Environment Institute strives to shrink carbon footprint - 0 views

  •
Something that I have been interested in learning more about has been about Environment. I remember my Math Teacher talking about it during his math class, but I didn't have a good explanation on what he really meant. Lately, the issue had caught my eye again. I know that many people feel that why is the environment important to the world and us? From what I have heard many scientist say that we need to have the environment clean. For example I hread that if we dont keep the environment clean we are destryoing ourselves. Now that's what I have heard, it may or may not be true. On thing that I know for sure about Environment is that it's what we live in and we need to make the best of it. Now I've studied my share of Biology and I believe that the Environment is caused by the smokes and other stuff that damages the world. Personally that's what I know and it may sound kind of funny but hey that's what ever one says. The most important about this topic is that Environment is what it keeps us on this world. An important quote that I believe that is given alot of information is where it says: Be the change you want to see in the world, said former UCL student Mahatma Gandhi - and staff at the UCL Environment Institute are acting on his advice.Staff calculated the carbon footprint of their work-related travel as part of an ongoing attempt to reduce the institute's impact on the environment. The study was based on the movements of a total of 12 staff and three PhD students during the 2007/08 academic year. The staff based their calculations on guidelines from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).They used the guidelines to calculate precisely how much carbon was emitted in the course of their work-related travel. According to the article :: The total carbon dioxide emissions for staff in 2007/08 amounted to 29.64 tonnes as a result of 231,700 kilometres of travel - an average of 2.5 tonnes per person. Of the total

    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Game creators consider seasons and the game has room for upgrading.
  • In it, players design a character to play based on a number of starting options, such as the race of character and its type or class.
    • Tian EWSIS

I like that players can design their own charactors.
    • Andrea. C

yea, it sounds like it's funner if the game has different jobs to play
    • Chun Heng EWSIS

it is the top online game throughout the wolrd =)
    • Ammy EWSIS

There are many games similar to this.. such as maple story, flyff, ragnorak... its nothing new. The only thing good about WoW is the graphics and the fact that they update the game every single week. I'm rather tired of kinds of games because all you do is level and fight. It got pretty boring to me.
    • diane ewsis

this is for the whole paragraph the combat seems so interesting
    • JustinM EWSIS

its hard to find a mmorpg that doesnt have a character design feature unless it is really crappy or low quality even then its still hard to find one thats well known
    • Hannah EWSIS

I agree with Justin almost all have character design features.
    • Anna EWSIS

Yeah I know what you mean ammy. At first I was addicted to MS but all i did was level and fight. It bored me.
    • Michael Harris

I like that fact that you can obtain a character based on race
    • Noreen C

Why is it so important to have a character design? I mean I get it when a person picks what character they want to be, but why do you need to pick the color of their hair, or race?

Explains environment, possible interaction with international people.
  • a player then has four to seven of the game's ten character classes to choose from
    • YuDi EWSIS

Not all ten players can be used.
    • Zhapa EWSIS

      so true
    • Tian EWSIS

Also it needs a minimum level in order to choose a hero class. This gives players motivation to keep playing until they reach the levels they need.

How to make a character. Alliance or Horde? Different "races" available.
  • Season
  • The game has three roles, DPS (damage dealer), tank and healer, a member of any class can be customized for the DPS role, while members of some classes, known as hybrids, can also be customized as healers, tanks or any of the three roles.
    • YuDi EWSIS

The different classes makes the game funner.
    • Jessica =D

Also helps to play. You need a healer to heal your party and the such.
    • William Utama

ofcourse if people have the classes it will be boring~~
    • Hawa EWSIS

Hmm...I hate being a healer though...healers are boring in my opinion.
    • JustinM EWSIS

every game has different jobs so that there is a varaity in the gameplay and for obsesive people who wish to have all the classes to have a little more fun

    • Hannah EWSIS

I really like the names they are quite creative and interesting.
    • Sarah B

i think it is titled world of warcraft because this is an alternate world where people are learning the art of war, or how to make war/fight in wars.
    • Yuval S

Helen, i think that there is also a meaning to this weird name
    • Kim T

I'm guessing the name is either something in another language or gibberish.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Each character is assigned a role at your decision. Play in a group or individually.
  • Players can also participate in player versus player combat, either in large groups or small team matches.
    • Helen EWSIS

I find this to be very typical in all kinds of games.
    • Houin EWSIS

It is a good way for the character go to the PvP and have match with other player.

