In this article the author goes over a program set in place by Nationwide in Great Britain to help promote financial literacy in schools. One ways that they do this is release copies of the book Teenage Guide to Money to schools. Mutual One is also another company that is trying to help out the cause. One of their ideas is to let schools use MP4 players and podcasts that teach financial literacy.

A study show that children who go to childcare center have better test score and do better in school. These kids are prepared to go the kindergarten and they are the ones that continuously have success in school. This also talks about how when mothers start working and get off welfare, their child has better mental healt and begins to do better in school.

Although most states include evolution as a essential part of a well-rounded education, legislative action is continually perverting science standards to a point where we must ask the question, "Do state science standards matter?" Between 2005 and 2006, 23 states have modified science curricula, which further obscures the issue. Bandoli surveyed close to 2,500 freshman college students from both Indiana and Ohio regarding their experiences in high school biology. Among the incredible statistical information assembled here, Bandoli found that over 90% of students regarded evolution as a strong scientific theory. Considering the fact that 66% of high school biology teachers either breeze over or snub the teaching of evolution, these results appear to suggest that students may actually be more open-minded and competent than their high school teachers. Not only does this raise the issue of teacher quality and objectivity, it also questions the relevance and validity of the antievolution movement.

The author of this article does a study of individual level and school structural variables and weather they effect academic achievement. This study was conducted on about 12,000 10th graders so it is sufficient data and very reliable. They found that a schools climate is very important and can influence a students achievement level. Also, the article mentions student involovment will help academic achievement in many students.

The face amy difficulities in succedding in many different aspects. The things that they face make it very ifficult for the students to go to schools and effects their future. In this article it brings up a very good point on how if a teacher is absent, then it will effect the students in their classroom. Some teachers are better than others and that could also effect the students. This study shows that 5-6% are absent days while school is in session. When teachers do take off of work, its hard for the schools to find good substitutes and it then leads to a day of no learning for the students.

This article focuses on the implementation of early financial programs for young children. Financial literacy is a skill which all individuals will need throughout their life. Studies have found that individuals who received financial education in high school reported an increase up to 1.5% in their assets when compared to individuals who did not receive any education. While adding these course is certainly beneficial there are still a number of challenges. There is a cost to create such programs and some school districts are already facing budget problems.

Adolescence is a period of great intellectual development that holds a lasting, lifelong influence. The authors examine the degree to which a school's religious affiliation and contextual teaching influence the development of adolescent belief systems and attitudes. The researchers find that the religious tenor of the school is incredibly influential in shaping student worldviews. Because religion and science are often viewed as diametrically opposed, I'd like to take this data a little further and ask, to what degree does this trend impede or facilitate scientific literacy?

Colletti discusses the coordinated approach to financial literacy for girls that was started by the National Coalition of Girls' Schools in the U.S. The article stresses the importance for woman and girls to have sound financial literacy for success. Children have an understanding of finance and fairness even at a very young age. Therefore, young children are capable of learning about financial literacy at a very early age. The article also shares results of a financial skills study of teenage girls. Financial literacy education is a tool to help bridge the gap that woman have experienced throughout the ages.

this was an inetresting source because it said one fact i never really thought of before. that is that your friends and social grouping can influence your negative approach to schooling. this is a not a path i really ever thought to go down when looking at how my communities dynamics megativly effect school so i guess something good came out of this source.

This article reports on a small-scale study which examined the home literacy practices of a group of 3 and 4 year-old children in a working-class community in the north of England and explored how far these practices were reflected in the curriculum of the nursery the children attended. The data illustrate that there was a dissonance between out-of-school and schooled literacy practices and that there was more evidence of nursery literacy practices infiltrating the home than vice versa. Children's literacy practices in the home were focused on media and popular cultural texts and the article argues for greater recognition of these contemporary cultural practices in early years policy documentation and curriculum guidance. This article is about how when school and parents work together the child will be successful not only at school but throughout life. They have done a study for 30 years proving this. The main topic of this article is family literacy services and how they help children.

In 2007, the Oklahoma Legistalure passed a law called "The Passport to Financial Literacy Act" that requires students, beginning in the 7th grade, to demonstarate "financial proficiency in 14 areas" to acheive a high school diploma. Other schools with the help of the National Endowment Fund for Financial Education have incorporated programs to increase the levels of financial literacy among students. Critics of this program state that these prgrams are not helping the overall financial literacy levels of high school students upon completion. It is not plausable to state that these financial programs are useless, because these programs need to work in correcpendence of parents teaching their children good financial habits within their own homes.

There are ways for students to gain financial literacy and this article is mentions plans for student programs to help do this. The article talks about how some finance classes don't help a students understanding of finances, and mentions to have financial literacy it might have to begin in a person's childhood.

This article is based on a study released by the United States about the No child left behind act. The study is about how the act leaves out social studies, languages and the arts from schools. The only good that came from cutting out these subjects of study from school is that the rates of increase in learning for math sciense and reading/writing have gone up drammatically. This article is good if you are looking at the no child left behind act.

Green shares the story of Roy Kobert and John Ninfo a bankruptcy attorney and bankruptcy judge who both volunteer their time teaching kids the importance of financial literacy. With the economy plummeting out of control both men have decided to be advocates for teaching financial literacy to children and young adults. Both men have seen the devastating effect that financial literacy ignorance has caused on the economy and individuals. They fear that if creditors can lure the youth into debt, our countries youth future is in jeopardy. Their goal is to stop the madness before it starts through education intervention. The article also talks about several different programs promoting financial literacy that have been implemented in different states across the country.

Using a nationally representative sample of 13,609 kindergarten children in 2,690 classrooms and 788 schools from the base year of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999, along with three-level hierarchical linear models, this study investigates the impact of early literacy instruction on kindergarten children's learning, as measured by direct cognitive test scores, indirect teacher ratings of children's achievement in language and literacy, and indirect teacher ratings of children's approaches to learning. Two composite measures of phonics and integrated language arts are constructed from teachers' reports of their instructional practices. Findings show that classroom mean outcomes were significantly higher when classroom teachers reported using both integrated language arts and phonics more often. However, children with low initial performance benefited less from integrated language arts instruction, as measured by direct measures of achievement; such differential effects of instruction were not observed for teacher ratings of children's achievement and learning style. This article is about how parents influence thier childrens learning habits. Helping your children learn to read and write must start in the early years. Parents are a support team when thier child is learning to read. The way the parents read and write at home effects how the students read and write. Oral language is a foundation for literacy development.

This is an article from ACM International Conference Proceeding Series; Vol. 8 in the Proceedings of the Australasian conference on Computing education. The authors of the article discuss an initiative that took place at Monash University that was designed to inform secondary school students of the area of digital hardware and computing, including employment opportunity from this area of study. The students were given a project named "Smart House", aptly named because it was to be an automated home system based upon the development of custom hardware and software. I find this article interesting because it is a unique way to introduce an ambiguous area of study, such as "Digital Systems", to students who might not necessarily know what the area of study is. By offering a hands on project to students based in a field that they might have never heard of before, a greater understanding of the opportunities available in this area of study are gained.
