching online, and this new item caught my attention because I myself hate gangs and the thought of a young girl interacting with gangs i wrong. She gave up her childhood just to be cool. "Teenage girls wanting to join violent male gangs are being forced into having sex and ferrying guns, knives and drugs, police and charities have found." Young teenage girls want to join gangs for what and at what cost? These days girls and boys would do anything to be down with the people. Today's world is going crazy, Kids needs to stop trying to be down and finish school. I think this is all pointless because all gangs are good for is learning how to shoot and kill someone. That is what you wanna do then you join the army.

    Well, I'm not saying that I like the situation, but instead that the article caught my interests. I never would have thought girls would join gangs especially for a silly reason such as protection. It makes me disgusted knowing that the gangs take advantage of them and treat them like the inferior group even when they are transporting their guns and supplies. Disturbing!