      I agree with you Helen.
  • These are indicated by having yellow exclamation marks (!) above their heads, while yellow question marks (?) represent quests ready to hand back and complete.[26] Quests usually reward the player with experience points and in-game money
    • YuDi EWSIS

Many games usually allow players make their own groups.
    • Hawa EWSIS

Hmm the yellow questions I have seen in other games for quests and stuff....
  • al and periodical events have also been added, such as Halloween, Midsummer and weekly fishing competitions
    • Tian EWSIS

Although it's in a fictional world, there are still realistic things, such as Halloween. This makes the game more attractive and interesting.
    • Houin EWSIS

i agree with you,the game will following the real holiday and create some activitly or quest about the holiday.
    • Andrea. C

Yea, I think when there's events like these, people get drawn in because they get rare items or whatever
    • MelissaB EWSIS

I think that this is giving people a excuse to be anti social and have no life why talk to real people or go outside when there is a whole vertual reality the mirrors the real world.
    • Shehrina EWSIS

I agree too. holidays always makes pepole happy and when there favorite holidays are in the game its more interesting.
    • Yuval S

I agree, I like the idea of putting special things for special events.
    • Noreen C

But isn't one of the main attractions of video games to put people in an alternate world? I, in fact, don't think the game is very realistic. The whole idea of fantasy is what is so different from real world. I think that's what is most appealing.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Professions are different from roles. You can actually get useful skills fit for that profession.
  • Characters can be resurrected by other characters that have the ability, or can self-resurrect by moving from the graveyard to the place where they died.
  • To start, players select a game realm or server to play on.
  • Each realm is in one of four different categories, depending on which set of combat rules it uses.
    • Tian EWSIS

The main goal of the game is to defeat monsters and complete the mission, which is very similar to the one that I used to be playing.
  • players are mainly focused on defeating monsters and completing quests (Player versus environment)

  • Enhancing a character's reputation can gain access to rare items, unique abilities and profession-based patterns and plans,[29] as well as lowering cost of items sold by NPCs belonging to that faction

  • Players are also able to customize their character through the use of talents, which are further abilities related to their character class.[9][10]
    • Munaza EWSIS

This sound fun, and very engaging becasue people can can create characters depending the person.
  • roleplay versions of both these types, where players are encouraged to control their character as if they were an inhabitant of a fantasy world
    • Helen EWSIS

I can't imagine someone getting so in to the game... but I guess it's fairly normal also. How do you do that? o_o
    • Luis EWSIS

This sounded like Sims, but it would be interesting to have this combination of battle and civil life
    • Shehrina EWSIS

People get addicted to a game. And when they are playing their favorite video games they have no idea about whats going on around them.
    • Jeannie EWSIS

I think this game sounds pretty fun.. I used to like roleplaying games
    • Yuval S

A lot of people go ODE about the game. you will if you also play
    • Noreen C

This does sound like Sims, however it is more fantasy. I guess it's what someone wants to get out of the game. I think that the idea of going on hunts and the whole monsters and dragons thing makes it very different than Sims.
  • In one of the updates following the release of the Burning Crusade expansion, the rate at which characters gain experience from killing monsters was increased, along with reducing the amount of experience required to gain further skills and abilities.

By accumulate experiences can make players beat boss.
  • Race determines the character's appearance, starting location, and initial skill set, called "racial traits".
    • Tian EWSIS

"Racial traits" does not only determine the appearance of each charactor, but also affect their skills in combat. I like how this is designed.
  • Characters are also able to learn two primary professions from a list of ten. These can be gathering professions, such as mining, herb gathering, or animal skinning. Characters can also choose from crafting professions, such as blacksmithing, leatherworking, or enhancement professions such as enchanting or inscription.

this game iv heard of many times and it is suppose to be a good game however i find that it gets extremely tedious really fast and it gets boring after time which is good for a game that you piad for and have to keep paying for in order to play it
    • Jose EWSIS

World of Warcraft is a place where people can leave their everyday lives and live a "cooler" much perfered life to escape reality. It is here where a great world of interaction occurs and technology truely shines as we see it in action.
    • Helen EWSIS

This is really interesting... GLOBAL APPROACH?
    • Dylan EWSIS

I can see how people get addicted because they dont want to miss out on any extra priviledges so they buy all the extra game packs ot keep up to date with the game.
    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Includes holiday-based events and uses weather effects. How sentimental.

General idea of questing. Awards and experience points are given after completing a quest.
  • As well as banding together to form groups, players can also band together to form guilds. These structures allow players several benefits, such as easier communication and an identifying guild name and tabard. Guild members can also be given access to a central pool of resources known as a guild bank.[13] Guilds can also make use of an in-game calendar, allowing guild members to view scheduled events, and respond to them with whether they can attend or not. This calendar can also be accessed without need to log-in to the game, using the Armory feature.[14]

    • AndreaLee EWSIS

This paragraph explains the types of quests. Death happens but characters can be brought back to life.

