This space is a place for the members of the Horizon Project Advisory Board to manage the process of selecting the topics for the 2009 Horizon Report, which will be co-published by the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) and will be released publicly January, 2009.

Since SDSU's clicker standardization, clicker course enrollment has grown from under 3,000 in fall 2006 to over 12,500 in fall 2008. Learn about SDSU's collaborative approach to standardization and its innovative faculty support program, which combines a faculty community of practice developed through online and in-person peer interactions with hands-on workshops and one-on-one support. With its focus on improving student engagement and learning through effective practices with clickers, the impacts of this effort will be demonstrated through analysis of feedback data gathered each semester from thousands of students.

We launched our "blogging" service about 18 months ago after some real heated discussions about affordances of a system like this. Our argument to our primary IT group revolved around creating an environment that was an open publishing platform - not just a blog service. As you may have heard, a number of contributors in the Sakai community have begun talking about, and even working on, something being called Sakai 3. Sakai 3 would be a new version of Sakai representing significant change to the end-user experience and, likely, the underlying technology.

You may think that many adults have joined the online trend mainly to network professionally with others in their field. However, that turns out not to be true. Instead adults, like teens, are there to socialize with their friends and people they already know. Nearly nine in ten social network users (89%) say they use the networks to stay in touch with friends, and 57% say they use it to make plans with friends. Under half (49%) use the sites to make new friends.

Students use technology in natural ways that allow them to do what they want: communicate with anyone they want, in the time and space that suits them best. Easily accessible and user-friendly, collaboration tools allow students to explore, share, engage, and connect with people and content in meaningful ways that help them learn. By relying on the familiar ways students use these tools, faculty can enable new forms of communication and engagement in the classroom, permitting extensions and variations of the informal interactions already occurring in classrooms and hallways, and creating new frontiers for collaboration across geographic boundaries.

With growth of online course enrollments outpacing enrollments in traditional courses by 500%, institutions of higher education are experiencing significant changes in terms of long-term strategic planning. I constantly meet really smart non-technical people -- doctors, lawyers, teachers -- who have no clue how computers work. They treat them as magic black boxes that randomly break and never make sense. Why? Because software is a fundamentally different kind of system. It does not behave like the other things around us that we are used to.

So, repeat after me: LinkedIn is not a destination site. We thought the Valley intelligentsia long ago proclaimed the end of destination sites. The desire to "get people to spend more time on LinkedIn" is linked to a failed business model around advertising.

James A. Rudd, II, one of the survey's authors and a chemistry professor at Cal State Los Angeles, said that most science education research and development is traditionally conducted by faculty from education schools. Though these individuals understand the pedagogy of instruction, he said they sometimes do not understand the content of the sciences well enough to make their work beneficial. He said it is imperative for science faculty to bridge the gap between the study of education and that of science.

The physics department has replaced the traditional large introductory lecture with smaller classes that emphasize hands-on, interactive, collaborative learning. Last fall, after years of experimentation and debate and resistance from students, who initially petitioned against it, the department made the change permanent. Already, attendance is up and the failure rate has dropped by more than 50 percent.
