Is the business model of the future one where the customer no longer pays? Already products in the digital marketplace are being given away free, yet companies are still making profits.

If we are to equip students to navigate a digital world, education ought to be based on assessing students' individual strengths and weaknesses rather than making glib generalisations that mistake using Facebook for technological savvy.

Over the past couple of years, I've had the opportunity to plan some events that are focused on teaching and learning with technology (lower case since it is about the topic, not the TLT organization). These include the 2007 and 2008 TLT Symposiums and the Learning Design Summer Camp as well as some smaller events.

College freshman are more politically engaged today than at any point during the last 40 years, with 89.5 percent reporting that they frequently or occasionally discussed politics in the last year, according to UCLA's annual survey of the nation's entering students at four-year institutions.

The closest they came to a fan was an associate provost who admitted that he saw grade inflation as completely out of control and said that for more students at his and similar institutions, the grade-point average range is around 3.4 to 3.8. It seemed that everyone else in the room had been motivated to attend by their sense that the system isn't working: Other academic administrators who said grades had become meaningless.

Scholars, advertisers and political activists see massive online social networks as a representation of social interactions that can be used to study the propagation of ideas, social bond dynamics and viral marketing, among others. But the linked structures of social networks do not reveal actual interactions among people. Scarcity of attention and the daily rhythms of life and work makes people default to interacting with those few that matter and that reciprocate their attention. A study of social interactions within Twitter reveals that the driver of usage is a sparse and hidden network of connections underlying the "declared" set of friends and followers.

Today I was talking some collaborators on LLL3D about how to visualise concepts in Second Life. I remembered I had seen some twitterers mentioning that the University of Iowa had a visualisation of Bloom's taxonomy, I did a search and found that they had interactive models of both Bloom's taxononmy and Wenger's Communities of Practice.

The rapid rise in popularity of twitter in the past year has brought to mind the following question: what are some of the potential uses of twitter or other microblogging platforms in teacher education courses?

A Hashtag is simply any word, phrase or abbreviation preceded by a pound sign (#). It's a way to show you're talking about a specific topic without using up too many of Twitter's precious 140 characters.

SI 182 is an introductory programming course designed to be useful to a wide range of students in all concentrations. Built as a web site that uses Sakai as a repository.

We are using the word "story" in a general sense; it may be a deeply personal one of the digital storytelling variety, or it may be a tale of a travel trip, or a simple multimedia presentation.

As the phrase suggests, it is the telling of stories using Web 2.0 tools, technologies, and strategies. Since the name is fairly recent (and not yet widely used), it may not bear out as the best term for this trend. Another name may emerge, one better suited to describing this narrative domain. However, the term seems to have met with quiet acknowledgment to date, so it may serve as a useful one going forward.