  • Death Knights are a hero class, which means the player needs a level 55 (at least) and they start at level 55 with many skills, abilities, weapons and armor. While a character can be played on its own, players can also group up with others in order to tackle more challenging content. In this way, character classes are used in specific roles within a group

  • In common with many MMORPGs, World of Warcraft requires players to pay for a subscription, usually either by credit-card or by buying a card from a retailer to redeem for a pre-determined amount of subscription time.[15]

This paragraph shows that one can improve "reputation." There are rare abilities available.
  • Further options to customize the appearance, such as hairstyles, skin tones, etc are also available.
    • Helen EWSIS

REALLY? I thought that was just in games that "dress up" their characters as opposed to fictionous animated characters.
    • diane ewsis

For the paragraph What can't you change
  • Players can discover 'flight masters' in newly discovered locations and then use those NPCs in order to fly to previously discovered locations in other parts of the world.[19
  • As well as banding together to form groups, players can also band together to form guilds.
    • Tian EWSIS

Players can interact with each other, which makes the game more fun. The players can also share experience with each other.
  • Depending on the race chosen and the expansions installed, a player then has four to seven of the game's ten character classes to choose from.
    • Helen EWSIS

    • AndreaLee EWSIS

Overall, I am very bored of this lesson and feel that this is pointless because I really don't care about the history or explanation of the "Gameplay of World of Warcraft." Plus, this game is rather boring and makes me not want to play. Great.
    • Kim T

    • Tian EWSIS

Players have to explore locations themselves. That means the plot is not determined by the game and it will leave the players more to imagine.
    • Ammy EWSIS

I like exploring in games especially when the game has very good graphics.

Dont quests get boring after a period of time? The game designers or whatever you call them must come up with a lot of ideas if the quests are never ending.

  • High end dungeons allow more players to group together and form a raid. These dungeons allow up to forty players to enter at a time in order to face some of the most difficult challenges.[33] In the Burning Crusade expansion the most common group sizes are ten and twenty-five,[32] based on the idea that these groups would be easier to fill and coordinate.[32] As well as dungeon-based raid challenges, several creatures exist in the normal game environment that are designed for raids to attack.[20][23] [edit]

Global warming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • The most commonly discussed measure of global warming is the trend in globally averaged temperature near the Earth's surface.
    • Munaza EWSIS

This is impotant, many people do not know that the temperature of the earth is cahnging significantly.
  • An increase in global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation, probably including expansion of subtropical deserts.[7] The continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice is expected, with warming being strongest in the Arctic. Other likely effects include increases in the intensity of extreme weather events, species extinctions, and changes in agricultural yields.
    • Munaza EWSIS

The temperature is affecting not only regular temperature but also changes in the agriculture facilities. It is merans that food industry prices as well as food companies will "sky rocket", because of temperature changes.
  • Political and public debate continues regarding climate change, and what actions (if any) to take in response. The available options are mitigation to reduce further emissions; adaptation to reduce the damage caused by warming; and, more speculatively, geoengineering to reverse global warming. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
    • Munaza EWSIS

Politics is making the Climate Chnge issue, unimportant, I beleive that Govermnets are just "selling their image", so they would look good. There are many, many policies pacts that have been made in order to "control Clmiate Change/ Global Warming". When will there be a policy that actually help the meniviroment?

  • Human activity since the Industrial Revolution has increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to increased radiative forcing from CO2, methane, tropospheric ozone, CFCs and nitrous oxide. The concentrations of CO2 and methane have increased by 36% and 148% respectively since the mid-1700s.[23] These levels are much higher than at any time during the last 650,000 years, the period for which reliable data has been extracted from ice cores.[24] Less direct geological evidence indicates that CO2 values this high were last seen about 20 million years ago.[25] Fossil fuel burning has produced about three-quarters of the increase in CO2 from human activity over the past 20 years. Most of the rest is due to land-use change, particularly deforestation.[26]
    • Munaza EWSIS

Industrial Revolution was bound to happen, people would live in the stone age for the rest their lives. When the Industrial Revlotion did occur things did not look bad, as of 2002 and futher did the climate change was becoming a issue to looked upon as an issue.
  • If the atmosphere is warmed, the saturation vapor pressure increases, and the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere will tend to increase. Since water vapor is a greenhouse gas, the increase in water vapor content makes the atmosphere warm further; this warming causes the atmosphere to hold still more water vapor (a positive feedback), and so on until other processes stop the feedback loop
    • Munaza EWSIS

The atmosphere is warming up, there is no way for stoppiong the warming up but there is a way of slowing this down or going green
  • When ice melts, land or open water takes its place. Both land and open water are on average less reflective than ice and thus absorb more solar radiation. This causes more warming, which in turn causes more melting, and this cycle continues.
    • Munaza EWSIS

