How to Write Instructions (with pictures) - wikiHow - 0 views

    • Franz Ferguson

Who knew writing instructions for instructions would be so technical. This page is one that has made it pretty simple however it doesn't provide many examples.
    • Franz Ferguson

This is a new step, but I believe it makes a lot of sense to include it. I don't know why other authors havent thought about it.
  • A set of instructions should help a reader accomplish a task quickly, efficiently and successfully.

  • Observe someone performing a task.
  • Stop after each step and record every detail.
  • Address the reader using "you" or "your."
  • Begin a sentence with a verb. Limit each step to one main idea.
  • Keep sentences short and simple
  • Revise again.
  •
i think this will help me because its very clear on what details to pay attention when making instructions.
  •
Wikihow offers a lot of easy to understand information. This page shows me a step by step way of writing a turtorial and also how to include pictures.
  •
To write instructions we have to know our audience, Write each step, observe someone performing a task, stop after each step, revise and try to record every detail.  This page is simple giving out a list of how to record a set of instructions although it does not have a lot of examples.

This brief outline of whats to come is actually pretty helpful.
    • Franz Ferguson

Like the author said that I got this from, thisis a very interactive way to learn how to right instructions, and its not super dry and boring.
    • Franz Ferguson

By giving examples of the right and wrong way on how to make instructions, I personally found it easier to understand what I was trying to accomplish because of it.

Again another quality example of the right way to do things and the wrong way which is how I learn best. If I can compare something the wrong was to the right way then I find I create less errors.

Because this site is somewhat interactive, it allows you to explore different aspects of creating instructions. For the most part you want to keep your instructions clear and create a somewhat demanding tone.
  •
Another simplistic site, but great tips for wording. Also some interactive quizzes after the instructions.

This will help me in the first project because I can easily refer to their examples and decide if my instructions are correct or not. I like that there is user interaction with this website, it keeps me engaged, rather than just reading text.
  •
In the following list, click to put a tick beside the statement if you think it's important when writing instructions - leave it blank if you don't (you can click again in the box to change your mind). This is the form of the verb which tells you to do something.

Instructions: How to Write Guides for Busy, Grouchy People - Jerz's Literacy Weblog - 0 views

This was referred from Due Date # 2 but I highlighted a few great points and insights. Instructions are a hassle but knowing how to service and communicate to your audience the right way makes a big difference. It comes down to keeping it simple.
  •
Interesting title to catch your attention but basically talks about the same main points to follow for writing only for a manual or guide.

This How To guide was already bookmarked to TWC301 it looks like. I sure like the title though.
  •
I really liked the title on this one. It had similar information to the previous one but it does give good examples of what real life "grouchy" people may think when reading a long piece of information. Also I think the way the author wrote it, it did make me enjoy the reading a little more.
  •
This is probably one of the pages I found that had the most detail/info about writing instructions and after reading the grading criteria for the first assignment I found this page to be most helpful
  •
This web page takes you through steps of how to write effective instructions; after reading the grading criteria for asssignment 1 I found this to be one of the most helpful

This a website that gives a study guide ( question and answer) about emphasis techniques you must know
  •
This website supplements the book's topic of emphasis techniques by giving a straightforward tip list. I would recommend this list to anyone who wants a quick check list.
  •
This is a very helpful website that explains the importance of emphasizing in web pages. It says to use a lot of repetition, to stick it in the reader's mind. It also says give the major points more space to discuss. Use different font style to catch the reader's eye.

For my project I am still not sure what I want to do yet, however I do know that if a list of materials is needed I will list it first.
    • Franz Ferguson

These three tips are very important I can see that they will be important in the future, thinking through my instructions are going to vital because if I don't take control of what to list and in what order then the instructions will be difficult to understand.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Use active, clear language
  • Test the instructions
    • Franz Ferguson

I really approve of this step it makes a lot of sense to do.
  •
I really enjoyed how the layout was easy to read and follow. The author gives good tips on what to look out for and what to say in your instructions. The author also has lots of other links on her website to help a writer out.
  •
Aside from the creepy lady at the top lol there are some great instructional writing techniques. The tips I found to be of most use were testing out your instructions and having others try to make sense of them.

Emphasis in writing has certain methods to follow in order to correctly use the technique. One important thing to remember is to never over do it! This will take away from the focal point. This website is a good reference and guide for the proper use of emphasis.
