How game mechanics will solve global warming - 0 views

  •
The last 10 years have been called the era of Web 2.0, a term used to describe a new type of online experience, wherein a user could be both author and audience. That decade, said SCVNGR CEO Seth Priebatsch today in his opening keynote at the SXSW conference, was the decade of social.  That decade, however, has been won, said Priebatsch. Facebook has come away as the clear leader and now, a new decade is upon us - the decade of games. These are not children's games, however. These are games that could change the world.

The Threat of Reading: If video games came first - 0 views

  •
"I know you're not a reader but man, you'd love this." It was pointless saying so but I couldn't help myself. I'd fallen head long again, deep into a story I didn't have to overhear or construct for myself. I was spending hours in my own little world, happily away from the enforced gaming I resisted at school - supposedly classical games that would make us better people.

Qrank: Turning legacy content into a mobile game - 0 views

  •
Mobile quiz startup Qrank will announce next week that it has raised a seed round of funding, including an investment from early Twitter VP of Product Jason Goldman. Qrank is building out a platform that will let any organization with a backlog of content use it to create smart, fast-paced mobile trivia games. The games incorporate social networks, location, chat and other social features. It sounds awesome. Goldman is one of five investors in a convertible note of $350,000, ReadWriteWeb has learned and the company has confirmed. The company will use the funding to build a self-service platform, acquire more high-profile customers and complete an analytics dashboard. The existing consumer app gets high marks for responsiveness and user engagement.

Don't Blame Video Games for Real-World Violence (via @Chronicle) - 0 views

  •
There exists a pool of several hundred studies on media violence. These studies have always been inconsistent, despite some unfortunate claims by some scholars to the contrary. Recent reviews of this research, ranging from the 2001 Department of Health and Human Services report on youth violence through recent reviews of video-game research by the U.S. Supreme Court and the governments of Australia and Sweden, have all concluded that the research is inconsistent and weakened by methodological flaws.

Can RPGs help organizations make better decisions? - 0 views

"Australian-based collaboration design specialist Matt Cooperrider has begun to explore an idea that I think the GeekDad readership is more than well positioned to help with. As well as being one of those out-of-the-box thinkers and generally smart guys, Matt is also a role-player and geek at heart. He has begun a new project called Play to Decide which will research how role-playing games can be used to support organizations and communities in democratic decision-making and the collaboration that follows. Newsjacking the Super Bowl: a good collection of brand use of the Blackout - 0 views

  •
Thanks to super-fast reactions, at least three brands were able to "newsjack" the power outage that hit the Super Bowl early in the third quarter of today's game. With the Ravens up by a score of 28-6, and a 49ers third-down play just about to begin, the lights inside the stadium went out, causing a somewhat lengthy delay that's still ongoing as I type this. Several brands saw the power outage as a chance to market themselves in clever ways on Twitter, which is no doubt experiencing new, all-time usage levels for a sporting event.

Thoughts on tech adoption: "You can't win or lose in the first inning"-@Greg2dot0 - 0 views

  •
It really amazes me. We are still predicting failure/success, trying to figure out exactly what Enterprise 2.0 is. Why? Not because I know the answer, but because our expectations are off. It's like trying to predict the winner of the ball game at the end of the 1st inning.

Children challenge economists' notions of rational behavior (they are altruistic) - 0 views

A Harvard University study built around an innovative economic game indicates that, at least for our younger selves, the desire for equity often trumps the urge to maximize rewards.

Why Do Whistle-Blowers Become Whistle-Blowers? : NPR - 0 views

Management gurus have long preached the value of ethical leadership. In the presence of ethical leadership - but the absence of ethical co-workers - what happens to people's honesty?