The Ice is melting. If you look at the The cold continent of Antartica, the ice caps are melting there. The North and the South Poles are melting. The sea levels are rising and inhabitants such as polar bears and Penguins are getting affected. The sea levels are afftecting Island Nations as well as sea bordering nations.
  • Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) between the start and the end of the 20th century.
    • Mei EWSIS

      basic information about global warming.
  • However, warming is expected to continue beyond 2100 even if emissions stop, because of the large heat capacity of the oceans and the long lifetime of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
    • Mei EWSIS

people are using air conditioner in the summer and the gases come out of air conditioner are bad for the o-zone.
  • Temperature changes vary over the globe. Since 1979, land temperatures have increased about twice as fast as ocean temperatures (0.25 °C per decade against 0.13 °C per decade).
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

I think this sentence is important because this shows that global warming is causing the earth to get warmer. This changes things lik melting of ice bergs which can lead to rising sea level and cause major changes.
  • The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of the 20th century was caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases resulting from human activity such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

This is important because it descibes why and how the temperatures all around the world are going up. This also shows that as we get more technology, we are destroying the earth more and more.
  • The IPCC also concludes that variations in natural phenomena such as solar radiation and volcanoes produced most of the warming from pre-industrial times to 1950 and had a small cooling effect afterward.
  • The uncertainty in this estimate arises from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations and the use of differing estimates of future greenhouse gas emissions.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

I think this means that no one can predict what would happen or how much emissions we produce. Less is the best, but none is great
  • The greenhouse effect is the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in the atmosphere warm a planet's lower atmosphere and surface.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

This means that how much emissions we would make is how much global warming we create or how much we would make our own doom.
  • Clouds also affect the radiation balance, but they are composed of liquid water or ice and so are considered separately from water vapor and other gases.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

I wonder if this can also help since it can cool down the face of the earth and also it can help by reflecting solar light back into space as it makes it's way through the atmosphere.
  • Global dimming, a gradual reduction in the amount of global direct irradiance at the Earth's surface, has partially counteracted global warming from 1960 to the present.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

This means that global dimming helps by reflecting the warm sunlight away from earth so that we can keep it cool itstead of hot.
  • Observations show that temperatures in the stratosphere have been steady or cooling since 1979, when satellite measurements became available.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

I wonder if this can really help out since it has really little effect, while we release tons of gas into our atmosphere.
  • Warming is expected to change the distribution and type of clouds. Seen from below, clouds emit infrared radiation back to the surface, and so exert a warming effect; seen from above, clouds reflect sunlight and emit infrared radiation to space, and so exert a cooling effect.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

I think this is important since it might trap heat, but it relfects even more heat out than it traps. It also helps cool the earth, but trapping those gases in can harm us since those gas can be toxic.
  • Measures including water conservation,[99] water rationing, adaptive agricultural practices,[100] construction of flood defences,[101] Martian colonization,[102] changes to medical care,[103] and interventions to protect threatened species[104] have all been suggested. A wide-ranging study of the possible opportunities for adaptation of infrastructure has been published by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.[
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

I wonder if we would really need to evacuate earth if there is no possible answer for saving our lives and the earth as well.
  • Geoengineering is the deliberate modification of Earth's natural environment on a large scale to suit human needs.[106] An example is greenhouse gas remediation, which removes greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, usually through carbon sequestration techniques such as carbon dioxide air capture.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

I think this is important because if we do have to evacuate the earth, then we would need to bring this information to our new planet so that we can preserve that planet and hopefully learn from our mistakes.
  • In 2007–2008 Gallup Polls surveyed 127 countries. Over a third of the world's population were unaware of global warming, with developing countries less aware than developed, and Africa the least aware. Of those aware, Latin America leads in belief that temperature changes are a result of human activities while Africa, parts of Asia and the Middle East, and a few countries from the Former Soviet Union lead in the opposite belief.
  • Geoengineering is the deliberate modification of Earth's natural environment on a large scale to suit human needs.
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

This means that geoengineering is the study of changing the environment of earth to suit human needs. This is like constructing more land or to shape the lands so that buildings can be built or changing the land so that it can be used for vegetation.
  • one study suggests that projected rates of extinction are uncertain.[80]
    • JackeyQ EWSIS

  • RoSE’s answer is that people seeking knowledge do not necessarily want to go to either a document (a “document-centric” approach) or a person (a “social- network” approach) as their first point of access—though they will take either.  More ideal is an online environment that allows them to seek out documents and people in the context of relationships between the two (e.g., of authorship, reception, affiliation, recommendation, sponsorship, commentary, rebuttal, etc.).

I'm liking this definition, and having two different questions push their way in: 1) How will RoSE deal with the walled-garden aspect of much of academic resources? 2) Can game theory be blended with such a social environment? (crazy thought)

Social Networking on Intranets (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox) - 0 views

  • An old lesson that holds true with social software is that a bunch of stand-alone tools will provide a disconnected user experience, causing employees to waste inordinate amounts of time moving between environments.

This feels even more true in schools. I'm worried about the different environments we are introducing into the Youth Voices community: Google Apps, Diigo now too?, VoiceThread, and Drupal... probably more. Need to think on these matters.

The Story of Sam He plays the saxophone and is in his school's jazz band. He is a senior in high school and is about to graduate. He is here from Mexico and immigrated here when he was 5 years old. His visa expired and his father did not reapply for one. "I was raised an American." He did not get in to college because of his legal status. Michelle is his girlfriend, she plays the piano. His family wanted him to keep a low key because they were afraid of what would happen. Every Sunday morning, his family gets together to play together. His mom sings, brother plays the drums, sister plays the bass, and his father is a pastor. He graduates high school in Indiana and his dream is to go to Indiana University, but he applied too late and issues arose. He did not qualify for financial aid because he is undocumented. His father tries to push him to find a job in the summer since school is about to start in 2 months. He cannot pay for tuition, cannot commute to college because he doesn't have a driver's license, and can't work on the mark. "I can't go very far." "I'm not sure what my future is..."

The thing that stood out most for me was the saxophone that was playing throughout the podcast and the talk about college. It never occurred to me that immigrants who don't have their documents, might not be able to go to college. And it's hard for Sam to go to college, also because he has only 2,000 and even with financial aid, it's impossible
  •
I really like his story. The story taught me a lot about college, which is something that we are all working on right now. In addition, when he said that "But what happens after they leave high school? The best and brightest have no problem getting accepted into top universities. But that's where their immigration status gets tricky", I was also thinking that it might be an issue. As an immigrant myself, I was starting to think about if the immigration status would have certain impact in the future.
  •
Right now we are listening to a podcast. The podcaster is talking about himself. The podcast is about a guy who is undocumented and its his struggle in college. One quote that stood out for me was "whole family plays music on the stage." This stood out for me because it shows that he has a close family and they are there for each other. Another quote that stood out for me was " The whole college proses was very frustrating" I understand him because I am also going through this college proses and it is very confusing at times. Also stressful because everything has to be right. I admire Sam because With all the obstetrical in his life he still going to college and getting an education. It is great that his family is supporting him.
  •
Sam's parents did not teach him his indigenous culture/language. They possibly thought that by not teaching him Spanish it'd become easier for him to assimilate to the American culture, but by doing so I feel like it cost him a part of his identity. What if Sam get's deported, he won't be able to survive in an environment that he's not familiar too. His own father acknowledges his sons capability to adjust in born country.

The Best and Worst Zodiac Combination on Relationships - 1 views

  •
I'm learning more about zodiac signs right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: How much of your personality is defined through your zodiac sign? I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because of it's title. I could tell it would describe which pair of zodiac signs are the most compatible depending on their personalities. "The following pairings are just guides, no matter what sign you are, it is still up to both of you on how to cultivate and maintain a harmonious relationship with one another. " The quote I chose here is basically saying this page is almost like advice or a warning for the readers to learn more about zodiac sign compatibility. This may vary depending on how much personalities are changed by their environment. It isn't impossible for a Leo and Pisces to have a stable relationship but according to the article, it'll be very difficult for them. I think this is interesting because the future of a relationship can be determined just by zodiac signs of the partners. It makes me wonder if two zodiac signs who are known to be the most compatible could have struggles or an end to their relationship. The commitment of both partners matters too which can be determined by zodiac signs as well. It says Taurus and Scorpio are one of the best combination in relationships. It says "Though sometimes it can be rough, Scorpio brings out the best motivation for Tauruses whenever they encounter any failure and hardships. Scorpios are compassionate for Tauruses and gives them a feeling of security." I believe this is true from the experience I've had. From what is described in this article is almost exactly what I'm facing with a close person in my life who is a Taurus. I am a Scorpio and since our signs are almost opposites, we balance out each other and build a good relationship; Scorpio is a fire sign and Taurus is a water sign.
  •
I find zodiac signs interesting too. im a taurus and i feel that taurus & Aries are one of the best signs in the zodiac. Those two signs put together are pretty much unstopable if they get together even if they say that they dont go together

How much of your personality is defined through your zodiac sign? Many people believe in astrology and follow their everyday lives according to their horoscopes. I personally believe that astrology is mostly accurate when it comes to people's personalities and the problems they will face in the future or their successes. The way your zodiac sign is described may not be exactly your own personality because there are other personalities around you that shape the kind of person you are as well. Zodiac signs are assigned according to your birthday and determines what kind of person you are. Two people are exactly the same so obvious there will be differences among people with the same birthdays mostly, because of their environments. But, the basis of their personalities can be told from their zodiac signs.

Maturity (psychological) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • By this definition, how an individual feels about himself is no more legitimate than how others feel about him, and so it is important that this individual gains a certain level of maturity as he grows older to earn the respect of others. However, maturity need not reflect one's actions in a social situation among well-known peers, as in these situations there is no need to establish a sense of maturity as once maturity is established, it by no means has to be a norm. Furthermore, one need not establish maturity on how others view their personality, because a casual observer cannot totally judge someone he or she does not know on a personal level.
    • Robin EWSIS

I belive this is true because a lot of people gain respect on the level of their maturity. Another reason is that I also believe that the sense of maturity comes from within thyself
  • maturity is not determined by one's age.
    • Robin EWSIS

this is in my words because it is true maturity doesn't come from age and a lot of people don't accept that. It doesn't mean that i except this like if you're a 40 year old acting like 12 year old isn't right but you have to give the person time to grow
  • In fact, judge Julian Mack, who helped create the juvenile court system in the United States, said that juvenile justice was based on the belief that young people do not always make good decisions because they are not mature, but this means that they can be reformed more easily than adults.[2] However, the relationship between psychological maturity and age is a difficult one, especially when it comes to the law. Immaturity is often used to distinguish between adolescents and adults, and there has been much debate over how to tell if someone is mature, especially regarding social issues like abortion.[3]
    • Robin EWSIS

I wonder why the juvenille system hasn't worked for most adelecents because more children find it "Cool" to go to juvenille prison rather than being a punishment so they purposely do things to get in with the in crowd even if it means messing up their future

My father also says this too. He says that im to young to drive and to worry about my school work and to keep in my studies. My mom is more protective than my dad she says that i don't need to be focusing on girls and other nonsense.
  • Maturity is a psychological term used to indicate that a person responds to the circumstances or environment in an appropriate and adaptive manner. This response is generally learned rather than instinctual, and is not determined by one's age. Maturity also encompasses being aware of the correct time and place to behave and knowing when to act with appropriate emotion for the situation.

  • Psychologist B.W. Roberts explains that in an explicit model of personality, one's personality must be viewed from both the perspective of the actor and the perspective of the observer. Therefore, one's maturity is not measured solely on introspection, but by how others view one's maturity as well, in a feedback loop.

  • Maturity is something of personal character, or how one acts in stressful or difficult situations, because then a person's true ability to react to a situation can be seen. Fake social interactions are often misjudged as many people rely on outward appearance to mask inner strengths/weaknesses so as to present a simpler version of oneself to the world.

Favela - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

"The cocaine trade has impacted Brazil and in turn its favelas, which tend to be ruled by drug lords. Regular shoot-outs between traffickers and police and other criminals, as well as assorted illegal activities, lead to murder rates in excess of 40 per 100,000 inhabitants in the city of Rio and much higher rates in some Rio favelas.[12] Traffickers ensure that individual residents can guarantee their own safety through their actions and political connections to them. They do this by maintaining order in the favela and giving and receiving reciprocity and respect, thus creating an environment in which critical segments of the local population feel safe despite continuing high levels of violence. Drug use is highly concentrated in these areas run by local gangs in each highly populated favela. Drug sales and use run rampant at night when many Favelas host their own baile, or dance party, where many different social classes can be found. These drug sales make up "a business that in some of the occupied areas rakes in as much as US$ 150 million per month, according to official estimates released by the Rio media.""

Global warming 'will leave Arctic ice-free' | Science | The Guardian - 0 views

  • Global warming is causing the Arctic ice-cap to melt at such an unprecedented rate that by the summer of 2070 it may have no ice at all, according to the most comprehensive study carried out on global climate change in the region.
  • The icecap has shrunk by 15% to 20% in the past 30 years and the trend is set to accelerate, with the Arctic warming almost twice as fast as the rest of the planet, due to a build-up of heat-trapping gases.
  • The findings support the broad scientific consensus that global warming is caused mainly by rising atmospheric greenhouse gases as a result of emissions from cars, factories and power plants.
  •
This is helpful information towards understanding how serious global warming is in the arctic.

Bacteria Could Survive in Martian Soil | Universe Today - 1 views

  •
I'm learning more about "Life on Mars" right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: Is there life on Mars? I was researching this question online, and this blog caught my attention because It said that there is a possibility that bacteria could live on Mars. I thought this discovery was ground breaking, and I thought that nothing could live on Mars. "The question of whether life in the form of bacteria (or something even more exotic!) exists on Mars is hotly debated, and still requires a resolute yes or no. Experiments done right here on Earth that simulate the conditions on Mars and their effects on terrestrial bacteria show that it is entirely possible for certain strains of bacteria to weather the harsh environment of Mars." The quote I chose here is basically saying certain bacteria may be able to survive on Mars, but this is only inferred after a series of experiments, conducted on Earth. I think this is interesting because it makes me wonder if Humans will ever be able to live on Mars, or if anything does exist there, or if anything exists even outside of earth. I first read this and thought, "wow!" this is really amazing. I continued reading and found out that it was not completely true. All of these experiments were conducted on earth, but the test(s) simulated to be like the terrain on Mars. I began wondering why don't they just attempt to place the bacteria, I am sure on less person wouldn't affect the population that badly. I know that is a bit harsh but I don't care.

Danger Flowers - 0 views

Something that I have been interested in learning more about has been danger flowers. I remember my Science teacher in third grade talking about it I was very young, but I didn't really understand it because I was very young. Lately, the issue has caught my eye again. I know that many people feel that some flowers are very danger. From what I have heard, this is true. Some flowers are very danger and can harm you. For example, I heard that there is this specific flowers that can kill you if you touch it or eat it. Now that's just what I've heard, it may or may not be true. One thing that I know for sure is that some flowers are healthy and others are bad. Now I've studied my share of Environmental Science, and I believe that it's something that people should know just in case you don't know that some flowers are danger. Personally, it's funny to me how flowers that are mainly red are the ones who are poisen. This was immportant in the past because, back then there was many people dieing for strange reasons due to poisen flowers. What I know about this topic is that you should be very careful with kids because kids are the ones that usually pick flowers and sometimes end up eating it. The flower is the reproductive structure of angiosperms or flowering plants. Compared to the reproductive structures of other plants, the flower is unique in several ways. It consists of four kinds of modified leaves, two of which (stamens and carpels, the latter sometimes called pistils) bear pollen and seeds. According to the fossil record, flowering plants appeared only about 140 million years ago, although some recently found fossil evidence suggests that they appeared 80 million years before that. Being that I didn't have a lot of background information on danger flowers, I chose to do some research on the topic. As I searched for blogs and news articles on Google, I came across this one article: http://www.ansci.cornell.edu/plants/. This article provided a lot of info

I was searching up, "phobia reasons and symptoms," and this item came up. It focuses on two types of phobias, Agoraphobia and sociophobia.\n\n"Agoraphobia like social phobia, affects more women than it does men. Sufferers of agoraphobia are terrified of panic attacks occurring in public places. Common fears are crowded environments and places where one can't escape easily. Meetings, standing in a queue or elevator are common situations that spark fear."

They’re built on top of social networks, so we use ordinary online tools like online video, blogs, wikis, and being part of a network. It’s not about graphics and avatars. Second, it’s real play and not role play. You don’t adopt a fictional personality. You play as yourself.

A Case for Multiple Intelligences Based Classroom Instruction « Advance Your ... - 0 views

  • All students should have the opportunity to not only further develop their dominant intelligences, but should also have the opportunity to develop their weaker intelligences. Students who are weak in the verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences will certainly be at a disadvantage in a culture that places so much emphasis on the traditional intelligences. Despite their weaknesses, however, students who are given the opportunity to succeed using an intelligence in which they can excel demonstrate that they are capable of developing their verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences.
  •
I'm learning more about the multiple intelligences right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: How this theory is applied in modern education? I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because it mentioned that schools did not use a variety of learning styles to teach. "...American schools still base their instruction primarily on the verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligences. As a result, many students who are not strong in these traditional intelligences develop poor attitudes toward school and their academic achievement suffers." Most schools today base their curriculum around only two of several intelligences. However, many students are more adept in using other methods to learn. This makes it harder for those students to excel, despite having the ability to if given the right school environment. I think this is true because I know a bunch of people who are extremely talented in a lot of areas. They know a lot, but, they have poor grades, mainly because they can not showcase their abilities properly. It makes me wonder if the school system will change in the future. Then, maybe it will be more fair.

I'm learning more about Multiple Intelligences right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: How are Multiple Intelligences used in school? I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because it answers my question directly. "traditional and nontraditional approaches should be combined to formulate a method of education that is best suited to the students who populate our classrooms. The multiple intelligences offer a balance which teaches students what they need to know in order to be successful in our society in a way that compliments the unique abilities that each individual possesses." The quote i chose here is basically saying that the authorities should change school so that they can combine two different intelligences together. By combining two intellgences it is easier for students who are not dominant in either logical, or linguistic intelligences. I think this is smart because many students dominant intelligences are not in linguistic, or logical. Instead it is in the intelligences schools do not incorporate into the curriculum. It makes me wonder if i would do better in school, if two intelligences were combined.

I guess this is saying that if you are not usually asleep when you normally would be, you are less attentive. You could bump into something or hurt your foot etc. When you are between being awake and being asleep that can also damage you in the morning.
  • Insomnia is a symptom[1] which can accompany of any of several sleep, medical and psychiatric disorders, characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep despite the opportunity.
    • CorrineA EWSIS

It's important because knowing what insomnia is helps to figure out what sleepless night are and why they occur.
  • According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services in the year 2007, approximately 64 million Americans regularly suffer from insomnia each year.[3] Insomnia is 1.4 times more common in women than in men.[4]

  • Transient insomnia lasts from days to weeks. It can be caused by another disorder, by changes in the sleep environment, by the timing of sleep, severe depression, or by stress. Its consequences - sleepiness and impaired psychomotor performance - are similar to those of sleep deprivation.[5]

this helps to know the different types of insomia so in case you come across sleepless nights then you can figure out what your symtoms may be

This type of insomnia is not very long but is is alarming to those who can't get a good night's sleep for months.
  • Chronic insomnia lasts for years at a time. It can be caused by another disorder, or it can be a primary disorder. Its effects can vary according to its causes. They might include sleepiness, muscular fatigue, hallucinations, and/or mental fatigue; but people with chronic insomnia often show increased alertness. Some people that live with this disorder see things as though they were happening in slow motion, wherein moving objects seem to blend together. Can cause double vision.[5]
    • CorrineA EWSIS

Is there more to this because I wonder how long chronic insomnia can go on.

      Does chronic mean consistantly?
  • In many cases, insomnia is caused by another disease, side effects from medications, or a psychological problem.
    • CorrineA EWSIS

What types of diseases cause mild sleepless nights?
  • Many insomniacs rely on sleeping tablets and other sedatives to get rest. All sedative drugs have the potential of causing psychological dependence where the individual cannot psychologically accept that they can sleep without drugs[citation needed].
    • CorrineA EWSIS

What types of sedatives can give you psychological diseases?
    • CorrineA EWSIS

Are sedatives harmful to you nervous system?
  • Restless Legs Syndrome can cause insomnia due to the discomforting sensations felt and need to move the legs or other body parts to relieve these sensations. It is difficult if not impossible to fall asleep while moving.
  • Some antidepressants such as amitriptyline, doxepin, mirtazapine, and trazodone can often have a very strong sedative effect, and are prescribed off label to treat insomnia.[33] The major drawback of these drugs is that they have antihistaminergic, anticholinergic and antiadrenergic properties which can lead to many side effects. Some also alter sleep architecture.
    • CorrineA EWSIS

I think that these are important because they are partly the reason why some people have sleepless nights. Also because these are anti-depressants and they are the laeding cause of sleepless nights which answers part of my question
  • The antihistamine diphenhydramine is widely used in nonprescription sleep aids such as Tylenol PM, with a 50 mg recommended dose mandated by the FDA. In the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and other countries, a 25 mg to 50 mg recommended dose is permitted.
    • CorrineA EWSIS

Why is this relevant to the treatment?
  • Cyproheptadine is a useful alternative to benzodiazepine hypnotics in the treatment of insomnia. Cyproheptadine may be superior to benzodiazepines in the treatment of insomnia because cyproheptadine enhances sleep quality and quantity whereas benzodiazepines tend to decrease sleep quality.
    • CorrineA EWSIS

What these two sentences are saying is that Cyproheptadine way better then benzodiazepines in the treatment of insomnia.

  • In February 2005, NASA scientists reported that they had found strong evidence of present life on Mars.[21] The two scientists, Carol Stoker and Larry Lemke of NASA's Ames Research Center, based their claims on methane signatures found in Mars' atmosphere resembling the methane production of some forms of primitive life on Earth, as well as on their own study of primitive life near the Rio Tinto river in Spain.
  • Within Islam, the statement of the Qur'an "All praise belongs to God, Lord of all the worlds" indicates multiple universal bodies, and maybe even multiple universes, which may indicate extraterrestrial and even extradimensional life. • Europa - Europa may contain liquid water beneath its thick ice layer. It is possible that vents on the bottom of the ocean warm the ice, so liquid could exist beneath the ice layer, perhaps capable of supporting microbes and simple plants, just like in Earth's hydrothermal vents.[2]
    • Reasat EWSIS
  • Mars - Life on Mars has been long speculated. Liquid water is widely thought to have existed on Mars in the past, and there may still be liquid water beneath the surface. Methane was found in the atmosphere of Mars. By July 2008, laboratory tests aboard NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander had identified water in a soil sample. The lander's robotic arm delivered the sample to an instrument which identifies vapors produced by the heating of samples. Recent photographs from the Mars Global Surveyor show evidence of recent (i.e. within 10 years) flows of a liquid on the Red Planet's frigid surface.[34]
  • The other large moons of our system which have been visited appear similarly lifeless, though the interesting geothermic forces observed (Io's volcanism, Europa's ocean, Titan's thick atmosphere) have underscored how broad the range of potentially habitable environments may be.
